17 (A)A firstborn bull[a]—he has majesty,
    and his horns are the horns of a (B)wild ox;
with them (C)he shall gore the peoples,
    all of them, to the ends of the earth;
(D)they are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
    and they are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18 And of Zebulun he said,

(E)“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
    and Issachar, in your tents.
19 They shall call peoples (F)to their mountain;
    there they offer (G)right sacrifices;
for they draw from the abundance of the seas
    and the hidden treasures of the sand.”

20 And (H)of Gad he said,

“Blessed be he who enlarges Gad!
    Gad crouches (I)like a lion;
    he tears off arm and scalp.
21 (J)He chose the best of the land for himself,
    for there a commander's portion was reserved;
and (K)he came with the heads of the people,
    with Israel he executed the justice of the Lord,
    and his judgments for Israel.”

22 And (L)of Dan he said,

(M)“Dan is a lion's cub
    (N)that leaps from Bashan.”

23 And (O)of Naphtali he said,

“O Naphtali, sated with favor,
    and full of the blessing of the Lord,
    (P)possess the lake[b] and the south.”

24 And (Q)of Asher he said,

“Most blessed of sons be Asher;
    let him be the favorite of his brothers,
    and let him (R)dip his foot in oil.
25 Your bars shall be iron and bronze,
    and as your days, so shall your strength be.

26 (S)“There is none like God, O (T)Jeshurun,
    (U)who rides through the heavens to your help,
    through the skies in his majesty.
27 The eternal God is your (V)dwelling place,[c]
    and underneath are the everlasting arms.[d]
And he thrust out the enemy before you
    and said, ‘Destroy.’
28 So Israel lived in safety,
    (W)Jacob lived (X)alone,[e]
in a land of grain and wine,
    whose heavens drop down dew.
29 Happy are you, O Israel! (Y)Who is like you,
    a people (Z)saved by the Lord,
(AA)the shield of your help,
    and the sword of your triumph!
Your enemies shall come fawning to you,
    and you shall tread upon their backs.”

The Death of Moses

34 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab (AB)to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah (AC)as far as the western sea, (AD)the Negeb, and (AE)the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho (AF)the city of palm trees, as far as (AG)Zoar. And the Lord said to him, (AH)“This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ (AI)I have let you see it with your eyes, but (AJ)you shall not go over there.” So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but (AK)no one knows the place of his burial to this day. (AL)Moses was 120 years old when he died. (AM)His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel (AN)wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

And Joshua the son of Nun was full of (AO)the spirit of wisdom, for (AP)Moses had laid his hands on him. So (AQ)the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 And there has not (AR)arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, (AS)whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 none like him for all (AT)the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 12 and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

God Commissions Joshua

After the death of Moses the (AU)servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' (AV)assistant, “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. (AW)Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. (AX)From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. (AY)No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just (AZ)as I was with Moses, so (BA)I will be with you. (BB)I will not leave you or forsake you. (BC)Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and (BD)very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law (BE)that Moses my servant commanded you. (BF)Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success[f] wherever you go. This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but (BG)you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? (BH)Be strong and courageous. (BI)Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua Assumes Command

10 And Joshua commanded the (BJ)officers of the people, 11 “Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, ‘Prepare your provisions, for (BK)within three days (BL)you are to pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’”

12 And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, 13 “Remember the word that (BM)Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, saying, ‘The Lord your God is providing you a place of rest and will give you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your livestock shall remain in the land that Moses gave you beyond the Jordan, but all the men of valor among you shall pass over armed before your brothers and shall help them, 15 (BN)until the Lord gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving them. (BO)Then you shall return to the land of your possession and shall possess it, the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

16 And they answered Joshua, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God (BP)be with you, as he was with Moses! 18 Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. (BQ)Only be strong and courageous.”
