  1. But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
  2. So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.”
  3. But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
  4. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
  5. For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?
  6. Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
  7. Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk?
  8. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.”
  9. Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
  10. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,
  11. If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
  12. But if someone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience.
  13. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
  14. So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat,
  15. for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk.
  16. Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter!
  17. For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
  18. So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
  19. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.
  20. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.
  21. So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together.
  22. Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
  23. If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
