31:53 The God of Abraham . . . Nahor . . . father. The pagan Laban apparently regarded the God of Abraham as one of the gods of his family. Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, had probably been a moon-worshiper in Ur (11:27 note; Josh. 24:14).

Fear of his father Isaac. Not equating the God of Abraham with the God of Nahor, Jacob swore by the “Fear of his father Isaac” (v. 42 note), another name for the God of Abraham.
