Allotment for Joshua

⁴⁹ When they had finished dividing the land into its allotted portions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, ⁵⁰ as the Lord had commanded. They gave him the town he asked for—Timnath Serah^[a](A) in the hill country of Ephraim. And he built up the town and settled there.

⁵¹ These are the territories that Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel assigned by lot at Shiloh in the presence of the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. And so they finished dividing^(B) the land.^(C)

Cities of Refuge^(D)

20 Then the Lord said to Joshua: ² “Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses, ³ so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally^(E) may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.^{(F) 4} When they flee to one of these cities, they are to stand in the entrance of the city gate^(G) and state their case before the elders^(H) of that city. Then the elders are to admit the fugitive into their city and provide a place to live among them. ⁵ If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought. ⁶ They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly^(I) and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.”

⁷ So they set apart Kedesh^(J) in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem^(K) in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba^(L) (that is, Hebron^(M)) in the hill country of Judah.^{(N) 8} East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer^(O) in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead^(P) in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan^(Q) in the tribe of Manasseh. ⁹ Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally^(R) could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.^(S)

Towns for the Levites^(T)

21 Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel^{(U) 2} at Shiloh^(V) in Canaan and said to them, “The Lord commanded through Moses that you give us towns^(W) to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.”^{(X) 3} So, as the Lord had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

⁴ The first lot came out for the Kohathites,^(Y) according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin.^{(Z) 5} The rest of Kohath’s descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh.^(AA)

⁶ The descendants of Gershon^(AB) were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar,^(AC) Asher,^(AD) Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

⁷ The descendants of Merari,^(AE) according to their clans, received twelve^(AF) towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.^(AG)

⁸ So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

⁹ From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name ¹⁰ (these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them):

¹⁹ The total number of towns^(AW) for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.^(AX)

²⁰ The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim:

²⁶ All these ten towns and their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.^(BG)

²⁷ The Levite clans of the Gershonites were given:

²⁸ from the tribe of Issachar,^(BJ)

³⁰ from the tribe of Asher,^(BO)

³² from the tribe of Naphtali,

³³ The total number of towns of the Gershonite^(BU) clans came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.

³⁴ The Merarite clans (the rest of the Levites) were given:

³⁶ from the tribe of Reuben,

³⁸ from the tribe of Gad,

⁴⁰ The total number of towns allotted to the Merarite clans, who were the rest of the Levites, came to twelve.^(CF)

⁴¹ The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands.^{(CG) 42} Each of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.

⁴³ So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors,^(CH) and they took possession^(CI) of it and settled there.^{(CJ) 44} The Lord gave them rest^(CK) on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies^(CL) withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies^(CM) into their hands.^{(CN) 45} Not one of all the Lord’s good promises^(CO) to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.

⁵⁴ These were the locations of their settlements^(A) allotted as their territory (they were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clan, because the first lot was for them):

⁶¹ The rest of Kohath’s descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of half the tribe of Manasseh.

⁶² The descendants of Gershon, clan by clan, were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher and Naphtali, and from the part of the tribe of Manasseh that is in Bashan.

⁶³ The descendants of Merari, clan by clan, were allotted twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun.

⁶⁴ So the Israelites gave the Levites these towns^(H) and their pasturelands. ⁶⁵ From the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin they allotted the previously named towns.
