40:2 pit of destruction . . . rock. A miry pit is contrasted with the sure footing of a rock. Sheol, the grave, is often pictured as a pit (6:5 and notes; 30:3). Perhaps the psalmist was ill and threatened with death; or, since the psalm is probably royal, he may have felt the threat of death in battle.
