Greeting

Paul, (A)a servant[a] of Christ Jesus, (B)called to be an apostle, (C)set apart for the gospel of God, which (D)he promised beforehand (E)through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning his Son, (F)who was descended from David[b] (G)according to the flesh and (H)was declared to be the Son of God (I)in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom (J)we have received grace and (K)apostleship (L)to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name (M)among all the nations, including you who are (N)called to belong to Jesus Christ,

To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:

(O)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Longing to Go to Rome

First, (P)I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, (Q)because your faith is proclaimed in all the world. (R)For God is my witness, (S)whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, (T)that without ceasing I mention you 10 always in my prayers, asking that somehow (U)by God's will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. 11 For (V)I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— 12 that is, that we may be mutually encouraged (W)by each other's faith, both yours and mine. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,[c] that (X)I have often intended to come to you (but (Y)thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some (Z)harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14 (AA)I am under obligation both to Greeks and to (AB)barbarians,[d] both to the wise and to the foolish. 15 So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

16 For (AC)I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is (AD)the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew (AE)first and also to (AF)the Greek. 17 For in it (AG)the righteousness of God is revealed (AH)from faith for faith,[e] (AI)as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”[f]

God's Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 For (AJ)the wrath of God (AK)is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be (AL)known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, (AM)have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they (AN)became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 (AO)Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and (AP)exchanged the glory of (AQ)the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore (AR)God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to (AS)the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for (AT)a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, (AU)who is blessed forever! Amen.

26 For this reason (AV)God gave them up to (AW)dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, (AX)men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, (AY)God gave them up to (AZ)a debased mind to do (BA)what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know (BB)God's righteous decree that those who practice such things (BC)deserve to die, they not only do them but (BD)give approval to those who practice them.

God's Righteous Judgment

Therefore you have (BE)no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For (BF)in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on (BG)the riches of his kindness and (BH)forbearance and (BI)patience, (BJ)not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are (BK)storing up (BL)wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed.

(BM)He will render to each one according to his works: to those who (BN)by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking[h] and (BO)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress (BP)for every human being who does evil, the Jew (BQ)first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and (BR)peace for everyone who does good, (BS)the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For (BT)God shows no partiality.

God's Judgment and the Law

12 For all who have sinned (BU)without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For (BV)it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, (BW)by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is (BX)written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 (BY)on that day when, (BZ)according to my gospel, God judges (CA)the secrets of men (CB)by Christ Jesus.

17 But if you call yourself a Jew and (CC)rely on the law and boast in God 18 and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; 19 and if you are sure that you yourself are (CD)a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law (CE)the embodiment of (CF)knowledge and truth— 21 (CG)you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you (CH)rob temples? 23 You who (CI)boast in the law (CJ)dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, (CK)as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed (CL)among the Gentiles because of you.”

25 For circumcision indeed is of value (CM)if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. 26 So, if (CN)a man who is uncircumcised keeps (CO)the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded[i] as circumcision? 27 Then he who is physically[j] uncircumcised but keeps the law (CP)will condemn you who have (CQ)the written code[k] and circumcision but break the law. 28 For (CR)no one is a Jew (CS)who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. 29 But a Jew is one (CT)inwardly, and (CU)circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. (CV)His praise is not from man but from God.

God's Righteousness Upheld

Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? Much in every way. To begin with, (CW)the Jews were entrusted with (CX)the oracles of God. (CY)What if some were unfaithful? (CZ)Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? By no means! (DA)Let God be true though (DB)every one were a liar, as it is written,

(DC)“That you may be justified in your words,
    and prevail when you (DD)are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict (DE)wrath on us? ((DF)I speak in a human way.) By no means! For then how could (DG)God judge the world? But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, (DH)why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not (DI)do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.

No One Is Righteous

What then? Are we Jews[l] any better off?[m] No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both (DJ)Jews and (DK)Greeks, are (DL)under sin, 10 as it is written:

(DM)“None is righteous, no, not one;
11     no one understands;
    no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
    no one does good,
    not even one.”
13 (DN)“Their throat is (DO)an open grave;
    they use their tongues to deceive.”
(DP)“The venom of asps is under their lips.”
14     (DQ)“Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”
15 (DR)“Their feet are swift to shed blood;
16     in their paths are ruin and misery,
17 and (DS)the way of peace they have not known.”
18     (DT)“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever (DU)the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, (DV)so that every mouth may be stopped, and (DW)the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For (DX)by works of the law no human being[n] will be justified in his sight, since (DY)through the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith

21 But now (DZ)the righteousness of God (EA)has been manifested apart from the law, although (EB)the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God (EC)through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. (ED)For there is no distinction: 23 for (EE)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 (EF)and are justified (EG)by his grace as a gift, (EH)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God (EI)put forward as (EJ)a propitiation (EK)by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in (EL)his divine forbearance he had passed over (EM)former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

27 (EN)Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith (EO)apart from works of the law. 29 Or (EP)is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since (EQ)God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and (ER)the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.

Abraham Justified by Faith

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, (ES)our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but (ET)not before God. For what does the Scripture say? (EU)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now (EV)to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but (EW)believes in[o] him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

(EX)“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
    and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not (EY)count his sin.”

Is this blessing then only for (EZ)the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? (FA)For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. 10 How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. 11 (FB)He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was (FC)to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, 12 and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.

The Promise Realized Through Faith

13 For (FD)the promise to Abraham and his offspring (FE)that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 (FF)For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For (FG)the law brings wrath, but (FH)where there is no law (FI)there is no transgression.

16 That is why it depends on faith, (FJ)in order that the promise may rest on grace and (FK)be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, (FL)who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, (FM)“I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, (FN)who gives life to the dead and calls into existence (FO)the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, (FP)“So shall your offspring be.” 19 He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was (FQ)as good as dead ((FR)since he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered (FS)the barrenness[p] of Sarah's womb. 20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 21 fully convinced that (FT)God was able to do what he had promised. 22 That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” 23 But (FU)the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, 24 but for ours also. It will be counted to us (FV)who believe in (FW)him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, 25 (FX)who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised (FY)for our justification.

Peace with God Through Faith

(FZ)Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, (GA)we[q] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also (GB)obtained access by faith[r] into this grace (GC)in which we stand, and (GD)we[s] rejoice[t] in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we (GE)rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering (GF)produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and (GG)hope does not put us to shame, because God's love (GH)has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

For (GI)while we were still weak, at the right time (GJ)Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but (GK)God shows his love for us in that (GL)while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, (GM)we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from (GN)the wrath of God. 10 For if (GO)while we were enemies (GP)we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by (GQ)his life. 11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (GR)reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as (GS)sin came into the world through one man, and (GT)death through sin, and (GU)so death spread to all men[u] because (GV)all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but (GW)sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not (GX)like the transgression of Adam, (GY)who was a type of (GZ)the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for (HA)many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For (HB)the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought (HC)justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness (HD)reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass[v] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[w] leads to justification and life for (HE)all men. 19 For as by the one man's (HF)disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's (HG)obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now (HH)the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, (HI)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, (HJ)as sin reigned in death, (HK)grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (HL)Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can (HM)we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us (HN)who have been baptized (HO)into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were (HP)buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as (HQ)Christ was raised from the dead by (HR)the glory of the Father, we too might walk in (HS)newness of life.

For (HT)if we have been united with him in (HU)a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that (HV)our old self[x] (HW)was crucified with him in order that (HX)the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For (HY)one who has died (HZ)has been set free[y] from sin. Now (IA)if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that (IB)Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; (IC)death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, (ID)once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves (IE)dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

12 Let not (IF)sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 (IG)Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but (IH)present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For (II)sin (IJ)will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Slaves to Righteousness

15 What then? (IK)Are we to sin (IL)because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves (IM)to anyone as obedient slaves,[z] you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But (IN)thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the (IO)standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, (IP)having been set free from sin, (IQ)have become slaves of righteousness. 19 (IR)I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For (IS)just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members (IT)as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

20 (IU)For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 (IV)But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things (IW)of which you are now ashamed? (IX)For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you (IY)have been set free from sin and (IZ)have become slaves of God, (JA)the fruit you get leads to sanctification and (JB)its end, eternal life. 23 (JC)For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
