5:6, 7 the highways were abandoned. Israel’s failed leadership had resulted in chaos and foreign domination. It was not like the days in which God had been the warrior at the front of Israel (vv. 4–5). The roads were abandoned because they were not safe for travel on account of the foreign oppressors and robbers. No one provided protection.
