Romans 8-10 (English Standard Version)

Romans 8

Life in the Spirit
 1There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.[a] 2For the law of(A) the Spirit of life(B) has set you[b] free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. 3For(C) God has done what the law,(D) weakened by the flesh,(E) could not do.(F) By sending his own Son(G) in the likeness of sinful flesh and(H) for sin,[c] he condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that(I) the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us,(J) who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5For(K) those who live according to the flesh set their minds on(L) the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on(M) the things of the Spirit. 6For to set(N) the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For the mind that is set on the flesh is(O) hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law;(P) indeed, it cannot. 8Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

 9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact(Q) the Spirit of God dwells in you.(R) Anyone who does not have(S) the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of(T) him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(U) through his Spirit who dwells in you.

Heirs with Christ
 12So then, brothers,[d] we are debtors,(V) not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you(W) put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14For all who are(X) led by the Spirit of God are(Y) sons[e] of God. 15For(Z) you did not receive(AA) the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of(AB) adoption as sons, by whom we cry,(AC) "Abba! Father!" 16(AD) The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then(AE) heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,(AF) provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Future Glory
 18For I consider that the sufferings of this present time(AG) are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for(AH) the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation(AI) was subjected to futility, not willingly, but(AJ) because of him who subjected it, in hope 21that(AK) the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22For we know that(AL) the whole creation(AM) has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have(AN) the firstfruits of the Spirit,(AO) groan inwardly as(AP) we wait eagerly for adoption as sons,(AQ) the redemption of our bodies. 24For(AR) in this hope we were saved. Now(AS) hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25But if we hope for what we do not see, we(AT) wait for it with patience.

 26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For(AU) we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but(AV) the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And(AW) he who searches hearts knows what is(AX) the mind of the Spirit, because[f] the Spirit(AY) intercedes for the saints(AZ) according to the will of God. 28And we know that for those who love God all things work together(BA) for good,[g] for(BB) those who are called according to his purpose. 29For those whom he(BC) foreknew he also(BD) predestined(BE) to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be(BF) the firstborn among many brothers. 30And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also(BG) justified, and those whom he justified he also(BH) glorified.

God’s Everlasting Love
 31What then shall we say to these things?(BI) If God is for us, who can be[h] against us? 32(BJ) He who did not spare his own Son but(BK) gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?(BL) It is God who justifies. 34(BM) Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—(BN) who is at the right hand of God,(BO) who indeed is interceding for us.[i] 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36As it is written,

   (BP) "For your sake(BQ) we are being killed all the day long;
   we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered."

 37No, in all these things we are more than(BR) conquerors through(BS) him who loved us. 38For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 9

God’s Sovereign Choice
 1(BT) I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3For(BU) I could wish that I myself were(BV) accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers,[j] my kinsmen(BW) according to the flesh. 4They are(BX) Israelites, and to them belong(BY) the adoption,(BZ) the glory,(CA) the covenants,(CB) the giving of the law,(CC) the worship, and(CD) the promises. 5To them belong(CE) the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ(CF) who is God over all,(CG) blessed forever. Amen.

 6But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7and not all are children of Abraham(CH) because they are his offspring, but(CI) "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." 8This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but(CJ) the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9For this is what the promise said:(CK) "About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son." 10And not only so, but(CL) also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of(CM) him who calls— 12she was told,(CN) "The older will serve the younger." 13As it is written,(CO) "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."

 14What shall we say then?(CP) Is there injustice on God’s part? By no means! 15For he says to Moses,(CQ) "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16So then it depends not on human will or exertion,[k] but on God, who has mercy. 17For the Scripture says to Pharaoh,(CR) "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I might show my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth." 18So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.

 19You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For(CS) who can resist his will?" 20But who are you, O man,(CT) to answer back to God?(CU) Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me like this?" 21(CV) Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump(CW) one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use? 22What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience(CX) vessels of wrath(CY) prepared for destruction, 23in order to make known(CZ) the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he(DA) has prepared beforehand for glory— 24even us whom he(DB) has called,(DC) not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25As indeed he says in Hosea,

   (DD) "Those who were not my people I will call 'my people,'
   and her who was not beloved I will call 'beloved.'"
26(DE) "And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,'
   there they will be called(DF) 'sons of the living God.'"

 27And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel:(DG) "Though the number of the sons of Israel[l] be as the sand of the sea,(DH) only a remnant of them will be saved, 28for the Lord will carry out his sentence upon the earth fully and without delay." 29And as Isaiah predicted,

   (DI) (DJ) "If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,
   (DK) we would have been like Sodom
   and become like Gomorrah."

Israel’s Unbelief
 30What shall we say, then?(DL) That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is,(DM) a righteousness that is by faith; 31but that Israel(DN) who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness[m](DO) did not succeed in reaching that law. 32Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the(DP) stumbling stone, 33as it is written,

   (DQ) "Behold, I am laying in Zion(DR) a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense;
   (DS) and whoever believes in him will not be(DT) put to shame."

Romans 10

 1Brothers,[n] my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. 2For I bear them witness that(DU) they have a zeal for God,(DV) but not according to knowledge. 3For, being ignorant of(DW) the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. 4For(DX) Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.[o]

The Message of Salvation to All
 5For(DY) Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that(DZ) the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6But(EA) the righteousness based on faith says,(EB) "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7or "'Who will descend into the(EC) abyss?'" (that is,(ED) to bring Christ up from the dead). 8But what does it say?(EE) "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9because, if(EF) you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and(EG) believe in your heart(EH) that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11For the Scripture says,(EI) "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame." 12(EJ) For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek;(EK) for the same Lord is Lord of all,(EL) bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13For(EM) "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

 14How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him(EN) of whom they have never heard?[p] And how are they to hear(EO) without someone preaching? 15And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written,(EP) "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!" 16But(EQ) they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says,(ER) "Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?" 17So(ES) faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

 18But I ask, have they not heard? Indeed they have, for

   (ET) "Their voice has gone out(EU) to all the earth,
   and their words to the ends of the world."

 19But I ask, did Israel not understand? First Moses says,

   (EV) "I will(EW) make you jealous of those who are not a nation;
   with a(EX) foolish nation I will make you angry."

 20Then Isaiah is so bold as to say,

   (EY) "I have been found by those who did not seek me;
   I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me."

 21But of Israel he says,(EZ) "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and contrary people."
