9:7 This is my beloved Son. The heavenly declaration is a high point of divine revelation concerning the identity of Jesus. Just as God had revealed Himself in the theophany on Sinai as “the Lord, a God merciful and gracious” (Ex. 34:6), so now He reveals Himself as the one who speaks through His beloved Son (John 1:17; 3:16; Heb. 1:2).
listen to him. This phrase represents a rebuke to Peter as well as a declaration concerning the authority of the Son as revealer and prophet of the new covenant. These words echo Deut. 18:15, and identify Jesus as the great prophet like Moses.
