  1. When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

  7. Opposition to the Rebuilding

    When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,
  8. Hear us, our God, for we are despised. Turn their insults back on their own heads. Give them over as plunder in a land of captivity.
  9. So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.
  10. But when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites and the people of Ashdod heard that the repairs to Jerusalem’s walls had gone ahead and that the gaps were being closed, they were very angry.
  11. When our enemies heard that we were aware of their plot and that God had frustrated it, we all returned to the wall, each to our own work.
  12. Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”
  13. When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry.
  14. Opposition to the Completed Wall

    When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.
  15. So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:
  16. You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.
  17. “You saw the suffering of our ancestors in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea.
  18. So you delivered them into the hands of their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.
  19. “But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.
  20. And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.
  21. Nehemiah’s Final Reforms

    On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God,
  22. When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent.
  23. Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?”
