Psalm 35-49

New International Version

⁴ May those who seek my life^(I)
    be disgraced^(J) and put to shame;^(K)
may those who plot my ruin
    be turned back^(L) in dismay.
⁵ May they be like chaff^(M) before the wind,
    with the angel of the Lord^(N) driving them away;
⁶ may their path be dark and slippery,
    with the angel of the Lord pursuing them.

⁷ Since they hid their net^(O) for me without cause^(P)
    and without cause dug a pit^(Q) for me,
⁸ may ruin overtake them by surprise—^(R)
    may the net they hid entangle them,
    may they fall into the pit,^(S) to their ruin.
⁹ Then my soul will rejoice^(T) in the Lord
    and delight in his salvation.^(U)
10 My whole being will exclaim,
    “Who is like you,^(V) Lord?
You rescue the poor from those too strong^(W) for them,
    the poor and needy^(X) from those who rob them.”

¹¹ Ruthless witnesses^(Y) come forward;
    they question me on things I know nothing about.
¹² They repay me evil for good^(Z)
    and leave me like one bereaved.
¹³ Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth^(AA)
    and humbled myself with fasting.^(AB)
When my prayers returned to me unanswered,
¹⁴     I went about mourning^(AC)
    as though for my friend or brother.
I bowed my head in grief
    as though weeping for my mother.
¹⁵ But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee;^(AD)
    assailants gathered against me without my knowledge.
    They slandered^(AE) me without ceasing.
¹⁶ Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked;^[b](AF)
    they gnashed their teeth^(AG) at me.

¹⁷ How long,^(AH) Lord, will you look on?
    Rescue me from their ravages,
    my precious life^(AI) from these lions.^(AJ)
18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly;^(AK)
    among the throngs^(AL) I will praise you.^(AM)
19 Do not let those gloat over me
    who are my enemies^(AN) without cause;
do not let those who hate me without reason^(AO)
    maliciously wink the eye.^(AP)
20 They do not speak peaceably,
    but devise false accusations^(AQ)
    against those who live quietly in the land.
²¹ They sneer^(AR) at me and say, “Aha! Aha!^(AS)
    With our own eyes we have seen it.”

²² Lord, you have seen^(AT) this; do not be silent.
    Do not be far^(AU) from me, Lord.
²³ Awake,^(AV) and rise^(AW) to my defense!
    Contend^(AX) for me, my God and Lord.
²⁴ Vindicate me in your righteousness, Lord my God;
    do not let them gloat^(AY) over me.
²⁵ Do not let them think, “Aha,^(AZ) just what we wanted!”
    or say, “We have swallowed him up.”^(BA)

²⁶ May all who gloat^(BB) over my distress^(BC)
    be put to shame^(BD) and confusion;
may all who exalt themselves over me^(BE)
    be clothed with shame and disgrace.
²⁷ May those who delight in my vindication^(BF)
    shout for joy^(BG) and gladness;
may they always say, “The Lord be exalted,
    who delights^(BH) in the well-being of his servant.”^(BI)

²⁸ My tongue will proclaim your righteousness,^(BJ)
    your praises all day long.^(BK)

² In their own eyes they flatter themselves
    too much to detect or hate their sin.^(BO)
3 The words of their mouths^(BP) are wicked and deceitful;^(BQ)
    they fail to act wisely^(BR) or do good.^(BS)
4 Even on their beds they plot evil;^(BT)
    they commit themselves to a sinful course^(BU)
    and do not reject what is wrong.^(BV)

⁵ Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens,
    your faithfulness^(BW) to the skies.^(BX)
6 Your righteousness^(BY) is like the highest mountains,^(BZ)
    your justice like the great deep.^(CA)
    You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.^(CB)
7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!^(CC)
    People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.^(CD)
8 They feast on the abundance of your house;^(CE)
    you give them drink from your river^(CF) of delights.^(CG)
9 For with you is the fountain of life;^(CH)
    in your light^(CI) we see light.

¹⁰ Continue your love^(CJ) to those who know you,^(CK)
    your righteousness to the upright in heart.^(CL)
11 May the foot of the proud not come against me,
    nor the hand of the wicked^(CM) drive me away.
¹² See how the evildoers lie fallen—
    thrown down, not able to rise!^(CN)

³ Trust in the Lord and do good;
    dwell in the land^(CS) and enjoy safe pasture.^(CT)
4 Take delight^(CU) in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.^(CV)

⁵ Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him^(CW) and he will do this:
⁶ He will make your righteous reward^(CX) shine like the dawn,^(CY)
    your vindication like the noonday sun.

⁷ Be still^(CZ) before the Lord
    and wait patiently^(DA) for him;
do not fret^(DB) when people succeed in their ways,^(DC)
    when they carry out their wicked schemes.^(DD)

⁸ Refrain from anger^(DE) and turn from wrath;
    do not fret^(DF)—it leads only to evil.
⁹ For those who are evil will be destroyed,^(DG)
    but those who hope^(DH) in the Lord will inherit the land.^(DI)

¹⁰ A little while, and the wicked will be no more;^(DJ)
    though you look for them, they will not be found.
¹¹ But the meek will inherit the land^(DK)
    and enjoy peace and prosperity.^(DL)

¹² The wicked plot^(DM) against the righteous
    and gnash their teeth^(DN) at them;
¹³ but the Lord laughs at the wicked,
    for he knows their day is coming.^(DO)

¹⁴ The wicked draw the sword^(DP)
    and bend the bow^(DQ)
to bring down the poor and needy,^(DR)
    to slay those whose ways are upright.
¹⁵ But their swords will pierce their own hearts,^(DS)
    and their bows will be broken.^(DT)

¹⁶ Better the little that the righteous have
    than the wealth^(DU) of many wicked;
¹⁷ for the power of the wicked will be broken,^(DV)
    but the Lord upholds^(DW) the righteous.

¹⁸ The blameless spend their days under the Lord’s care,^(DX)
    and their inheritance will endure forever.^(DY)
19 In times of disaster they will not wither;
    in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

²⁰ But the wicked will perish:^(DZ)
    Though the Lord’s enemies are like the flowers of the field,
    they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.^(EA)

²¹ The wicked borrow and do not repay,
    but the righteous give generously;^(EB)
22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land,
    but those he curses^(EC) will be destroyed.^(ED)

²³ The Lord makes firm the steps^(EE)
    of the one who delights^(EF) in him;
²⁴ though he may stumble, he will not fall,^(EG)
    for the Lord upholds^(EH) him with his hand.

²⁵ I was young and now I am old,
    yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken^(EI)
    or their children begging^(EJ) bread.
²⁶ They are always generous and lend freely;^(EK)
    their children will be a blessing.^[f](EL)

²⁷ Turn from evil and do good;^(EM)
    then you will dwell in the land forever.^(EN)
28 For the Lord loves the just
    and will not forsake his faithful ones.^(EO)

Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed^[g];
    the offspring of the wicked will perish.^(EP)
29 The righteous will inherit the land^(EQ)
    and dwell in it forever.^(ER)

³⁰ The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,^(ES)
    and their tongues speak what is just.
³¹ The law of their God is in their hearts;^(ET)
    their feet do not slip.^(EU)

³² The wicked lie in wait^(EV) for the righteous,^(EW)
    intent on putting them to death;
³³ but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
    or let them be condemned^(EX) when brought to trial.^(EY)

³⁴ Hope in the Lord^(EZ)
    and keep his way.^(FA)
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
    when the wicked are destroyed,^(FB) you will see^(FC) it.

³⁵ I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
    flourishing^(FD) like a luxuriant native tree,
³⁶ but he soon passed away and was no more;
    though I looked for him, he could not be found.^(FE)

³⁷ Consider the blameless,^(FF) observe the upright;^(FG)
    a future awaits those who seek peace.^[h](FH)
38 But all sinners^(FI) will be destroyed;^(FJ)
    there will be no future^[i] for the wicked.^(FK)

³⁹ The salvation^(FL) of the righteous comes from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in time of trouble.^(FM)
40 The Lord helps^(FN) them and delivers^(FO) them;
    he delivers them from the wicked and saves^(FP) them,
    because they take refuge^(FQ) in him.

⁵ My wounds^(FX) fester and are loathsome^(FY)
    because of my sinful folly.^(FZ)
6 I am bowed down^(GA) and brought very low;
    all day long I go about mourning.^(GB)
7 My back is filled with searing pain;^(GC)
    there is no health^(GD) in my body.
⁸ I am feeble and utterly crushed;^(GE)
    I groan^(GF) in anguish of heart.^(GG)

⁹ All my longings^(GH) lie open before you, Lord;
    my sighing^(GI) is not hidden from you.
¹⁰ My heart pounds,^(GJ) my strength fails^(GK) me;
    even the light has gone from my eyes.^(GL)
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;^(GM)
    my neighbors stay far away.
¹² Those who want to kill me set their traps,^(GN)
    those who would harm me talk of my ruin;^(GO)
    all day long they scheme and lie.^(GP)

¹³ I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,^(GQ)
    like the mute, who cannot speak;
¹⁴ I have become like one who does not hear,
    whose mouth can offer no reply.
¹⁵ Lord, I wait^(GR) for you;
    you will answer,^(GS) Lord my God.
¹⁶ For I said, “Do not let them gloat^(GT)
    or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.”^(GU)

¹⁷ For I am about to fall,^(GV)
    and my pain^(GW) is ever with me.
¹⁸ I confess my iniquity;^(GX)
    I am troubled by my sin.
¹⁹ Many have become my enemies^(GY) without cause^[k];
    those who hate me^(GZ) without reason^(HA) are numerous.
²⁰ Those who repay my good with evil^(HB)
    lodge accusations^(HC) against me,
    though I seek only to do what is good.

²¹ Lord, do not forsake me;^(HD)
    do not be far^(HE) from me, my God.
²² Come quickly^(HF) to help me,^(HG)
    my Lord and my Savior.^(HH)

⁴ “Show me, Lord, my life’s end
    and the number of my days;^(HQ)
    let me know how fleeting^(HR) my life is.^(HS)
5 You have made my days^(HT) a mere handbreadth;
    the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,^(HU)
    even those who seem secure.^[m]

⁶ “Surely everyone goes around^(HV) like a mere phantom;^(HW)
    in vain they rush about,^(HX) heaping up wealth^(HY)
    without knowing whose it will finally be.^(HZ)

⁷ “But now, Lord, what do I look for?
    My hope is in you.^(IA)
8 Save me^(IB) from all my transgressions;^(IC)
    do not make me the scorn^(ID) of fools.
⁹ I was silent;^(IE) I would not open my mouth,^(IF)
    for you are the one who has done this.^(IG)
10 Remove your scourge from me;
    I am overcome by the blow^(IH) of your hand.^(II)
11 When you rebuke^(IJ) and discipline^(IK) anyone for their sin,
    you consume^(IL) their wealth like a moth^(IM)—
    surely everyone is but a breath.^(IN)

¹² “Hear my prayer, Lord,
    listen to my cry for help;^(IO)
    do not be deaf^(IP) to my weeping.^(IQ)
I dwell with you as a foreigner,^(IR)
    a stranger,^(IS) as all my ancestors were.^(IT)
13 Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
    before I depart and am no more.”^(IU)

⁴ Blessed is the one^(JG)
    who trusts in the Lord,^(JH)
who does not look to the proud,^(JI)
    to those who turn aside to false gods.^[o](JJ)
5 Many, Lord my God,
    are the wonders^(JK) you have done,
    the things you planned for us.
None can compare^(JL) with you;
    were I to speak and tell of your deeds,
    they would be too many^(JM) to declare.

⁶ Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—^(JN)
    but my ears you have opened^[p]—^(JO)
    burnt offerings^(JP) and sin offerings^[q] you did not require.
⁷ Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—
    it is written about me in the scroll.^[r](JQ)
8 I desire to do your will,^(JR) my God;^(JS)
    your law is within my heart.”^(JT)

⁹ I proclaim your saving acts^(JU) in the great assembly;^(JV)
    I do not seal my lips, Lord,
    as you know.^(JW)
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;
    I speak of your faithfulness^(JX) and your saving help.
I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness
    from the great assembly.^(JY)

¹¹ Do not withhold your mercy^(JZ) from me, Lord;
    may your love^(KA) and faithfulness^(KB) always protect^(KC) me.
¹² For troubles^(KD) without number surround me;
    my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.^(KE)
They are more than the hairs of my head,^(KF)
    and my heart fails^(KG) within me.
¹³ Be pleased to save me, Lord;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.^(KH)

¹⁴ May all who want to take my life^(KI)
    be put to shame and confusion;^(KJ)
may all who desire my ruin^(KK)
    be turned back in disgrace.
¹⁵ May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”^(KL)
    be appalled at their own shame.
¹⁶ But may all who seek you^(KM)
    rejoice and be glad^(KN) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”^(KO)

¹⁷ But as for me, I am poor and needy;^(KP)
    may the Lord think^(KQ) of me.
You are my help^(KR) and my deliverer;^(KS)
    you are my God, do not delay.^(KT)

⁴ I said, “Have mercy^(LD) on me, Lord;
    heal^(LE) me, for I have sinned^(LF) against you.”
⁵ My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die and his name perish?^(LG)”
⁶ When one of them comes to see me,
    he speaks falsely,^(LH) while his heart gathers slander;^(LI)
    then he goes out and spreads^(LJ) it around.

⁷ All my enemies whisper together^(LK) against me;
    they imagine the worst for me, saying,
⁸ “A vile disease has afflicted him;
    he will never get up^(LL) from the place where he lies.”
⁹ Even my close friend,^(LM)
    someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
    has turned^[t] against me.^(LN)

¹⁰ But may you have mercy^(LO) on me, Lord;
    raise me up,^(LP) that I may repay^(LQ) them.
¹¹ I know that you are pleased with me,^(LR)
    for my enemy does not triumph over me.^(LS)
12 Because of my integrity^(LT) you uphold me^(LU)
    and set me in your presence forever.^(LV)

¹³ Praise^(LW) be to the Lord, the God of Israel,^(LX)
    from everlasting to everlasting.

⁸ By day the Lord directs his love,^(MX)
    at night^(MY) his song^(MZ) is with me—
    a prayer to the God of my life.^(NA)

⁹ I say to God my Rock,^(NB)
    “Why have you forgotten^(NC) me?
Why must I go about mourning,^(ND)
    oppressed^(NE) by the enemy?”^(NF)
10 My bones suffer mortal agony^(NG)
    as my foes taunt^(NH) me,
saying to me all day long,
    “Where is your God?”^(NI)

    my sword does not bring me victory;
⁷ but you give us victory^(OT) over our enemies,
    you put our adversaries to shame.^(OU)
8 In God we make our boast^(OV) all day long,^(OW)
    and we will praise your name forever.^[ac](OX)

⁹ But now you have rejected^(OY) and humbled us;^(OZ)
    you no longer go out with our armies.^(PA)
10 You made us retreat^(PB) before the enemy,
    and our adversaries have plundered^(PC) us.
¹¹ You gave us up to be devoured like sheep^(PD)
    and have scattered us among the nations.^(PE)
12 You sold your people for a pittance,^(PF)
    gaining nothing from their sale.

¹³ You have made us a reproach^(PG) to our neighbors,^(PH)
    the scorn^(PI) and derision^(PJ) of those around us.
¹⁴ You have made us a byword^(PK) among the nations;
    the peoples shake their heads^(PL) at us.
¹⁵ I live in disgrace^(PM) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame^(PN)
16 at the taunts^(PO) of those who reproach and revile^(PP) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.^(PQ)

¹⁷ All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten^(PR) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
¹⁸ Our hearts had not turned^(PS) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
¹⁹ But you crushed^(PT) us and made us a haunt for jackals;^(PU)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.^(PV)

²⁰ If we had forgotten^(PW) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,^(PX)
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?^(PY)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep^(PZ) to be slaughtered.^(QA)

²³ Awake,^(QB) Lord! Why do you sleep?^(QC)
    Rouse yourself!^(QD) Do not reject us forever.^(QE)
24 Why do you hide your face^(QF)
    and forget^(QG) our misery and oppression?^(QH)

²⁵ We are brought down to the dust;^(QI)
    our bodies cling to the ground.
²⁶ Rise up^(QJ) and help us;
    rescue^(QK) us because of your unfailing love.^(QL)

² You are the most excellent of men
    and your lips have been anointed with grace,^(QN)
    since God has blessed you forever.^(QO)

³ Gird your sword^(QP) on your side, you mighty one;^(QQ)
    clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.^(QR)
4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously^(QS)
    in the cause of truth, humility and justice;^(QT)
    let your right hand^(QU) achieve awesome deeds.^(QV)
5 Let your sharp arrows^(QW) pierce the hearts^(QX) of the king’s enemies;^(QY)
    let the nations fall beneath your feet.
⁶ Your throne, O God,^[af] will last for ever and ever;^(QZ)
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
⁷ You love righteousness^(RA) and hate wickedness;^(RB)
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing^(RC) you with the oil of joy.^(RD)
8 All your robes are fragrant^(RE) with myrrh^(RF) and aloes^(RG) and cassia;^(RH)
    from palaces adorned with ivory^(RI)
    the music of the strings^(RJ) makes you glad.
⁹ Daughters of kings^(RK) are among your honored women;
    at your right hand^(RL) is the royal bride^(RM) in gold of Ophir.^(RN)

¹⁰ Listen, daughter,^(RO) and pay careful attention:^(RP)
    Forget your people^(RQ) and your father’s house.
¹¹ Let the king be enthralled by your beauty;^(RR)
    honor^(RS) him, for he is your lord.^(RT)
12 The city of Tyre^(RU) will come with a gift,^[ag](RV)
    people of wealth will seek your favor.
¹³ All glorious^(RW) is the princess within her chamber;
    her gown is interwoven with gold.^(RX)
14 In embroidered garments^(RY) she is led to the king;^(RZ)
    her virgin companions^(SA) follow her—
    those brought to be with her.
¹⁵ Led in with joy and gladness,^(SB)
    they enter the palace of the king.

¹⁶ Your sons will take the place of your fathers;
    you will make them princes^(SC) throughout the land.

¹⁷ I will perpetuate your memory through all generations;^(SD)
    therefore the nations will praise you^(SE) for ever and ever.^(SF)

⁴ There is a river^(SS) whose streams^(ST) make glad the city of God,^(SU)
    the holy place where the Most High^(SV) dwells.^(SW)
5 God is within her,^(SX) she will not fall;^(SY)
    God will help^(SZ) her at break of day.
⁶ Nations^(TA) are in uproar,^(TB) kingdoms^(TC) fall;
    he lifts his voice,^(TD) the earth melts.^(TE)

⁷ The Lord Almighty^(TF) is with us;^(TG)
    the God of Jacob^(TH) is our fortress.^(TI)

⁸ Come and see what the Lord has done,^(TJ)
    the desolations^(TK) he has brought on the earth.
⁹ He makes wars^(TL) cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow^(TM) and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields^[ak] with fire.^(TN)
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;^(TO)
    I will be exalted^(TP) among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

¹¹ The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob^(TQ) is our fortress.^(TR)

² For the Lord Most High^(TU) is awesome,^(TV)
    the great King^(TW) over all the earth.
³ He subdued^(TX) nations under us,
    peoples under our feet.
⁴ He chose our inheritance^(TY) for us,
    the pride of Jacob,^(TZ) whom he loved.^[am]

⁵ God has ascended^(UA) amid shouts of joy,^(UB)
    the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.^(UC)
6 Sing praises^(UD) to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.
⁷ For God is the King of all the earth;^(UE)
    sing to him a psalm^(UF) of praise.

⁸ God reigns^(UG) over the nations;
    God is seated on his holy throne.^(UH)
9 The nobles of the nations assemble
    as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings^[an] of the earth belong to God;^(UI)
    he is greatly exalted.^(UJ)

² Beautiful^(UO) in its loftiness,
    the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon^[ap](UP) is Mount Zion,^(UQ)
    the city of the Great King.^(UR)
3 God is in her citadels;^(US)
    he has shown himself to be her fortress.^(UT)

⁴ When the kings joined forces,
    when they advanced together,^(UU)
5 they saw her and were astounded;
    they fled in terror.^(UV)
6 Trembling seized^(UW) them there,
    pain like that of a woman in labor.^(UX)
7 You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish^(UY)
    shattered by an east wind.^(UZ)

⁸ As we have heard,
    so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
    in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
    forever.^[aq](VA)

⁹ Within your temple, O God,
    we meditate^(VB) on your unfailing love.^(VC)
10 Like your name,^(VD) O God,
    your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;^(VE)
    your right hand is filled with righteousness.
¹¹ Mount Zion rejoices,
    the villages of Judah are glad
    because of your judgments.^(VF)

¹² Walk about Zion, go around her,
    count her towers,^(VG)
13 consider well her ramparts,^(VH)
    view her citadels,^(VI)
that you may tell of them
    to the next generation.^(VJ)

¹⁴ For this God is our God for ever and ever;
    he will be our guide^(VK) even to the end.

⁵ Why should I fear^(VU) when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
⁶ those who trust in their wealth^(VV)
    and boast^(VW) of their great riches?^(VX)
7 No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—
⁸ the ransom^(VY) for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—^(VZ)
9 so that they should live on^(WA) forever
    and not see decay.^(WB)
10 For all can see that the wise die,^(WC)
    that the foolish and the senseless^(WD) also perish,
    leaving their wealth^(WE) to others.^(WF)
11 Their tombs^(WG) will remain their houses^[as] forever,
