sign from heaven. Jesus does not perform signs on demand, especially not for those “testing” Him (cf. 1:13; Matt. 4:1–11, where the same Greek verb is translated “tempting”). The Pharisees wanted a sign to confirm that Jesus was the political messiah they were expecting (v. 15 note).
