25:31 Sell me. Jacob took advantage of his brother’s weakness. His behavior contrasts sharply with Abraham’s treatment of Lot (13:8, 9) and will be corrected (33:1–17).

birthright. The firstborn had the right to be the principal heir of the family’s fortunes (27:33; Deut. 21:17; 1 Chr. 5:1, 2). In the covenant family, this fortune included the substance of the Abrahamic blessing of offspring and land (12:2, 3, 7).
