The Hebrew here is difficult, but compare the explanation given in 1 Chr. 13:10, “because he put out his hand to the ark.” It may be that the punishment relates not only to Uzzah’s touching the ark, but, more importantly, to the irregular way the ark was being carried (v. 3 note; 1 Chr. 15:13–15).
