22:24 flogging. The Roman scourge was a whip of leather thongs loaded with bits of metal or bone; it could maim for life or kill. Jesus was scourged with such a whip (John 19:1). Paul had been beaten (2 Cor. 11:24, 25) but had never endured this particular punishment.
