  6. The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger.
  7. For this is what the Lord says about the sons and daughters born in this land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are their fathers:
  8. No one will offer food to comfort those who mourn for the dead—not even for a father or a mother—nor will anyone give them a drink to console them.
  9. Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, who made him very glad, saying, “A child is born to you—a son!”
  10. This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place.
  11. For this is what the Lord says about Shallum son of Josiah, who succeeded his father as king of Judah but has gone from this place: “He will never return.
  12. “Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him.
  13. They will come with weeping; they will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams of water on a level path where they will not stumble, because I am Israel’s father, and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
  14. ‘Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive. Your widows too can depend on me.’”
