The Test of Knowing Him

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a (A)liar, and the truth is not in him. But (B)whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God [a]is perfected (C)in him. By this we know that we are in Him. (D)He who says he abides in Him (E)ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

[b]Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had (F)from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard [c]from the beginning. Again, (G)a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, (H)because the darkness is passing away, and (I)the true light is already shining.

(J)He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 (K)He who loves his brother abides in the light, and (L)there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who (M)hates his brother is in darkness and (N)walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Their Spiritual State

12 I write to you, little children,
Because (O)your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.
13 I write to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is (P)from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
Because you have overcome the wicked one.
I write to you, little children,
Because you have (Q)known the Father.
14 I have written to you, fathers,
Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.
I have written to you, young men,
Because (R)you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,
And you have overcome the wicked one.

Do Not Love the World

15 (S)Do not love the world or the things in the world. (T)If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, (U)the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And (V)the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Deceptions of the Last Hour

18 (W)Little children, (X)it is the last hour; and as you have heard that (Y)the[d] Antichrist is coming, (Z)even now many antichrists have come, by which we know (AA)that it is the last hour. 19 (AB)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for (AC)if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out (AD)that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

20 But (AE)you have an anointing (AF)from the Holy One, and (AG)you[e] know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

22 (AH)Who is a liar but he who denies that (AI)Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23 (AJ)Whoever denies the Son does not have the (AK)Father either; (AL)he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

Let Truth Abide in You

24 Therefore let that abide in you (AM)which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, (AN)you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 (AO)And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to [f]deceive you. 27 But the (AP)anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and (AQ)you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing (AR)teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you [g]will abide in Him.

Praise to God for His Word and Providence

147 Praise[a] the Lord!
For (A)it is good to sing praises to our God;
(B)For it is pleasant, and (C)praise is beautiful.

The Lord (D)builds up Jerusalem;
(E)He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.
(F)He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their [b]wounds.
(G)He counts the number of the stars;
He calls them all by name.
(H)Great is our Lord, and (I)mighty in power;
(J)His understanding is infinite.
(K)The Lord lifts up the humble;
He casts the wicked down to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
Sing praises on the harp to our God,
(L)Who covers the heavens with clouds,
Who prepares rain for the earth,
Who makes grass to grow on the mountains.
(M)He gives to the beast its food,
And (N)to the young ravens that cry.

10 (O)He does not delight in the strength of the horse;
He takes no pleasure in the legs of a man.
11 The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him,
In those who hope in His mercy.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For He has strengthened the bars of your gates;
He has blessed your children within you.
14 (P)He makes peace in your borders,
And (Q)fills you with [c]the finest wheat.

15 (R)He sends out His command to the earth;
His word runs very swiftly.
16 (S)He gives snow like wool;
He scatters the frost like ashes;
17 He casts out His hail like [d]morsels;
Who can stand before His cold?
18 (T)He sends out His word and melts them;
He causes His wind to blow, and the waters flow.

19 (U)He declares His word to Jacob,
(V)His statutes and His judgments to Israel.
20 (W)He has not dealt thus with any nation;
And as for His judgments, they have not known them.

[e]Praise the Lord!
