1 The elder. There is no real difficulty with an apostle identifying himself as an elder, since the responsibilities of an apostle toward each individual congregation were the same as the responsibilities of an elder (1 Pet. 5:1–4).

the elect lady. Some consider this expression and the similar expression in v. 13 as a metaphor for a church, but such usage is otherwise unknown.
