6:1 widows were being neglected. The Old Testament required care of the poor and needy (Ps. 9:18 note). This concern is seen in the social action set forth in 2:44, 45; 4:34–37. Here the age-old problem of discrimination had emerged: the widows of Greek-speaking Jews (see text note) were considered outsiders by native-born Jews and so were not getting their share of the food distribution, probably deriving in part from the generous giving of 4:34–37.
