Psalm 66

Psalm 66

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

¹Shout for joy to God, all the earth!^(A)
²    Sing the glory of his name;^(B)
    make his praise glorious.^(C)
³Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!^(D)
    So great is your power
    that your enemies cringe^(E) before you.
⁴All the earth bows down^(F) to you;
    they sing praise^(G) to you,
    they sing the praises of your name.”^[a]

⁵Come and see what God has done,
    his awesome deeds^(H) for mankind!
⁶He turned the sea into dry land,^(I)
    they passed through^(J) the waters on foot—
    come, let us rejoice^(K) in him.
⁷He rules forever^(L) by his power,
    his eyes watch^(M) the nations—
    let not the rebellious^(N) rise up against him.

⁸Praise^(O) our God, all peoples,
    let the sound of his praise be heard;
⁹he has preserved our lives^(P)
    and kept our feet from slipping.^(Q)
¹⁰For you, God, tested^(R) us;
    you refined us like silver.^(S)
¹¹You brought us into prison^(T)
    and laid burdens^(U) on our backs.
¹²You let people ride over our heads;^(V)
    we went through fire and water,
    but you brought us to a place of abundance.^(W)

¹³I will come to your temple with burnt offerings^(X)
    and fulfill my vows^(Y) to you—
¹⁴vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke
    when I was in trouble.
¹⁵I will sacrifice fat animals to you
    and an offering of rams;
    I will offer bulls and goats.^(Z)

¹⁶Come and hear,^(AA) all you who fear God;
    let me tell^(AB) you what he has done for me.
¹⁷I cried out to him with my mouth;
    his praise was on my tongue.
¹⁸If I had cherished sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened;^(AC)
¹⁹but God has surely listened
    and has heard^(AD) my prayer.
²⁰Praise be to God,
    who has not rejected^(AE) my prayer
    or withheld his love from me!

Jeremiah 8:18-9:6

¹⁸You who are my Comforter^[a] in sorrow,
    my heart is faint^(A) within me.
¹⁹Listen to the cry of my people
    from a land far away:^(B)
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
    Is her King^(C) no longer there?”

“Why have they aroused^(D) my anger with their images,
with their worthless^(E) foreign idols?”^(F)

²⁰“The harvest is past,
the summer has ended,
and we are not saved.”

²¹Since my people are crushed,^(G) I am crushed;
    I mourn,^(H) and horror grips me.
²²Is there no balm in Gilead?^(I)
    Is there no physician^(J) there?
Why then is there no healing^(K)
    for the wound of my people?

9 ^[b]¹Oh, that my head were a spring of water
    and my eyes a fountain of tears!^(L)
I would weep^(M) day and night
    for the slain of my people.^(N)
²Oh, that I had in the desert^(O)
    a lodging place for travelers,
so that I might leave my people
    and go away from them;
for they are all adulterers,^(P)
    a crowd of unfaithful^(Q) people.

³“They make ready their tongue
    like a bow, to shoot lies;^(R)
it is not by truth
    that they triumph^[c] in the land.
They go from one sin to another;
    they do not acknowledge^(S) me,”
declares the Lord.
⁴“Beware of your friends;^(T)
    do not trust anyone in your clan.^(U)
For every one of them is a deceiver,^[d]^(V)
    and every friend a slanderer.^(W)
⁵Friend deceives friend,^(X)
    and no one speaks the truth.^(Y)
They have taught their tongues to lie;^(Z)
    they weary themselves with sinning.
⁶You^[e] live in the midst of deception;^(AA)
    in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,”
declares the Lord.

Romans 5:1-11

Peace and Hope

5 Therefore, since we have been justified^(A) through faith,^(B) we^[a] have peace^(C) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,^(D) ²through whom we have gained access^(E) by faith into this grace in which we now stand.^(F) And we^[b] boast in the hope^(G) of the glory of God. ³Not only so, but we^[c] also glory in our sufferings,^(H) because we know that suffering produces perseverance;^(I) ⁴perseverance, character; and character, hope. ⁵And hope^(J) does not put us to shame, because God’s love^(K) has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit,^(L) who has been given to us.

⁶You see, at just the right time,^(M) when we were still powerless,^(N) Christ died for the ungodly.^(O) ⁷Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. ⁸But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.^(P)

⁹Since we have now been justified^(Q) by his blood,^(R) how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath^(S) through him! ¹⁰For if, while we were God’s enemies,^(T) we were reconciled^(U) to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!^(V) ¹¹Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.^(W)

⁴¹At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” ⁴²They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,^(A) whose father and mother we know?^(B) How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”^(C)

⁴³“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. ⁴⁴“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,^(D) and I will raise them up at the last day. ⁴⁵It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’^[a]^(E) Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. ⁴⁶No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God;^(F) only he has seen the Father. ⁴⁷Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.^(G) ⁴⁸I am the bread of life.^(H) ⁴⁹Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died.^(I) ⁵⁰But here is the bread that comes down from heaven,^(J) which anyone may eat and not die. ⁵¹I am the living bread^(K) that came down from heaven.^(L) Whoever eats this bread will live forever.
