23:1 rest. See note 1:13. The experience of “rest . . . from all their surrounding enemies,” here incompletely realized, will become part of Israel’s hope (Deut. 12:10; 2 Sam. 7:11; 1 Chr. 22:9; cf. Mic. 5:9; Luke 1:71).

enemies. Israel represents God’s kingship to the world (Ex. 19:5–6) and will ultimately bring blessing to the nations (Gen. 12:3). The nations’ hostility to Israel is an expression of their hostility to God (cf. Gen. 3:15; Ex. 23:22 notes).

old. Joshua died at the age of 110 (24:29 note).
