24:7 Agag. 1 Samuel 15:32, 33 recounts the death of an Amalekite king who bore this name. Here Balaam may refer to an earlier prominent king of the Amalekites bearing the same personal name. It is also possible that “Agag” was a title, just as the title “Pharaoh” was used by many Egyptian rulers.
