18:1 all the tribe of Levi. Not only the priests, but the whole tribe of Levi, numbering twenty-three thousand, was to receive no inheritance (Num. 18:20; 26:62; Deut. 10:9). This tribe would have no farms for livelihood, but would depend on the tithes and offerings of the people (vv. 3–5). Moses specifically allotted them forty-two cities, six of which would be cities of refuge (Num. 35:2–8). In due time these cities were allocated by Joshua (Josh. 21).
