3:2 burnt offerings. Burnt offerings were the primary offerings (Lev. 1), but others are also in view (v. 5). The burnt offering was the continuing basis on which a sinful people could live in the presence of a holy God (Ex. 29:42), looking forward as it did to the sacrifice of Christ, as the final sacrifice that brings sinners into the presence of God (Heb. 10:19–20).
