Psalm 67[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm. A song.

May God be gracious to us and bless us
    and make his face shine on us—[b](A)
so that your ways may be known on earth,
    your salvation(B) among all nations.(C)

May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.(D)
May the nations be glad and sing for joy,(E)
    for you rule the peoples with equity(F)
    and guide the nations of the earth.(G)
May the peoples praise you, God;
    may all the peoples praise you.

The land yields its harvest;(H)
    God, our God, blesses us.(I)
May God bless us still,
    so that all the ends of the earth(J) will fear him.(K)

  1. Psalm 67:1 In Hebrew texts 67:1-7 is numbered 67:2-8.
  2. Psalm 67:1 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verse 4.

11 “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish(A) from the earth and from under the heavens.’”[a]

12 But God made(B) the earth(C) by his power;
    he founded the world by his wisdom(D)
    and stretched out the heavens(E) by his understanding.
13 When he thunders,(F) the waters in the heavens roar;
    he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth.
He sends lightning(G) with the rain(H)
    and brings out the wind from his storehouses.(I)

14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge;
    every goldsmith is shamed(J) by his idols.
The images he makes are a fraud;(K)
    they have no breath in them.
15 They are worthless,(L) the objects of mockery;
    when their judgment comes, they will perish.
16 He who is the Portion(M) of Jacob is not like these,
    for he is the Maker of all things,(N)
including Israel, the people of his inheritance(O)
    the Lord Almighty is his name.(P)

Coming Destruction

17 Gather up your belongings(Q) to leave the land,
    you who live under siege.
18 For this is what the Lord says:
    “At this time I will hurl(R) out
    those who live in this land;
I will bring distress(S) on them
    so that they may be captured.”

19 Woe to me because of my injury!
    My wound(T) is incurable!
Yet I said to myself,
    “This is my sickness, and I must endure(U) it.”
20 My tent(V) is destroyed;
    all its ropes are snapped.
My children are gone from me and are no more;(W)
    no one is left now to pitch my tent
    or to set up my shelter.
21 The shepherds(X) are senseless(Y)
    and do not inquire of the Lord;(Z)
so they do not prosper(AA)
    and all their flock is scattered.(AB)
22 Listen! The report is coming—
    a great commotion from the land of the north!(AC)
It will make the towns of Judah desolate,(AD)
    a haunt of jackals.(AE)

Jeremiah’s Prayer

23 Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own;
    it is not for them to direct their steps.(AF)
24 Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure—
    not in your anger,(AG)
    or you will reduce me to nothing.(AH)
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations(AI)
    that do not acknowledge you,
    on the peoples who do not call on your name.(AJ)
For they have devoured(AK) Jacob;
    they have devoured him completely
    and destroyed his homeland.(AL)

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(A) and death through sin,(B) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(C)

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.(D) 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,(E) who is a pattern of the one to come.(F)

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,(G) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,(H) overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death(I) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life(J) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(K) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(L) and life(M) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(N) the many were made sinners,(O) so also through the obedience(P) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(Q) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(R) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(S) so also grace(T) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(U) through Jesus Christ our Lord.

52 Then the Jews(A) began to argue sharply among themselves,(B) “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh(C) of the Son of Man(D) and drink his blood,(E) you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.(F) 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.(G) 57 Just as the living Father sent me(H) and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”(I) 59 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
