10:7 do what your hand finds to do. In the light of Saul’s general commission to deliver Israel from the Philistines (9:16) and of Samuel’s specific mention of a visible symbol of Philistine domination at the site of the third and final sign (v. 5), Samuel’s words could be taken to imply that Saul should respond to his anointing by attacking the Philistine outpost. In the event, this possibility is not realized. Samuel’s words can also be interpreted as an encouragement for Saul to submit to the prophetic influence mentioned in v. 6.
