4:6 Hebrews. This word first occurs in Gen. 14:13 as a description of Abram. Extrabiblical documents of the second millennium b.c. mention a diverse and widespread people called “Habiru.” This has caused considerable debate about whether the biblical Hebrews are the same as these people. The Habiru seem to have been a landless class of aliens or refugees, who survived either by hiring themselves out as soldiers or farmers, or by plundering.
