1:9 Not My People. Hebrew “Lo-ammi.” The name of the third child marks the high point of God’s judgment, as God cancels the ancient covenantal formula (Ex. 6:7; Lev. 26:12; Deut. 26:17–19) and declares that the covenant is not in effect (v. 10 notes).

I am not your God. Lit. “I am not ‘I am’ to you,’’ a reference to the divine name for God used in Ex. 3:14.
