1–3 The author identifies himself only as “The elder” and the addressee only as “the elect lady.” These terms are appropriate for a relationship of mutual love and respect in which the author has had pastoral responsibility for the addressee. John’s concern for her depends on the truth all Christians share and is an example of the love that binds all Christians together.
