17:13 to him a father . . . to me a son. This language indicates a special adoption of the chosen king, not a belief in the divinity of the king as in other ancient Near Eastern cultures (Ps. 2:7; 45:6; 89:27 and note). New Testament writers understand these words about Solomon as a foreshadowing of Christ, the final Davidic King (Mark 1:11; Luke 1:32, 33; Heb. 1:5). Christ was the Son of David, but He was also the Son of God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35) and is the Second Person of the Godhead (John 1:1–18; 17:1).
