Prophecies against Neighboring Nations
9 The pronouncement of the word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrach, with (A)Damascus as its resting place (for the eyes of mankind, especially of all the tribes of Israel, are toward the Lord),
2 And (B)Hamath also, which borders on it;
(C)Tyre and (D)Sidon, [a]though [b]they are (E)very wise.
3 For Tyre built herself a (F)fortress,
And (G)piled up silver like dust,
And (H)gold like the mud of the streets.
4 Behold, the Lord will (I)dispossess her
And throw her wealth into the sea;
And she will be (J)consumed with fire.
5 Ashkelon will see it and be afraid.
Gaza too will writhe in great pain;
Also Ekron, because her hope has been ruined.
Moreover, the king will perish from Gaza,
And Ashkelon will not be inhabited.
6 And a people of mixed origins will live in (K)Ashdod,
And I will eliminate the pride of the Philistines.
7 And I will remove their blood from their mouth
And their detestable things from between their teeth.
Then they also will be a remnant for our God,
And be like a [c]clan in Judah,
And Ekron will be like a Jebusite.
8 But I will camp around My house [d]because of an army,
Because of (L)him who passes by and returns;
And (M)no oppressor will pass over them anymore,
For now I have seen with My eyes.
9 (N)Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion!
Shout in triumph, daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your (O)king is coming to you;
He is [e](P)righteous and (Q)endowed with salvation,
(R)Humble, and mounted on a donkey,
Even on a (S)colt, the [f]foal of a donkey.
10 And I will (T)eliminate the chariot from Ephraim
And the (U)horse from Jerusalem;
And the (V)bow of war will be eliminated.
And He will speak (W)peace to the nations;
And His (X)dominion will be from sea to sea,
And from the Euphrates River to the ends of the earth.
Restoration of Judah and Ephraim
11 As for you also, because of the (Y)blood of My covenant with you,
I have set your (Z)prisoners free from the [g]waterless pit.
12 Return to the [h](AA)stronghold, you prisoners [i]who have the (AB)hope;
This very day I am declaring that I will restore (AC)double to you.
13 For I will (AD)bend Judah [j]as My bow,
I will fill the bow with Ephraim.
And I will stir up your sons, Zion, against your sons, (AE)Greece;
And I will make you like a (AF)warrior’s sword.
14 Then the Lord will appear (AG)over them,
And His (AH)arrow will go forth like lightning;
And the Lord [k]God will blow the (AI)trumpet,
And march in the (AJ)storm winds of the south.
15 (AK)The Lord of armies will protect them.
And they will (AL)devour and trample on the (AM)slingstones;
And they will drink and be (AN)boisterous as with wine;
And they will be filled like a sacrificial basin,
Drenched like the (AO)corners of the altar.
16 And the Lord their God will (AP)save them on that day
As the flock of His people;
For they are like the precious stones of a (AQ)crown,
Sparkling on His land.
17 For how great will [l]their (AR)loveliness and (AS)beauty be!
Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine, the virgins.
God Will Bless Judah and Ephraim
10 Ask for (AT)rain from the Lord at the time of the spring rain—
The Lord who (AU)makes the [m]storm winds;
And He will give them (AV)showers of rain, vegetation in the field to each person.
2 For the [n](AW)household idols speak deception,
And the (AX)diviners see [o]an illusion
And tell (AY)deceitful dreams;
They comfort in vain.
Therefore the people [p]wander like (AZ)sheep,
They are wretched because there is no shepherd.
3 “My (BA)anger is kindled against the shepherds,
And I will punish the [q]male goats;
For the Lord of armies has (BB)visited His flock, the house of Judah,
And will make them like His majestic horse in battle.
4 From [r]them will come the (BC)cornerstone,
From [s]them the tent peg,
From [t]them the bow of (BD)battle,
From [u]them every tyrant, all of them together.
5 And they will be like warriors,
(BE)Trampling down the enemy in the mud of the streets in battle;
And they will fight, because the Lord will be with them;
And the (BF)riders on horses will be put to shame.
6 And I will (BG)strengthen the house of Judah,
And I will (BH)save the house of Joseph,
And I will [v](BI)bring them back,
Because I have had (BJ)compassion on them;
And they will be as though I had (BK)not rejected them,
For I am the Lord their God and I will (BL)answer them.
7 Ephraim will be like a warrior,
And their heart will be joyful as if from wine;
Indeed, their (BM)children will see it and be joyful,
[w]Their heart will rejoice in the Lord.
8 I will (BN)whistle for them and gather them together,
For I have redeemed them;
And they will be as (BO)numerous as they [x](BP)were before.
9 When I [y]scatter them among the peoples,
They will (BQ)remember Me in distant countries,
And they with their children will live and come back.
10 I will (BR)bring them back from the land of Egypt
And gather them from Assyria;
And I will bring them into the land of (BS)Gilead and Lebanon
[z]Until (BT)no room can be found for them.
11 And they will pass through the (BU)sea of distress
And He will strike the waves in the sea,
So that all the depths of the (BV)Nile will dry up;
And the pride of (BW)Assyria will be brought down,
And the scepter of (BX)Egypt will depart.
12 And I will (BY)strengthen them in the Lord,
And in His name (BZ)they will walk,” declares the Lord.
The Doomed Flock
11 Open your doors, Lebanon,
So that a (CA)fire may feed on your (CB)cedars.
2 Wail, juniper, because the cedar has fallen,
For the magnificent trees have been destroyed;
Wail, oaks of Bashan,
Because the [aa]impenetrable forest has come down.
3 There is a sound of the shepherds’ (CC)wail,
For their splendor is ruined;
There is a (CD)sound of the young lions’ roar,
For the [ab]pride of the Jordan is ruined.
4 This is what the Lord my God says: “Pasture the flock doomed to (CE)slaughter. 5 Those who buy them slaughter them and [ac]go (CF)unpunished, and each of those who sell them says, ‘Blessed be the Lord, for (CG)I have become rich!’ And their (CH)own shepherds have no compassion for them. 6 For I will (CI)no longer have compassion for the inhabitants of the land,” declares the Lord; “but behold, I will (CJ)let the people fall, each into another’s [ad]power and into the [ae]power of his king; and they will crush the land, and I will (CK)not rescue them from their [af]power.”
7 So I (CL)pastured the flock doomed to slaughter, [ag]therefore also the (CM)afflicted of the flock. And I took for myself two (CN)staffs: the one I called [ah](CO)Favor, and the other I called (CP)Union; so I pastured the flock. 8 Then I did away with the three shepherds in (CQ)one month, for my soul was impatient with them, and their soul also [ai]was tired of me. 9 Then I said, “I will not pasture you. What is to (CR)die, [aj]let it die, and what is to perish, [ak]let it perish; and [al]let those who are left eat one another’s flesh.” 10 And I took my staff [am](CS)Favor and cut it in pieces, to [an](CT)break my covenant which I had made with all the peoples. 11 So it was [ao]broken on that day, and [ap]so the (CU)afflicted of the flock who were watching me realized that it was the word of the Lord. 12 And I said to them, “If it is good in your sight, give me my (CV)wages; but if not, [aq]never mind!” So they weighed out (CW)thirty shekels of silver as my wages. 13 Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the (CX)potter, that magnificent price at which I was valued by them.” So I took the thirty shekels of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of the Lord. 14 Then I cut in pieces my second staff (CY)Union, to (CZ)break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.
15 And the Lord said to me, “Take again for yourself the equipment of a (DA)foolish shepherd. 16 For behold, I am going to raise up a shepherd in the land who will (DB)not care for the perishing, seek the scattered, heal the broken, or provide for the one who is exhausted, but will (DC)devour the flesh of the fat sheep and tear off their hoofs.
17 (DD)Woe to the worthless shepherd
Who abandons the flock!
A (DE)sword will be on his arm
And on his right eye!
His (DF)arm will be totally withered,
And his right eye will be [ar]blind.”
Jerusalem to Be Attacked
12 The pronouncement of the word of the Lord concerning Israel:
The Lord who (DG)stretches out the heavens, (DH)lays the foundation of the earth, and (DI)forms the spirit of a person within him, declares: 2 “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a (DJ)cup [as]that causes staggering to all the peoples around; and when the siege is against Jerusalem, it will also be against (DK)Judah. 3 It will come about on that day that I will make Jerusalem a heavy (DL)stone for all the peoples; all who lift it will (DM)injure themselves severely. And all the (DN)nations of the earth will be gathered against it. 4 On that day,” declares the Lord, “I will strike every horse with confusion and its rider with insanity. But I will [at]watch over the house of Judah, while I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 Then the [au]clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem are a [av]strong support for us through the Lord of armies, their God.’
6 “On that day I will make the [aw]clans of Judah like a (DO)firepot among pieces of wood and a flaming torch among sheaves, so they will consume on the right and on the left all the surrounding peoples, while [ax]the (DP)inhabitants of Jerusalem again live on their own sites in Jerusalem. 7 The Lord also will (DQ)save the tents of Judah first, so that the glory of the house of (DR)David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem will not be greater than Judah. 8 On that day the Lord will (DS)protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the one who [ay](DT)is feeble among them on that day will be like David, and the house of David will be like (DU)God, like the (DV)angel of the Lord before them. 9 And on that day I will (DW)seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
10 “And I will (DX)pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem [az]the Spirit of grace and of pleading, so that they will look at Me whom they (DY)pierced; and they will mourn for Him, like one (DZ)mourning for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn. 11 On that day the (EA)mourning in Jerusalem will be great, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the [ba]plain of [bb]Megiddo. 12 The land will mourn, every family by itself; the family of the house of David by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself and their wives by themselves; 14 all the families that are left, every family by itself, and their wives by themselves.

Judgment on Israel’s Enemies
9 A prophecy:(A)
The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak
and will come to rest on Damascus(B)—
for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel
are on the Lord—[a]
2 and on Hamath(C) too, which borders on it,
and on Tyre(D) and Sidon,(E) though they are very skillful.
3 Tyre has built herself a stronghold;
she has heaped up silver like dust,
and gold like the dirt of the streets.(F)
4 But the Lord will take away her possessions
and destroy(G) her power on the sea,
and she will be consumed by fire.(H)
5 Ashkelon(I) will see it and fear;
Gaza will writhe in agony,
and Ekron too, for her hope will wither.
Gaza will lose her king
and Ashkelon will be deserted.
6 A mongrel people will occupy Ashdod,
and I will put an end(J) to the pride of the Philistines.
7 I will take the blood from their mouths,
the forbidden food from between their teeth.
Those who are left will belong to our God(K)
and become a clan in Judah,
and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.(L)
8 But I will encamp(M) at my temple
to guard it against marauding forces.(N)
Never again will an oppressor overrun my people,
for now I am keeping watch.(O)
The Coming of Zion’s King
9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!(P)
Shout,(Q) Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,(R)
righteous and victorious,(S)
lowly and riding on a donkey,(T)
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.(U)
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.(V)
He will proclaim peace(W) to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River[b] to the ends of the earth.(X)
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant(Y) with you,
I will free your prisoners(Z) from the waterless pit.(AA)
12 Return to your fortress,(AB) you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice(AC) as much to you.
13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow(AD)
and fill it with Ephraim.(AE)
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,(AF)
and make you like a warrior’s sword.(AG)
The Lord Will Appear
14 Then the Lord will appear over them;(AH)
his arrow will flash like lightning.(AI)
The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet;(AJ)
he will march in the storms(AK) of the south,
15 and the Lord Almighty will shield(AL) them.
They will destroy
and overcome with slingstones.(AM)
They will drink and roar as with wine;(AN)
they will be full like a bowl(AO)
used for sprinkling[c] the corners(AP) of the altar.
16 The Lord their God will save his people on that day(AQ)
as a shepherd saves his flock.
They will sparkle in his land
like jewels in a crown.(AR)
17 How attractive and beautiful they will be!
Grain will make the young men thrive,
and new wine the young women.
The Lord Will Care for Judah
10 Ask the Lord for rain in the springtime;
it is the Lord who sends the thunderstorms.
He gives showers of rain(AS) to all people,
and plants of the field(AT) to everyone.
2 The idols(AU) speak deceitfully,
diviners(AV) see visions that lie;
they tell dreams(AW) that are false,
they give comfort in vain.(AX)
Therefore the people wander like sheep
oppressed for lack of a shepherd.(AY)
3 “My anger burns against the shepherds,
and I will punish the leaders;(AZ)
for the Lord Almighty will care
for his flock, the people of Judah,
and make them like a proud horse in battle.(BA)
4 From Judah will come the cornerstone,(BB)
from him the tent peg,(BC)
from him the battle bow,(BD)
from him every ruler.
5 Together they[d] will be like warriors in battle
trampling their enemy into the mud of the streets.(BE)
They will fight because the Lord is with them,
and they will put the enemy horsemen to shame.(BF)
6 “I will strengthen(BG) Judah
and save the tribes of Joseph.
I will restore them
because I have compassion(BH) on them.(BI)
They will be as though
I had not rejected them,
for I am the Lord their God
and I will answer(BJ) them.
7 The Ephraimites will become like warriors,
and their hearts will be glad as with wine.(BK)
Their children will see it and be joyful;
their hearts will rejoice(BL) in the Lord.
8 I will signal(BM) for them
and gather them in.
Surely I will redeem them;
they will be as numerous(BN) as before.
9 Though I scatter them among the peoples,
yet in distant lands they will remember me.(BO)
They and their children will survive,
and they will return.
10 I will bring them back from Egypt
and gather them from Assyria.(BP)
I will bring them to Gilead(BQ) and Lebanon,
and there will not be room(BR) enough for them.
11 They will pass through the sea of trouble;
the surging sea will be subdued
and all the depths of the Nile will dry up.(BS)
Assyria’s pride(BT) will be brought down
and Egypt’s scepter(BU) will pass away.(BV)
12 I will strengthen(BW) them in the Lord
and in his name they will live securely,(BX)”
declares the Lord.
11 Open your doors, Lebanon,(BY)
so that fire(BZ) may devour your cedars!
2 Wail, you juniper, for the cedar has fallen;
the stately trees are ruined!
Wail, oaks(CA) of Bashan;
the dense forest(CB) has been cut down!(CC)
3 Listen to the wail of the shepherds;
their rich pastures are destroyed!
Listen to the roar of the lions;(CD)
the lush thicket of the Jordan is ruined!(CE)
Two Shepherds
4 This is what the Lord my God says: “Shepherd the flock marked for slaughter.(CF) 5 Their buyers slaughter them and go unpunished. Those who sell them say, ‘Praise the Lord, I am rich!’ Their own shepherds do not spare them.(CG) 6 For I will no longer have pity on the people of the land,” declares the Lord. “I will give everyone into the hands of their neighbors(CH) and their king. They will devastate the land, and I will not rescue anyone from their hands.”(CI)
7 So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter,(CJ) particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock. 8 In one month I got rid of the three shepherds.
The flock detested(CK) me, and I grew weary of them 9 and said, “I will not be your shepherd. Let the dying die, and the perishing perish.(CL) Let those who are left eat(CM) one another’s flesh.”
10 Then I took my staff called Favor(CN) and broke it, revoking(CO) the covenant I had made with all the nations. 11 It was revoked on that day, and so the oppressed of the flock who were watching me knew it was the word of the Lord.
12 I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.(CP)
13 And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they valued me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver(CQ) and threw them to the potter at the house of the Lord.(CR)
14 Then I broke my second staff called Union, breaking the family bond between Judah and Israel.
15 Then the Lord said to me, “Take again the equipment of a foolish shepherd. 16 For I am going to raise up a shepherd over the land who will not care for the lost, or seek the young, or heal the injured, or feed the healthy, but will eat the meat of the choice sheep, tearing off their hooves.
17 “Woe to the worthless shepherd,(CS)
who deserts the flock!
May the sword strike his arm(CT) and his right eye!
May his arm be completely withered,
his right eye totally blinded!”(CU)
Jerusalem’s Enemies to Be Destroyed
12 A prophecy:(CV) The word of the Lord concerning Israel.
The Lord, who stretches out the heavens,(CW) who lays the foundation of the earth,(CX) and who forms the human spirit within a person,(CY) declares: 2 “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup(CZ) that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling.(DA) Judah(DB) will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. 3 On that day, when all the nations(DC) of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock(DD) for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure(DE) themselves. 4 On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness,” declares the Lord. “I will keep a watchful eye over Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations.(DF) 5 Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The people of Jerusalem are strong,(DG) because the Lord Almighty is their God.’
6 “On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a firepot(DH) in a woodpile, like a flaming torch among sheaves. They will consume(DI) all the surrounding peoples right and left, but Jerusalem will remain intact(DJ) in her place.
7 “The Lord will save the dwellings of Judah first, so that the honor of the house of David and of Jerusalem’s inhabitants may not be greater than that of Judah.(DK) 8 On that day the Lord will shield(DL) those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest(DM) among them will be like David, and the house of David will be like God,(DN) like the angel of the Lord going before(DO) them. 9 On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations(DP) that attack Jerusalem.(DQ)
Mourning for the One They Pierced
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit[e](DR) of grace and supplication.(DS) They will look on[f] me, the one they have pierced,(DT) and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,(DU) and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.(DV) 11 On that day the weeping(DW) in Jerusalem will be as great as the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo.(DX) 12 The land will mourn,(DY) each clan by itself, with their wives by themselves: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, 13 the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives, 14 and all the rest of the clans and their wives.(DZ)

Satan Bound
20 Then I saw (A)an angel coming down from heaven, holding the (B)key of the abyss and a great chain [a]in his hand. 2 And he took hold of the (C)dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and (D)bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he threw him into the (E)abyss and shut it and (F)sealed it over him, so that he would (G)not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.
4 Then I saw (H)thrones, and (I)they sat on them, and (J)judgment was given to them. And I saw (K)the souls of those who had been beheaded because of [b]their (L)testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not (M)worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the (N)mark on their foreheads and on their hands; and they (O)came to life and (P)reigned with Christ for a thousand years. 5 The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. (Q)This is the first resurrection. 6 (R)Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the (S)second death has no power, but they will be (T)priests of God and of Christ, and will (U)reign with Him for a thousand years.
Satan Freed and Doomed
7 When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be (V)released from his prison, 8 and will come out to (W)deceive the nations which are at the (X)four corners of the earth, (Y)Gog and Magog, to (Z)gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the (AA)sand of the [c]seashore. 9 And they (AB)came up on the [d]broad plain of the earth and surrounded the (AC)camp of the [e]saints and the (AD)beloved city, and (AE)fire came down from heaven and devoured them. 10 And (AF)the devil who (AG)deceived them was thrown into the (AH)lake of fire and [f]brimstone, where the (AI)beast and the (AJ)false prophet are also; and they will be (AK)tormented day and night forever and ever.
Judgment at the Throne of God
11 Then I saw a great white (AL)throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose [g]presence (AM)earth and heaven fled, and (AN)no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the (AO)great and the small, standing before the throne, and [h](AP)books were opened; and another [i]book was opened, which is (AQ)the book of life; and the dead (AR)were judged from the things which were written in the [j]books, (AS)according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and (AT)Death and Hades (AU)gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them (AV)according to their deeds. 14 Then (AW)Death and Hades were thrown into (AX)the lake of fire. This is the (AY)second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if [k]anyone’s name was not found written in (AZ)the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The Thousand Years
20 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven,(A) having the key(B) to the Abyss(C) and holding in his hand a great chain. 2 He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan,(D) and bound him for a thousand years.(E) 3 He threw him into the Abyss,(F) and locked and sealed(G) it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations(H) anymore until the thousand years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
4 I saw thrones(I) on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge.(J) And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded(K) because of their testimony about Jesus(L) and because of the word of God.(M) They[a] had not worshiped the beast(N) or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands.(O) They came to life and reigned(P) with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection.(Q) 6 Blessed(R) and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death(S) has no power over them, but they will be priests(T) of God and of Christ and will reign with him(U) for a thousand years.
The Judgment of Satan
7 When the thousand years are over,(V) Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations(W) in the four corners of the earth(X)—Gog and Magog(Y)—and to gather them for battle.(Z) In number they are like the sand on the seashore.(AA) 9 They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded(AB) the camp of God’s people, the city he loves.(AC) But fire came down from heaven(AD) and devoured them. 10 And the devil, who deceived them,(AE) was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur,(AF) where the beast(AG) and the false prophet(AH) had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.(AI)
The Judgment of the Dead
11 Then I saw a great white throne(AJ) and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence,(AK) and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small,(AL) standing before the throne, and books were opened.(AM) Another book was opened, which is the book of life.(AN) The dead were judged(AO) according to what they had done(AP) as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades(AQ) gave up the dead(AR) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.(AS) 14 Then death(AT) and Hades(AU) were thrown into the lake of fire.(AV) The lake of fire is the second death.(AW) 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life(AX) was thrown into the lake of fire.
