Psalm 94

Psalm 94

¹The Lord is a God who avenges.^(A)
    O God who avenges, shine forth.^(B)
²Rise up,^(C) Judge^(D) of the earth;
    pay back^(E) to the proud what they deserve.
³How long, Lord, will the wicked,
    how long will the wicked be jubilant?^(F)

⁴They pour out arrogant^(G) words;
    all the evildoers are full of boasting.^(H)
⁵They crush your people,^(I) Lord;
    they oppress your inheritance.^(J)
⁶They slay the widow^(K) and the foreigner;
    they murder the fatherless.^(L)
⁷They say, “The Lord does not see;^(M)
    the God of Jacob^(N) takes no notice.”

⁸Take notice, you senseless ones^(O) among the people;
    you fools, when will you become wise?
⁹Does he who fashioned the ear not hear?
    Does he who formed the eye not see?^(P)
¹⁰Does he who disciplines^(Q) nations not punish?
    Does he who teaches^(R) mankind lack knowledge?
¹¹The Lord knows all human plans;^(S)
    he knows that they are futile.^(T)

¹²Blessed is the one you discipline,^(U) Lord,
    the one you teach^(V) from your law;
¹³you grant them relief from days of trouble,^(W)
    till a pit^(X) is dug for the wicked.
¹⁴For the Lord will not reject his people;^(Y)
    he will never forsake his inheritance.
¹⁵Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,^(Z)
    and all the upright in heart^(AA) will follow it.

¹⁶Who will rise up^(AB) for me against the wicked?
    Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?^(AC)
¹⁷Unless the Lord had given me help,^(AD)
    I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.^(AE)
¹⁸When I said, “My foot is slipping,^(AF)”
    your unfailing love, Lord, supported me.
¹⁹When anxiety^(AG) was great within me,
    your consolation^(AH) brought me joy.

²⁰Can a corrupt throne^(AI) be allied with you—
    a throne that brings on misery by its decrees?^(AJ)
²¹The wicked band together^(AK) against the righteous
    and condemn the innocent^(AL) to death.^(AM)
²²But the Lord has become my fortress,
    and my God the rock^(AN) in whom I take refuge.^(AO)
²³He will repay^(AP) them for their sins
    and destroy^(AQ) them for their wickedness;
    the Lord our God will destroy them.

Joshua 10:28-43

Southern Cities Conquered

²⁸That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors.^(A) And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.^(B)

²⁹Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah^(C) and attacked it. ³⁰The Lord also gave that city and its king into Israel’s hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

³¹Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish;^(D) he took up positions against it and attacked it. ³²The Lord gave Lachish into Israel’s hands, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. ³³Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer^(E) had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army—until no survivors were left.

³⁴Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon;^(F) they took up positions against it and attacked it. ³⁵They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish.

³⁶Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron^(G) and attacked it. ³⁷They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone^(H) in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it.

³⁸Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir.^(I) ³⁹They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron.^(J)

⁴⁰So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev,^(K) the western foothills and the mountain slopes,^(L) together with all their kings.^(M) He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded.^(N) ⁴¹Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea^(O) to Gaza^(P) and from the whole region of Goshen^(Q) to Gibeon. ⁴²All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the Lord, the God of Israel, fought^(R) for Israel.

⁴³Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.^(S)

The Supremacy of the Son of God

¹⁵The Son is the image^(A) of the invisible God,^(B) the firstborn^(C) over all creation. ¹⁶For in him all things were created:^(D) things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;^(E) all things have been created through him and for him.^(F) ¹⁷He is before all things,^(G) and in him all things hold together. ¹⁸And he is the head^(H) of the body, the church;^(I) he is the beginning and the firstborn^(J) from among the dead,^(K) so that in everything he might have the supremacy. ¹⁹For God was pleased^(L) to have all his fullness^(M) dwell in him, ²⁰and through him to reconcile^(N) to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven,^(O) by making peace^(P) through his blood,^(Q) shed on the cross.

²¹Once you were alienated from God and were enemies^(R) in your minds^(S) because of^[a] your evil behavior. ²²But now he has reconciled^(T) you by Christ’s physical body^(U) through death to present you^(V) holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation^(W)— ²³if you continue^(X) in your faith, established^(Y) and firm, and do not move from the hope^(Z) held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,^(AA) and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.^(AB)

¹²One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.^(B) ¹³When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:^(C) ¹⁴Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, ¹⁵Matthew,^(D) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, ¹⁶Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes^(E)

¹⁷He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,^(F) ¹⁸who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, ¹⁹and the people all tried to touch him,^(G) because power was coming from him and healing them all.^(H)

²⁰Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.^(I)
²¹Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.^(J)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.^(K)
²²Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you^(L) and insult you^(M)
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.^(N)

²³“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,^(O) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.^(P)

²⁴“But woe to you who are rich,^(Q)
    for you have already received your comfort.^(R)
²⁵Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.^(S)
Woe to you who laugh now,
    for you will mourn and weep.^(T)
²⁶Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
    for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.^(U)
