5:7 Our fathers sinned . . . we bear their iniquities. A similar description of solidarity between generations is found in Ex. 20:5 and in the books of 1 and 2 Kings, with their records of guilt accumulated over the generations. Passages such as Ezek. 18 (notes; Jer. 31:29, 30) address those who questioned the justice of being judged for sins they did not commit. Ezekiel answers that those who share in their father’s judgment have shared in their father’s sins: each generation bears the guilt of its own sins, not of those of previous generations only.
