7:6 tore his clothes . . . put dust on their heads. These are conventional expressions of grief (Job 1:20; 2:12). The cause of grief is the apparent failure of the covenant promises, the symbol of which is the ark. See notes 3:3, 17; 4:16. Joshua’s prayer (vv. 7–9) will appeal to those promises. See note 10:6.
