⁴ I said, “Have mercy^(J) on me, Lord;
    heal^(K) me, for I have sinned^(L) against you.”
⁵ My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die and his name perish?^(M)”
⁶ When one of them comes to see me,
    he speaks falsely,^(N) while his heart gathers slander;^(O)
    then he goes out and spreads^(P) it around.

⁷ All my enemies whisper together^(Q) against me;
    they imagine the worst for me, saying,
⁸ “A vile disease has afflicted him;
    he will never get up^(R) from the place where he lies.”
⁹ Even my close friend,^(S)
    someone I trusted,
one who shared my bread,
    has turned^[b] against me.^(T)

    the peoples shake their heads^(DR) at us.
¹⁵ I live in disgrace^(DS) all day long,
    and my face is covered with shame^(DT)
16 at the taunts^(DU) of those who reproach and revile^(DV) me,
    because of the enemy, who is bent on revenge.^(DW)

¹⁷ All this came upon us,
    though we had not forgotten^(DX) you;
    we had not been false to your covenant.
¹⁸ Our hearts had not turned^(DY) back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
¹⁹ But you crushed^(DZ) us and made us a haunt for jackals;^(EA)
    you covered us over with deep darkness.^(EB)

²⁰ If we had forgotten^(EC) the name of our God
    or spread out our hands to a foreign god,^(ED)
21 would not God have discovered it,
    since he knows the secrets of the heart?^(EE)
22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep^(EF) to be slaughtered.^(EG)

²³ Awake,^(EH) Lord! Why do you sleep?^(EI)
    Rouse yourself!^(EJ) Do not reject us forever.^(EK)
24 Why do you hide your face^(EL)
    and forget^(EM) our misery and oppression?^(EN)

²⁵ We are brought down to the dust;^(EO)
    our bodies cling to the ground.
²⁶ Rise up^(EP) and help us;
    rescue^(EQ) us because of your unfailing love.^(ER)

To show partiality^(V) in judging is not good:^(W)
24 Whoever says to the guilty, “You are innocent,”^(X)
    will be cursed by peoples and denounced by nations.
²⁵ But it will go well with those who convict the guilty,
    and rich blessing will come on them.

²⁶ An honest answer
    is like a kiss on the lips.

²⁷ Put your outdoor work in order
    and get your fields ready;
    after that, build your house.

²⁸ Do not testify against your neighbor without cause^(Y)—
    would you use your lips to mislead?
²⁹ Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me;
    I’ll pay them back for what they did.”^(Z)

³⁰ I went past the field of a sluggard,^(AA)
    past the vineyard of someone who has no sense;
³¹ thorns had come up everywhere,
    the ground was covered with weeds,
    and the stone wall was in ruins.
³² I applied my heart to what I observed
    and learned a lesson from what I saw:
³³ A little sleep, a little slumber,
    a little folding of the hands to rest^(AB)—
³⁴ and poverty will come on you like a thief
    and scarcity like an armed man.^(AC)
