21:7 to David and to Solomon his son. David wished to build the temple himself (2 Sam. 7:1–3), but the Lord instead promised David that He would build David a dynasty and that his son (Solomon) would build the temple (2 Sam. 7:8–16). That promise was fulfilled during Solomon’s reign, and God blessed the temple as the divinely ordained place for sacrifice and prayer (1 Kin. 9:1–3; cf. Deut. 12:5).
