a man after his own heart. The phrase might also be rendered “a man of His own choosing,” placing the accent on the Lord’s sovereign election. Nevertheless, in the light of passages such as 2:35 and 16:7, the text is also saying that the Lord’s chosen one, David, was “after God’s heart” in the sense of being committed to His will and purposes.
