15:22, 23 The father’s actions indicate complete forgiveness and restoration of relationship. The “best robe” is a mark of distinction and the ring signifies authority (Gen. 41:42; Esth. 3:10; 8:2). Because slaves did not wear shoes, the shoes point to the status of a free man. The fattened calf was reserved for special occasions.
