Psalm 84-90

³ Even the sparrow finds a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
    ^(H)my King and my God.
^4 (I)Blessed are those who dwell in your house,
    ever ^(J)singing your praise! Selah

⁵ Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
    ^(K)in whose heart are the highways to Zion.^[b]
6 As they go through the Valley of Baca
    they make it a place of springs;
    ^(L)the early rain also covers it with ^(M)pools.
⁷ They go ^(N)from strength to strength;
    each one ^(O)appears before God in Zion.

⁸ O ^(P)Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer;
    give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah
^9 (Q)Behold our ^(R)shield, O God;
    look on the face of your anointed!

¹⁰ For a day ^(S)in your courts is better
    than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be ^(T)a doorkeeper in the house of my God
    than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
¹¹ For the Lord God is ^(U)a sun and ^(V)shield;
    the Lord bestows favor and honor.
^(W)No good thing does he withhold
    from those who ^(X)walk uprightly.
¹² O Lord of hosts,
    ^(Y)blessed is the one who trusts in you!

^4 (AF)Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward us!
^5 (AG)Will you be angry with us forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
⁶ Will you not ^(AH)revive us again,
    that your people may ^(AI)rejoice in you?
⁷ Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.

^8 (AJ)Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will ^(AK)speak peace to his people, to his ^(AL)saints;
    but let them not ^(AM)turn back to ^(AN)folly.
⁹ Surely his ^(AO)salvation is near to those who fear him,
    that ^(AP)glory may dwell in our land.

^10 (AQ)Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
    ^(AR)righteousness and peace kiss each other.
¹¹ Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
    and righteousness looks down from the sky.
¹² Yes, ^(AS)the Lord will give what is good,
    and our land ^(AT)will yield its increase.
^13 (AU)Righteousness will go before him
    and make his footsteps a way.

⁸ There is ^(BH)none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    ^(BI)nor are there any works like yours.
^9 (BJ)All the nations you have made shall come
    and worship before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.
¹⁰ For ^(BK)you are great and ^(BL)do wondrous things;
    ^(BM)you alone are God.
^11 (BN)Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may ^(BO)walk in your truth;
    ^(BP)unite my heart to fear your name.
¹² I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
    and I will glorify your name forever.
^13 (BQ)For great is your steadfast love toward me;
    you have ^(BR)delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

¹⁴ O God, insolent men have ^(BS)risen up against me;
    a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
    and they do not set you before them.
¹⁵ But you, O Lord, are a God ^(BT)merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
^16 (BU)Turn to me and be gracious to me;
    give your strength to ^(BV)your servant,
    and save ^(BW)the son of your maidservant.
^17 (BX)Show me a sign of your ^(BY)favor,
    that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
    because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

⁴ Among those who ^(CF)know me I mention ^(CG)Rahab and Babylon;
    behold, Philistia and Tyre, with ^(CH)Cush^[c]—
    “This one was born there,” they say.
⁵ And of Zion it shall be said,
    “This one and that one were born in her”;
    for the Most High himself will ^(CI)establish her.
⁶ The Lord records as he ^(CJ)registers the peoples,
    “This one was born there.” Selah

^7 (CK)Singers and ^(CL)dancers alike say,
    “All my ^(CM)springs are in you.”

³ For my soul is full of troubles,
    and ^(CT)my life draws near to ^(CU)Sheol.
⁴ I am counted among those who ^(CV)go down to the pit;
    I am a man who has no strength,
⁵ like one set loose among the dead,
    like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom ^(CW)you remember no more,
    for they are ^(CX)cut off from your hand.
⁶ You have put me in ^(CY)the depths of the pit,
    in the ^(CZ)regions dark and ^(DA)deep.
⁷ Your wrath ^(DB)lies heavy upon me,
    and you overwhelm me with ^(DC)all your waves. Selah

⁸ You have caused ^(DD)my companions to shun me;
    you have made me ^(DE)a horror^[e] to them.
I am ^(DF)shut in so that I cannot escape;
^{9     (DG)}my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon you, O Lord;
    I ^(DH)spread out my hands to you.
¹⁰ Do you work wonders for the dead?
    ^(DI)Do the departed rise up to praise you? Selah
¹¹ Is your steadfast love declared in the grave,
    or your faithfulness in Abaddon?
¹² Are your ^(DJ)wonders known in ^(DK)the darkness,
    or your righteousness in the land of ^(DL)forgetfulness?

¹³ But I, O Lord, cry ^(DM)to you;
    ^(DN)in the morning my prayer comes before you.
¹⁴ O Lord, why ^(DO)do you cast my soul away?
    Why ^(DP)do you hide your face from me?
¹⁵ Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
    I suffer your terrors; I am helpless.^[f]
16 Your wrath has swept over me;
    your ^(DQ)dreadful assaults destroy me.
¹⁷ They ^(DR)surround me like a flood ^(DS)all day long;
    they ^(DT)close in on me together.
¹⁸ You have caused ^(DU)my beloved and my friend to shun me;
    my companions have become darkness.^[g]

⁵ Let ^(EH)the heavens praise your ^(EI)wonders, O Lord,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of ^(EJ)the holy ones!
⁶ For ^(EK)who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    ^(EL)Who among the heavenly beings^[i] is like the Lord,
⁷ a God greatly ^(EM)to be feared in the council of ^(EN)the holy ones,
    and awesome above all ^(EO)who are around him?
⁸ O Lord God of hosts,
    ^(EP)who is mighty as you are, O ^(EQ)Lord,
    with your faithfulness all around you?
⁹ You rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, you ^(ER)still them.
¹⁰ You ^(ES)crushed ^(ET)Rahab like a carcass;
    you ^(EU)scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
^11 (EV)The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
    ^(EW)the world and all that is in it, you have ^(EX)founded them.
^12 (EY)The north and the south, you have created them;
    ^(EZ)Tabor and ^(FA)Hermon ^(FB)joyously praise your name.
¹³ You have a mighty arm;
    strong is your hand, high your right hand.
^14 (FC)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    ^(FD)steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
¹⁵ Blessed are the people who know ^(FE)the festal shout,
    who walk, O Lord, in ^(FF)the light of your face,
¹⁶ who exult in your ^(FG)name all the day
    and in your righteousness are ^(FH)exalted.
¹⁷ For you are ^(FI)the glory of their strength;
    by your favor our ^(FJ)horn is exalted.
¹⁸ For our ^(FK)shield belongs to the Lord,
    our king to ^(FL)the Holy One of Israel.

^19 (FM)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,^[j] and said:
    “I have ^(FN)granted help to one who is ^(FO)mighty;
    I have exalted one ^(FP)chosen from the people.
^20 (FQ)I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have ^(FR)anointed him,
²¹ so that my ^(FS)hand shall be established with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
²² The enemy shall not outwit him;
    ^(FT)the wicked shall not humble him.
²³ I will ^(FU)crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
²⁴ My ^(FV)faithfulness and my ^(FW)steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name shall his ^(FX)horn be exalted.
²⁵ I will set his hand on ^(FY)the sea
    and his right hand on ^(FZ)the rivers.
²⁶ He shall cry to me, ‘You are my ^(GA)Father,
    my God, and ^(GB)the Rock of my salvation.’
²⁷ And I will make him the ^(GC)firstborn,
    ^(GD)the highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸ My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
    and my ^(GE)covenant will stand firm^[k] for him.
²⁹ I will establish his ^(GF)offspring forever
    and his ^(GG)throne as ^(GH)the days of the heavens.
^30 (GI)If his children forsake my law
    and do not walk according to my rules,^[l]
31 if they violate my statutes
    and do not keep my commandments,
³² then I will punish their transgression with ^(GJ)the rod
    and their iniquity with stripes,
³³ but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
    or be false to my faithfulness.
³⁴ I will not violate my ^(GK)covenant
    or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
³⁵ Once for all I have sworn ^(GL)by my holiness;
    I will not ^(GM)lie to David.
³⁶ His ^(GN)offspring shall endure forever,
    ^(GO)his ^(GP)throne as long as ^(GQ)the sun before me.
³⁷ Like ^(GR)the moon it shall be established forever,
    ^(GS)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

³⁸ But now you have ^(GT)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your ^(GU)anointed.
³⁹ You have ^(GV)renounced ^(GW)the covenant with your servant;
    you have ^(GX)defiled his ^(GY)crown in the dust.
⁴⁰ You have ^(GZ)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
^41 (HA)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become ^(HB)the scorn of his neighbors.
⁴² You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
⁴³ You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
⁴⁴ You have made his splendor to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵ You have cut short ^(HC)the days of his youth;
    you have ^(HD)covered him with shame. Selah

^46 (HE)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath ^(HF)burn like fire?
^47 (HG)Remember ^(HH)how short my ^(HI)time is!
    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
^48 (HJ)What man can live and never ^(HK)see death?
    Who can deliver his soul from the power of ^(HL)Sheol? Selah

⁴⁹ Lord, where is your ^(HM)steadfast love of old,
    which by your ^(HN)faithfulness you swore to David?
^50 (HO)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my ^(HP)heart the insults^[m] of all the many nations,
⁵¹ with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock ^(HQ)the footsteps of your ^(HR)anointed.

^52 (HS)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

³ You return man to dust
    and say, ^(HZ)“Return, ^(IA)O children of man!”^[o]
4 For ^(IB)a thousand years in your sight
    are but as ^(IC)yesterday when it is past,
    or as ^(ID)a watch in the night.

⁵ You ^(IE)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like ^(IF)a dream,
    like ^(IG)grass that is renewed in the morning:
⁶ in ^(IH)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
    in the evening it ^(II)fades and ^(IJ)withers.

⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger;
    by your wrath we are dismayed.
⁸ You have ^(IK)set our iniquities before you,
    our ^(IL)secret sins in the light of your presence.

⁹ For all our days pass away under your wrath;
    we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
¹⁰ The years of our life are seventy,
    or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span^[p] is but toil and trouble;
    they are soon gone, and we fly away.
¹¹ Who considers the power of your anger,
    and your wrath according to the fear of you?

^12 (IM)So teach us to number our days
    that we may get a heart of wisdom.
^13 (IN)Return, O Lord! ^(IO)How long?
    Have ^(IP)pity on your servants!
¹⁴ Satisfy us in the ^(IQ)morning with your steadfast love,
    that we may ^(IR)rejoice and be glad all our days.
¹⁵ Make us glad for as many days as you have ^(IS)afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.
¹⁶ Let your ^(IT)work be shown to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.
¹⁷ Let the ^(IU)favor^[q] of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and establish ^(IV)the work of our hands upon us;
    yes, establish the work of our hands!
