3:16–19 Neither the blessing of the Exodus from Egypt nor the privilege of hearing God’s voice guaranteed to the generation that was in the wilderness that they would enter God’s rest, the rest that is the goal of our pilgrimage (4:8 note). Their rebellion (v. 16), sin (v. 17), and disobedience (v. 18; 4:6) was rooted in unbelief, in their failure to cling permanently to God’s promise (v. 19; 4:2, 3).
