Introduction and Benediction

The Revelation of Jesus Christ, (A)which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must [a]shortly take place. And (B)He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, (C)who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things (D)that he saw. (E)Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for (F)the time is near.

Greeting the Seven Churches

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:

Grace to you and peace from Him (G)who is and (H)who was and who is to come, (I)and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, (J)the faithful (K)witness, the (L)firstborn from the dead, and (M)the ruler over the kings of the earth.

To Him (N)who [b]loved us (O)and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has (P)made us [c]kings and priests to His God and Father, (Q)to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Behold, He is coming with (R)clouds, and every eye will see Him, even (S)they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

(T)“I am the Alpha and the Omega, [d]the Beginning and the End,” says the [e]Lord, (U)“who is and who was and who is to come, the (V)Almighty.”

Vision of the Son of Man

I, John, [f]both your brother and (W)companion in the tribulation and (X)kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was on the island that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10 (Y)I was in the Spirit on (Z)the Lord’s Day, and I heard behind me (AA)a loud voice, as of a trumpet, 11 saying, [g]“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,” and, “What you see, write in a book and send it to the seven churches [h]which are in Asia: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”

12 Then I turned to see the voice that spoke with me. And having turned (AB)I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 (AC)and in the midst of the seven lampstands (AD)One like the Son of Man, (AE)clothed with a garment down to the feet and (AF)girded about the chest with a golden band. 14 His head and (AG)hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and (AH)His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 (AI)His feet were like fine brass, as if refined in a furnace, and (AJ)His voice as the sound of many waters; 16 (AK)He had in His right hand seven stars, (AL)out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, (AM)and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength. 17 And (AN)when I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. But (AO)He laid His right hand on me, saying [i]to me, “Do not be afraid; (AP)I am the First and the Last. 18 (AQ)I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, (AR)I am alive forevermore. Amen. And (AS)I have the keys of [j]Hades and of Death. 19 [k]Write the things which you have (AT)seen, (AU)and the things which are, (AV)and the things which will take place after this. 20 The [l]mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are (AW)the [m]angels of the seven churches, and (AX)the seven lampstands [n]which you saw are the seven churches.

The Loveless Church

“To the [o]angel of the church of Ephesus write,

‘These things says (AY)He who holds the seven stars in His right hand, (AZ)who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands: (BA)“I know your works, your labor, your [p]patience, and that you cannot [q]bear those who are evil. And (BB)you have tested those (BC)who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have (BD)not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, (BE)or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

(BF)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give (BG)to eat from (BH)the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.” ’

The Persecuted Church

“And to the [r]angel of the church in Smyrna write,

‘These things says (BI)the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life: “I know your works, tribulation, and poverty (but you are (BJ)rich); and I know the blasphemy of (BK)those who say they are Jews and are not, (BL)but are a [s]synagogue of Satan. 10 (BM)Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. (BN)Be faithful until death, and I will give you (BO)the crown of life.

11 (BP)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by (BQ)the second death.” ’

The Compromising Church

12 “And to the [t]angel of the church in Pergamos write,

‘These things says (BR)He who has the sharp two-edged sword: 13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of (BS)Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, (BT)to eat things sacrificed to idols, (BU)and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, [u]which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and (BV)will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.

17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden (BW)manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone (BX)a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” ’

The Corrupt Church

18 “And to the [v]angel of the church in Thyatira write,

‘These things says the Son of God, (BY)who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19 (BZ)“I know your works, love, [w]service, faith, and your [x]patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have [y]a few things against you, because you allow [z]that woman (CA)Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, [aa]to teach and seduce My servants (CB)to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time (CC)to [ab]repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. 22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of [ac]their deeds. 23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who (CD)searches[ad] the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

24 “Now to you I say, [ae]and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the (CE)depths of Satan, as they say, (CF)I [af]will put on you no other burden. 25 But hold fast (CG)what you have till I come. 26 And he who overcomes, and keeps (CH)My works until the end, (CI)to him I will give power over the nations—

27 ‘He(CJ) shall rule them with a rod of iron;
They shall be dashed to pieces like the potter’s vessels’—

as I also have received from My Father; 28 and I will give him (CK)the morning star.

29 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Dead Church

“And to the [ag]angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who (CL)has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before [ah]God. (CM)Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and (CN)repent. (CO)Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you (CP)as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. [ai]You have (CQ)a few names [aj]even in Sardis who have not (CR)defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me (CS)in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes (CT)shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not (CU)blot out his name from the (CV)Book of Life; but (CW)I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

(CX)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Faithful Church

“And to the [ak]angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

‘These things says (CY)He who is holy, (CZ)He who is true, (DA)“He who has the key of David, (DB)He who opens and no one shuts, and (DC)shuts and no one opens”: (DD)“I know your works. See, I have set before you (DE)an open door, [al]and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name. Indeed I will make (DF)those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—indeed (DG)I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you. 10 Because you have kept [am]My command to persevere, (DH)I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon (DI)the whole world, to test those who dwell (DJ)on the earth. 11 [an]Behold, (DK)I am coming quickly! (DL)Hold fast what you have, that no one may take (DM)your crown. 12 He who overcomes, I will make him (DN)a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall (DO)go out no more. (DP)I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the (DQ)New Jerusalem, which (DR)comes down out of heaven from My God. (DS)And I will write on him My new name.

13 (DT)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The Lukewarm Church

14 “And to the [ao]angel of the church [ap]of the Laodiceans write,

(DU)‘These things says the Amen, (DV)the Faithful and True Witness, (DW)the Beginning of the creation of God: 15 (DX)“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither [aq]cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. 17 Because you say, (DY)‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— 18 I counsel you (DZ)to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and (EA)white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19 (EB)As many as I love, I rebuke and (EC)chasten.[ar] Therefore be [as]zealous and repent. 20 Behold, (ED)I stand at the door and knock. (EE)If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, (EF)I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes (EG)I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.

22 (EH)“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’ ”

The Throne Room of Heaven(EI)

After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing (EJ)open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a (EK)trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.”

Immediately (EL)I was in the Spirit; and behold, (EM)a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. [at]And He who sat there was (EN)like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; (EO)and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. (EP)Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, (EQ)clothed in white [au]robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded (ER)lightnings, [av]thunderings, and voices. (ES)Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are (ET)the[aw] seven Spirits of God.

Before the throne there [ax]was (EU)a sea of glass, like crystal. (EV)And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. (EW)The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having (EX)six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

(EY)“Holy,[ay] holy, holy,
(EZ)Lord God Almighty,
(FA)Who was and is and is to come!”

Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, (FB)who lives forever and ever, 10 (FC)the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

11 “You(FD) are worthy, [az]O Lord,
To receive glory and honor and power;
(FE)For You created all things,
And by (FF)Your will they [ba]exist and were created.”

The Lamb Takes the Scroll

And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne (FG)a scroll written inside and on the back, (FH)sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, (FI)“Who is worthy to open the scroll and to loose its seals?” And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it.

So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open [bb]and read the scroll, or to look at it. But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, (FJ)the Lion of the tribe of (FK)Judah, (FL)the Root of David, has (FM)prevailed to open the scroll (FN)and [bc]to loose its seven seals.”

And I looked, [bd]and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood (FO)a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and (FP)seven eyes, which are (FQ)the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came and took the scroll out of the right hand (FR)of Him who sat on the throne.

Worthy Is the Lamb

Now when He had taken the scroll, (FS)the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the (FT)prayers of the saints. And (FU)they sang a new song, saying:

(FV)“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And (FW)have redeemed us to God (FX)by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
10 And have made [be]us (FY)kings[bf] and (FZ)priests to our God;
And [bg]we shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice:

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive power and riches and wisdom,
And strength and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And (GA)every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

(GB)“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him (GC)who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and [bh]ever!”

14 Then the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the [bi]twenty-four elders fell down and worshiped [bj]Him who lives forever and ever.

First Seal: The Conqueror

Now (GD)I saw when the Lamb opened one of the [bk]seals; and I heard (GE)one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” And I looked, and behold, (GF)a white horse. (GG)He who sat on it had a bow; (GH)and a crown was given to him, and he went out (GI)conquering and to conquer.

Second Seal: Conflict on Earth

When He opened the second seal, (GJ)I heard the second living creature saying, “Come [bl]and see.” (GK)Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to (GL)take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword.

Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth

When He opened the third seal, (GM)I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, (GN)a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of (GO)scales[bm] in his hand. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A [bn]quart of wheat for a [bo]denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and (GP)do not harm the oil and the wine.”

Fourth Seal: Widespread Death on Earth

When He opened the fourth seal, (GQ)I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” (GR)So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And [bp]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (GS)to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, (GT)and by the beasts of the earth.

Fifth Seal: The Cry of the Martyrs

When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under (GU)the altar (GV)the souls of those who had been slain (GW)for the word of God and for (GX)the testimony which they held. 10 And they cried with a loud voice, saying, (GY)“How long, O Lord, (GZ)holy and true, (HA)until You judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then a (HB)white robe was given to each of them; and it was said to them (HC)that they should rest a little while longer, until both the number of their fellow servants and their brethren, who would be killed as they were, was completed.

Sixth Seal: Cosmic Disturbances

12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, (HD)and [bq]behold, there was a great earthquake; and (HE)the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the [br]moon became like blood. 13 (HF)And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. 14 (HG)Then the sky [bs]receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and (HH)every mountain and island was moved out of its place. 15 And the (HI)kings of the earth, the great men, [bt]the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, (HJ)hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, 16 (HK)and said to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who (HL)sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of His wrath has come, (HM)and who is able to stand?”

The Sealed of Israel

After these things I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, (HN)holding the four winds of the earth, (HO)that the wind should not blow on the earth, on the sea, or on any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God. And he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, (HP)“Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God (HQ)on their foreheads.” (HR)And I heard the number of those who were sealed. (HS)One hundred and forty-four thousand (HT)of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed:

of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were [bu]sealed;
of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed;
of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed.

A Multitude from the Great Tribulation

After these things I looked, and behold, (HU)a great multitude which no one could number, (HV)of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (HW)clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, (HX)“Salvation belongs to our God (HY)who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 (HZ)All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and (IA)worshiped God, 12 (IB)saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom,
Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever.
Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “Who are these arrayed in (IC)white robes, and where did they come from?”

14 And I said to him, [bv]“Sir, you know.”

So he said to me, (ID)“These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and (IE)washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will (IF)dwell among them. 16 (IG)They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; (IH)the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; 17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne (II)will shepherd them and lead them to [bw]living fountains of waters. (IJ)And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Seventh Seal: Prelude to the Seven Trumpets

When(IK) He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. (IL)And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, (IM)and to them were given seven trumpets. Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with (IN)the prayers of all the saints upon (IO)the golden altar which was before the throne. And (IP)the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And (IQ)there were noises, thunderings, (IR)lightnings, (IS)and an earthquake.

So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

First Trumpet: Vegetation Struck

The first angel sounded: (IT)And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown (IU)to the [bx]earth. And a third (IV)of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.

Second Trumpet: The Seas Struck

Then the second angel sounded: (IW)And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, (IX)and a third of the sea (IY)became blood. (IZ)And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

Third Trumpet: The Waters Struck

10 Then the third angel sounded: (JA)And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, (JB)and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11 (JC)The name of the star is Wormwood. (JD)A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.

Fourth Trumpet: The Heavens Struck

12 (JE)Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day [by]did not shine, and likewise the night.

13 And I looked, (JF)and I heard an [bz]angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, (JG)“Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

Fifth Trumpet: The Locusts from the Bottomless Pit

Then the fifth angel sounded: (JH)And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to (JI)the [ca]bottomless pit. And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the (JJ)sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, (JK)as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were commanded (JL)not to harm (JM)the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have (JN)the seal of God on their foreheads. And [cb]they were not given authority to kill them, (JO)but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. In those days (JP)men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.

(JQ)The shape of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. (JR)On their heads were crowns of something like gold, (JS)and their faces were like the faces of men. They had hair like women’s hair, and (JT)their teeth were like lions’ teeth. And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was (JU)like the sound of chariots with many horses running into battle. 10 They had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails. Their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had as king over them (JV)the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is [cc]Abaddon, but in Greek he has the name [cd]Apollyon.

12 (JW)One woe is past. Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things.

Sixth Trumpet: The Angels from the Euphrates

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the (JX)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound (JY)at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a (JZ)third of mankind. 16 Now (KA)the number of the army (KB)of the horsemen was two hundred million; (KC)I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; (KD)and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For [ce]their power is in their mouth and in their tails; (KE)for their tails are like serpents, having heads; and with them they do harm.

20 But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (KF)did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship (KG)demons, (KH)and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. 21 And they did not repent of their murders (KI)or their [cf]sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Mighty Angel with the Little Book

10 I saw still another mighty angel coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. (KJ)And a rainbow was on (KK)his head, his face was like the sun, and (KL)his feet like pillars of fire. He had a little book open in his hand. (KM)And he set his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, and cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roars. When he cried out, (KN)seven thunders uttered their voices. Now when the seven thunders [cg]uttered their voices, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven saying [ch]to me, (KO)“Seal up the things which the seven thunders uttered, and do not write them.”

The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (KP)raised up his [ci]hand to heaven and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, (KQ)who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, (KR)that there should be delay no longer, but (KS)in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets.

John Eats the Little Book

Then the voice which I heard from heaven spoke to me again and said, “Go, take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel who stands on the sea and on the earth.”

So I went to the angel and said to him, “Give me the little book.”

And he said to me, (KT)“Take and eat it; and it will make your stomach bitter, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

10 Then I took the little book out of the angel’s hand and ate it, (KU)and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. But when I had eaten it, (KV)my stomach became bitter. 11 And [cj]he said to me, “You must prophesy again about many peoples, nations, tongues, and kings.”

The Two Witnesses

11 Then I was given (KW)a reed like a measuring rod. [ck]And the angel stood, saying, (KX)“Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there. But leave out (KY)the court which is outside the temple, and do not measure it, (KZ)for it has been given to the Gentiles. And they will (LA)tread the holy city underfoot for (LB)forty-two months. And I will give power to my two (LC)witnesses, (LD)and they will prophesy (LE)one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

These are the (LF)two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the [cl]God of the earth. And if anyone wants to harm them, (LG)fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. (LH)And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. These (LI)have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.

The Witnesses Killed

When they (LJ)finish their testimony, (LK)the beast that ascends (LL)out of the bottomless pit (LM)will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of (LN)the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, (LO)where also [cm]our Lord was crucified. (LP)Then those from the peoples, tribes, tongues, and nations [cn]will see their dead bodies three-and-a-half days, (LQ)and not allow their dead bodies to be put into graves. 10 (LR)And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, (LS)and send gifts to one another, (LT)because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.

The Witnesses Resurrected

11 (LU)Now after the three-and-a-half days (LV)the breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them. 12 And [co]they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” (LW)And they ascended to heaven (LX)in a cloud, (LY)and their enemies saw them. 13 In the same hour (LZ)there was a great earthquake, (MA)and a tenth of the city fell. In the earthquake seven thousand people were killed, and the rest were afraid (MB)and gave glory to the God of heaven.

14 (MC)The second woe is past. Behold, the third woe is coming quickly.

Seventh Trumpet: The Kingdom Proclaimed

15 Then (MD)the seventh angel sounded: (ME)And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, (MF)“The [cp]kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, (MG)and He shall reign forever and ever!” 16 And (MH)the twenty-four elders who sat before God on their thrones fell on their faces and (MI)worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give You thanks, O Lord God Almighty,
The One (MJ)who is and who was [cq]and who is to come,
Because You have taken Your great power (MK)and reigned.
18 The nations were (ML)angry, and Your [cr]wrath has come,
And the time of the (MM)dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then (MN)the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of [cs]His covenant was seen in His temple. And (MO)there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, (MP)and great hail.

The Woman, the Child, and the Dragon

12 Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out (MQ)in labor and in pain to give birth.

And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, (MR)a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. (MS)His tail drew a third (MT)of the stars of heaven (MU)and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood (MV)before the woman who was ready to give birth, (MW)to devour her Child as soon as it was born. She bore a male Child (MX)who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was (MY)caught up to God and His throne. Then (MZ)the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there (NA)one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

Satan Thrown Out of Heaven

And war broke out in heaven: (NB)Michael and his angels fought (NC)with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they [ct]did not prevail, nor was a place found for [cu]them in heaven any longer. So (ND)the great dragon was cast out, (NE)that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, (NF)who deceives the whole world; (NG)he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, (NH)“Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, (NI)who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 And (NJ)they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, (NK)and they did not love their lives to the death. 12 Therefore (NL)rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! (NM)Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, (NN)because he knows that he has a short time.”

The Woman Persecuted

13 Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted (NO)the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 (NP)But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, (NQ)that she might fly (NR)into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished (NS)for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 So the serpent (NT)spewed water out of his mouth like a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away by the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring, who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus [cv]Christ.

The Beast from the Sea

13 Then [cw]I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw (NU)a beast rising up out of the sea, (NV)having [cx]seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns, and on his heads a (NW)blasphemous name. Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The (NX)dragon gave him his power, his throne, and great authority. And I saw one of his heads (NY)as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And (NZ)all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, (OA)“Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”

And he was given (OB)a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to [cy]continue for (OC)forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, (OD)His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to him (OE)to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And (OF)authority was given him over every [cz]tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, (OG)whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain (OH)from the foundation of the world.

(OI)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 (OJ)He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; (OK)he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. (OL)Here is the [da]patience and the faith of the saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then I saw another beast (OM)coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. 12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, (ON)whose deadly wound was healed. 13 (OO)He performs great signs, (OP)so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 (OQ)And he deceives [db]those who dwell on the earth (OR)by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword (OS)and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak (OT)and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, (OU)to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has [dc]the mark or (OV)the name of the beast, (OW)or the number of his name.

18 (OX)Here is wisdom. Let him who has (OY)understanding calculate (OZ)the number of the beast, (PA)for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and behold, [dd]a (PB)Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him (PC)one hundred and forty-four thousand, [de]having His Father’s name (PD)written on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, (PE)like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of (PF)harpists playing their harps. They sang as it were a new song before the throne, before the four living creatures, and the elders; and no one could learn that song (PG)except the hundred and forty-four thousand who were redeemed from the earth. These are the ones who were not defiled with women, (PH)for they are virgins. These are the ones (PI)who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These (PJ)were [df]redeemed from among men, (PK)being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb. And (PL)in their mouth was found no [dg]deceit, for (PM)they are without fault [dh]before the throne of God.

The Proclamations of Three Angels

Then I saw another angel (PN)flying in the midst of heaven, (PO)having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—(PP)to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— saying with a loud voice, (PQ)“Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; (PR)and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.”

And another angel followed, saying, (PS)“Babylon[di] is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because (PT)she has made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.”

Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, (PU)“If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his (PV)mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself (PW)shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is (PX)poured out full strength into (PY)the cup of His indignation. (PZ)He shall be tormented with (QA)fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And (QB)the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

12 (QC)Here is the [dj]patience of the saints; (QD)here[dk] are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven saying [dl]to me, “Write: (QE)‘Blessed are the dead (QF)who die in the Lord from now on.’ ”

“Yes,” says the Spirit, (QG)“that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow (QH)them.”

Reaping the Earth’s Harvest

14 Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, having on His head a golden crown, and in His hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel (QI)came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, (QJ)“Thrust in Your sickle and reap, for the time has come [dm]for You to reap, for the harvest (QK)of the earth is ripe.” 16 So He who sat on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

Reaping the Grapes of Wrath

17 Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.

18 And another angel came out from the altar, (QL)who had power over fire, and he cried with a loud cry to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, (QM)“Thrust in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth, for her grapes are fully ripe.” 19 So the angel thrust his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth, and threw it into (QN)the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And (QO)the winepress was trampled (QP)outside the city, and blood came out of the winepress, (QQ)up to the horses’ bridles, for one thousand six hundred [dn]furlongs.

Prelude to the Bowl Judgments

15 Then (QR)I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvelous: (QS)seven angels having the seven last plagues, (QT)for in them the wrath of God is complete.

And I saw something like (QU)a sea of glass (QV)mingled with fire, and those who have the victory over the beast, (QW)over his image and [do]over his mark and over the (QX)number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, (QY)having harps of God. They sing (QZ)the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the (RA)Lamb, saying:

(RB)“Great and marvelous are Your works,
Lord God Almighty!
(RC)Just and true are Your ways,
O King of the [dp]saints!
(RD)Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are (RE)holy.
For (RF)all nations shall come and worship before You,
For Your judgments have been manifested.”

After these things I looked, and [dq]behold, (RG)the [dr]temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened. And out of the [ds]temple came the seven angels having the seven plagues, (RH)clothed in pure bright linen, and having their chests girded with golden bands. (RI)Then one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden bowls full of the wrath of God (RJ)who lives forever and ever. (RK)The temple was filled with smoke (RL)from the glory of God and from His power, and no one was able to enter the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were completed.

The Seven Bowls

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying (RM)to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the [dt]bowls (RN)of the wrath of God on the earth.”

First Bowl: Loathsome Sores

So the first went and poured out his bowl (RO)upon the earth, and a [du]foul and (RP)loathsome sore came upon the men (RQ)who had the mark of the beast and those (RR)who worshiped his image.

Second Bowl: The Sea Turns to Blood

Then the second angel poured out his bowl (RS)on the sea, and (RT)it became blood as of a dead man; (RU)and every living creature in the sea died.

Third Bowl: The Waters Turn to Blood

Then the third angel poured out his bowl (RV)on the rivers and springs of water, (RW)and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying:

(RX)“You are righteous, [dv]O Lord,
The One (RY)who is and who [dw]was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
For (RZ)they have shed the blood (SA)of saints and prophets,
(SB)And You have given them blood to drink.
[dx]For it is their just due.”

And I heard [dy]another from the altar saying, “Even so, (SC)Lord God Almighty, (SD)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

Fourth Bowl: Men Are Scorched

Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl (SE)on the sun, (SF)and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and they (SG)blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; (SH)and they did not repent (SI)and give Him glory.

Fifth Bowl: Darkness and Pain

10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl (SJ)on the throne of the beast, (SK)and his kingdom became full of darkness; (SL)and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.

Sixth Bowl: Euphrates Dried Up

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl (SM)on the great river Euphrates, (SN)and its water was dried up, (SO)so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean (SP)spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of (SQ)the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of (SR)the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, (SS)performing signs, which go out to the kings [dz]of the earth and of (ST)the whole world, to gather them to (SU)the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

15 (SV)“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, (SW)lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

16 (SX)And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, [ea]Armageddon.

Seventh Bowl: The Earth Utterly Shaken

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, (SY)“It is done!” 18 And (SZ)there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; (TA)and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake (TB)as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now (TC)the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And (TD)great Babylon (TE)was remembered before God, (TF)to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then (TG)every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.

The Scarlet Woman and the Scarlet Beast

17 Then (TH)one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying [eb]to me, “Come, (TI)I will show you the judgment of (TJ)the great harlot (TK)who sits on many waters, (TL)with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and (TM)the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.”

So he carried me away in the Spirit (TN)into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting (TO)on a scarlet beast which was full of (TP)names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. The woman (TQ)was arrayed in purple and scarlet, (TR)and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, (TS)having in her hand a golden cup (TT)full of abominations and the filthiness of [ec]her fornication. And on her forehead a name was written:

(TU)MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,
THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS
OF THE EARTH.

I saw (TV)the woman, drunk (TW)with the blood of the saints and with the blood of (TX)the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.

The Meaning of the Woman and the Beast

But the angel said to me, “Why did you marvel? I will tell you the [ed]mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns. The beast that you saw was, and is not, and (TY)will ascend out of the bottomless pit and (TZ)go to [ee]perdition. And those who (UA)dwell on the earth (UB)will marvel, (UC)whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and [ef]yet is.

(UD)“Here is the mind which has wisdom: (UE)The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits. 10 There are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come. And when he comes, he must (UF)continue a short time. 11 The (UG)beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven, and is going to [eg]perdition.

12 (UH)“The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 (UI)These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will (UJ)overcome them, (UK)for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; (UL)and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.”

15 Then he said to me, (UM)“The waters which you saw, where the harlot sits, (UN)are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues. 16 And the ten horns which you [eh]saw on the beast, (UO)these will hate the harlot, make her (UP)desolate (UQ)and naked, eat her flesh and (UR)burn her with fire. 17 (US)For God has put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast, (UT)until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman whom you saw (UU)is that great city (UV)which reigns over the kings of the earth.”

The Fall of Babylon the Great

18 After(UW) these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, (UX)and the earth was illuminated with his glory. And he cried [ei]mightily with a loud voice, saying, (UY)“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and (UZ)has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and (VA)a cage for every unclean and hated bird! For all the nations (VB)have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, (VC)and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the [ej]abundance of her luxury.”

And I heard another voice from heaven saying, (VD)“Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. (VE)For her sins [ek]have reached to heaven, and (VF)God has remembered her iniquities. (VG)Render to her just as she rendered [el]to you, and repay her double according to her works; (VH)in the cup which she has mixed, (VI)mix double for her. (VJ)In the measure that she glorified herself and lived [em]luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as (VK)queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’ Therefore her plagues will come (VL)in one day—death and mourning and famine. And (VM)she will be utterly burned with fire, (VN)for strong is the Lord God who [en]judges her.

The World Mourns Babylon’s Fall

(VO)“The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her (VP)will weep and lament for her, (VQ)when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, (VR)‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! (VS)For in one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And (VT)the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 (VU)merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and (VV)souls of men. 14 The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things which are rich and splendid have [eo]gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, 16 and saying, ‘Alas, alas, (VW)that great city (VX)that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! 17 (VY)For in one hour such great riches [ep]came to nothing.’ (VZ)Every shipmaster, all who travel by ship, sailors, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance 18 (WA)and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, (WB)‘What is like this great city?’

19 (WC)“They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying, ‘Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich by her wealth! (WD)For in one hour she [eq]is made desolate.’

20 (WE)“Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you [er]holy apostles and prophets, for (WF)God has avenged you on her!”

Finality of Babylon’s Fall

21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, (WG)“Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and (WH)shall not be found anymore. 22 (WI)The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore. 23 (WJ)The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, (WK)and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For (WL)your merchants were the great men of the earth, (WM)for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. 24 And (WN)in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who (WO)were slain on the earth.”

Heaven Exults over Babylon

19 After these things (WP)I [es]heard a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Alleluia! (WQ)Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to [et]the Lord our God! For (WR)true and righteous are His judgments, because He has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication; and He (WS)has avenged on her the blood of His servants shed by her.” Again they said, “Alleluia! (WT)Her smoke rises up forever and ever!” And (WU)the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who sat on the throne, saying, (WV)“Amen! Alleluia!” Then a voice came from the throne, saying, (WW)“Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, (WX)both[eu] small and great!”

(WY)And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For (WZ)the[ev] Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for (XA)the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And (XB)to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, (XC)for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

Then he said to me, “Write: (XD)‘Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he said to me, (XE)“These are the true sayings of God.” 10 And (XF)I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, (XG)“See that you do not do that! I am your (XH)fellow servant, and of your brethren (XI)who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the (XJ)testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Christ on a White Horse

11 (XK)Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, (XL)a white horse. And He who sat on him was called (XM)Faithful and True, and (XN)in righteousness He judges and makes war. 12 (XO)His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. (XP)He [ew]had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 (XQ)He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called (XR)The Word of God. 14 (XS)And the armies in heaven, (XT)clothed in [ex]fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now (XU)out of His mouth goes a [ey]sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And (XV)He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. (XW)He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And (XX)He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written:

(XY)KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.

The Beast and His Armies Defeated

17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, (XZ)“Come and gather together for the [ez]supper of the great God, 18 (YA)that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, [fa]free and slave, both small and great.”

19 (YB)And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army. 20 (YC)Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and (YD)those who worshiped his image. (YE)These two were cast alive into the lake of fire (YF)burning with brimstone. 21 And the rest (YG)were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. (YH)And all the birds (YI)were filled with their flesh.

Satan Bound 1,000 Years

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, (YJ)having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of (YK)the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and (YL)set a seal on him, (YM)so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

The Saints Reign with Christ 1,000 Years

And I saw (YN)thrones, and they sat on them, and (YO)judgment was committed to them. Then I saw (YP)the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, (YQ)who had not worshiped the beast (YR)or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they (YS)lived and (YT)reigned with Christ for [fb]a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such (YU)the second death has no power, but they shall be (YV)priests of God and of Christ, (YW)and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

Satanic Rebellion Crushed(YX)

Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out (YY)to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, (YZ)Gog and Magog, (ZA)to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. (ZB)They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone (ZC)where[fc] the beast and the false prophet are. And they (ZD)will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The Great White Throne Judgment

11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face (ZE)the earth and the heaven fled away. (ZF)And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, (ZG)small and great, standing before [fd]God, (ZH)and books were opened. And another (ZI)book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged (ZJ)according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, (ZK)and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. (ZL)And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then (ZM)Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. (ZN)This is the second [fe]death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life (ZO)was cast into the lake of fire.

All Things Made New

21 Now (ZP)I saw a new heaven and a new earth, (ZQ)for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, [ff]John, saw (ZR)the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared (ZS)as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, (ZT)the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. (ZU)And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; (ZV)there shall be no more death, (ZW)nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

Then (ZX)He who sat on the throne said, (ZY)“Behold, I make all things new.” And He said [fg]to me, “Write, for (ZZ)these words are true and faithful.”

And He said to me, (AAA)“It[fh] is done! (AAB)I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. (AAC)I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes [fi]shall inherit all things, and (AAD)I will be his God and he shall be My son. (AAE)But the cowardly, [fj]unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in (AAF)the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”

The New Jerusalem(AAG)

Then one of (AAH)the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came [fk]to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you (AAI)the [fl]bride, the Lamb’s wife.” 10 And he carried me away (AAJ)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me (AAK)the [fm]great city, the [fn]holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 (AAL)having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 12 Also she had a great and high wall with (AAM)twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 (AAN)three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.

14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and (AAO)on them were the [fo]names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he who talked with me (AAP)had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand [fp]furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. 17 Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 (AAQ)The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve (AAR)pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. (AAS)And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

The Glory of the New Jerusalem

22 (AAT)But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 (AAU)The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine [fq]in it, for the [fr]glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 (AAV)And the nations [fs]of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor [ft]into it. 25 (AAW)Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (AAX)(there shall be no night there). 26 (AAY)And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into [fu]it. 27 But (AAZ)there shall by no means enter it anything [fv]that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s (ABA)Book of Life.

Prologue

The revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave(A) him to show his servants what must soon take place.(B) He made it known by sending his angel(C) to his servant John,(D) who testifies to everything he saw—that is, the word of God(E) and the testimony of Jesus Christ.(F) Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it,(G) because the time is near.(H)

Greetings and Doxology

John,

To the seven churches(I) in the province of Asia:

Grace and peace to you(J) from him who is, and who was, and who is to come,(K) and from the seven spirits[a](L) before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness,(M) the firstborn from the dead,(N) and the ruler of the kings of the earth.(O)

To him who loves us(P) and has freed us from our sins by his blood,(Q) and has made us to be a kingdom and priests(R) to serve his God and Father(S)—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.(T)

“Look, he is coming with the clouds,”[b](U)
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;(V)
and all peoples on earth “will mourn(W) because of him.”[c]
So shall it be! Amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,”(X) says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come,(Y) the Almighty.”(Z)

John’s Vision of Christ

I, John,(AA) your brother and companion in the suffering(AB) and kingdom(AC) and patient endurance(AD) that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God(AE) and the testimony of Jesus.(AF) 10 On the Lord’s Day(AG) I was in the Spirit,(AH) and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,(AI) 11 which said: “Write on a scroll what you see(AJ) and send it to the seven churches:(AK) to Ephesus,(AL) Smyrna,(AM) Pergamum,(AN) Thyatira,(AO) Sardis,(AP) Philadelphia(AQ) and Laodicea.”(AR)

12 I turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands,(AS) 13 and among the lampstands(AT) was someone like a son of man,[d](AU) dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet(AV) and with a golden sash around his chest.(AW) 14 The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.(AX) 15 His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace,(AY) and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters.(AZ) 16 In his right hand he held seven stars,(BA) and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword.(BB) His face was like the sun(BC) shining in all its brilliance.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet(BD) as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me(BE) and said: “Do not be afraid.(BF) I am the First and the Last.(BG) 18 I am the Living One; I was dead,(BH) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!(BI) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.(BJ)

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen,(BK) what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand(BL) and of the seven golden lampstands(BM) is this: The seven stars are the angels[e] of the seven churches,(BN) and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.(BO)

To the Church in Ephesus

“To the angel[f] of the church in Ephesus(BP) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand(BQ) and walks among the seven golden lampstands.(BR) I know your deeds,(BS) your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested(BT) those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.(BU) You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name,(BV) and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.(BW) Consider how far you have fallen! Repent(BX) and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand(BY) from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,(BZ) which I also hate.

Whoever has ears, let them hear(CA) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(CB) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,(CC) which is in the paradise(CD) of God.

To the Church in Smyrna

“To the angel of the church in Smyrna(CE) write:

These are the words of him who is the First and the Last,(CF) who died and came to life again.(CG) I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich!(CH) I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not,(CI) but are a synagogue of Satan.(CJ) 10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you,(CK) and you will suffer persecution for ten days.(CL) Be faithful,(CM) even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.(CN)

11 Whoever has ears, let them hear(CO) what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.(CP)

To the Church in Pergamum

12 “To the angel of the church in Pergamum(CQ) write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword.(CR) 13 I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me,(CS) not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness,(CT) who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.(CU)

14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you:(CV) There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam,(CW) who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols(CX) and committed sexual immorality.(CY) 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.(CZ) 16 Repent(DA) therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.(DB)

17 Whoever has ears, let them hear(DC) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(DD) I will give some of the hidden manna.(DE) I will also give that person a white stone with a new name(DF) written on it, known only to the one who receives it.(DG)

To the Church in Thyatira

18 “To the angel of the church in Thyatira(DH) write:

These are the words of the Son of God,(DI) whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.(DJ) 19 I know your deeds,(DK) your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

20 Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel,(DL) who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.(DM) 21 I have given her time(DN) to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling.(DO) 22 So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery(DP) with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. 23 I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds,(DQ) and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.(DR)

24 Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you,(DS) 25 except to hold on to what you have(DT) until I come.’(DU)

26 To the one who is victorious(DV) and does my will to the end,(DW) I will give authority over the nations(DX) 27 that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter(DY) and will dash them to pieces like pottery’[g](DZ)—just as I have received authority from my Father. 28 I will also give that one the morning star.(EA) 29 Whoever has ears, let them hear(EB) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Sardis

“To the angel[h] of the church in Sardis(EC) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[i](ED) of God and the seven stars.(EE) I know your deeds;(EF) you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.(EG) Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent.(EH) But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief,(EI) and you will not know at what time(EJ) I will come to you.

Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes.(EK) They will walk with me, dressed in white,(EL) for they are worthy. The one who is victorious(EM) will, like them, be dressed in white.(EN) I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life,(EO) but will acknowledge that name before my Father(EP) and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear(EQ) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Philadelphia

“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia(ER) write:

These are the words of him who is holy(ES) and true,(ET) who holds the key of David.(EU) What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I know your deeds.(EV) See, I have placed before you an open door(EW) that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.(EX) I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan,(EY) who claim to be Jews though they are not,(EZ) but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet(FA) and acknowledge that I have loved you.(FB) 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you(FC) from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world(FD) to test(FE) the inhabitants of the earth.(FF)

11 I am coming soon.(FG) Hold on to what you have,(FH) so that no one will take your crown.(FI) 12 The one who is victorious(FJ) I will make a pillar(FK) in the temple of my God. Never again will they leave it. I will write on them the name of my God(FL) and the name of the city of my God,(FM) the new Jerusalem,(FN) which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on them my new name. 13 Whoever has ears, let them hear(FO) what the Spirit says to the churches.

To the Church in Laodicea

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea(FP) write:

These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness,(FQ) the ruler of God’s creation.(FR) 15 I know your deeds,(FS) that you are neither cold nor hot.(FT) I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’(FU) But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.(FV) 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire,(FW) so you can become rich; and white clothes(FX) to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness;(FY) and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(FZ) So be earnest and repent.(GA) 20 Here I am! I stand at the door(GB) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,(GC) I will come in(GD) and eat with that person, and they with me.

21 To the one who is victorious,(GE) I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,(GF) just as I was victorious(GG) and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear(GH) what the Spirit says to the churches.”

The Throne in Heaven

After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open(GI) in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet(GJ) said, “Come up here,(GK) and I will show you what must take place after this.”(GL) At once I was in the Spirit,(GM) and there before me was a throne in heaven(GN) with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper(GO) and ruby.(GP) A rainbow(GQ) that shone like an emerald(GR) encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders.(GS) They were dressed in white(GT) and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder.(GU) In front of the throne, seven lamps(GV) were blazing. These are the seven spirits[j](GW) of God. Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass,(GX) clear as crystal.

In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures,(GY) and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.(GZ) The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.(HA) Each of the four living creatures(HB) had six wings(HC) and was covered with eyes all around,(HD) even under its wings. Day and night(HE) they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[k](HF)

who was, and is, and is to come.”(HG)

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne(HH) and who lives for ever and ever,(HI) 10 the twenty-four elders(HJ) fall down before him(HK) who sits on the throne(HL) and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,(HM)
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”(HN)

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne(HO) a scroll with writing on both sides(HP) and sealed(HQ) with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel(HR) proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion(HS) of the tribe of Judah,(HT) the Root of David,(HU) has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Then I saw a Lamb,(HV) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(HW) and the elders.(HX) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(HY) which are the seven spirits[l](HZ) of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(IA) And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(IB) and the twenty-four elders(IC) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(ID) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(IE) of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:(IF)

“You are worthy(IG) to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(IH) you purchased(II) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(IJ)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(IK) to serve our God,
and they will reign[m] on the earth.”(IL)

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(IM) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(IN) and the elders.(IO) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb,(IP) who was slain,(IQ)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(IR)

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(IS) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne(IT) and to the Lamb(IU)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(IV)

14 The four living creatures(IW) said, “Amen,”(IX) and the elders(IY) fell down and worshiped.(IZ)

The Seals

I watched as the Lamb(JA) opened the first of the seven seals.(JB) Then I heard one of the four living creatures(JC) say in a voice like thunder,(JD) “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(JE) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(JF) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(JG)

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(JH) say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(JI) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(JJ) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(JK) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(JL) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(JM) saying, “Two pounds[n] of wheat for a day’s wages,[o] and six pounds[p] of barley for a day’s wages,[q](JN) and do not damage(JO) the oil and the wine!”

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(JP) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(JQ) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(JR) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(JS)

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(JT) the altar(JU) the souls of those who had been slain(JV) because of the word of God(JW) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(JX) Sovereign Lord,(JY) holy and true,(JZ) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(KA) and avenge our blood?”(KB) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(KC) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[r] were killed just as they had been.(KD)

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.(KE) The sun turned black(KF) like sackcloth(KG) made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth,(KH) as figs drop from a fig tree(KI) when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,(KJ) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.(KK)

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,(KL) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.(KM) 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us(KN) and hide us[s] from the face of him who sits on the throne(KO) and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day(KP) of their[t] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”(KQ)

144,000 Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners(KR) of the earth, holding back the four winds(KS) of the earth to prevent(KT) any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal(KU) of the living God.(KV) He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:(KW) “Do not harm(KX) the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads(KY) of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number(KZ) of those who were sealed: 144,000(LA) from all the tribes of Israel.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

from the tribe of Asher 12,000,

from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,

from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,

from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,

from the tribe of Levi 12,000,

from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,

from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,

from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

The Great Multitude in White Robes

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,(LB) standing before the throne(LC) and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes(LD) and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,(LE)
who sits on the throne,(LF)
and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders(LG) and the four living creatures.(LH) They fell down on their faces(LI) before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”(LJ)

13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes(LK)—who are they, and where did they come from?”

14 I answered, “Sir, you know.”

And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes(LL) and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.(LM) 15 Therefore,

“they are before the throne of God(LN)
and serve him(LO) day and night in his temple;(LP)
and he who sits on the throne(LQ)
will shelter them with his presence.(LR)
16 ‘Never again will they hunger;
    never again will they thirst.(LS)
The sun will not beat down on them,’[u]
    nor any scorching heat.(LT)
17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne
    will be their shepherd;(LU)
‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’[v](LV)
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’[w](LW)

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(LX) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(LY) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(LZ)

Another angel,(MA) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(MB) on the golden altar(MC) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(MD) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(ME) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(MF) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(MG)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(MH) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(MI) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(MJ) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(MK) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(ML)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(MM) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(MN) of the sea turned into blood,(MO) a third(MP) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(MQ) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(MR) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[x] A third(MS) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(MT)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(MU) of them turned dark.(MV) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(MW)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(MX) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(MY) to the inhabitants of the earth,(MZ) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(NA) The star was given the key(NB) to the shaft of the Abyss.(NC) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(ND) The sun and sky were darkened(NE) by the smoke from the Abyss.(NF) And out of the smoke locusts(NG) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(NH) of the earth. They were told not to harm(NI) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(NJ) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(NK) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(NL) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(NM) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(NN)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(NO) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(NP) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(NQ) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(NR) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(NS) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(NT) whose name in Hebrew(NU) is Abaddon(NV) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(NW)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(NX) of the golden altar that is before God.(NY) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(NZ) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(OA) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(OB) to kill a third(OC) of mankind.(OD) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(OE)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(OF) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(OG) 18 A third(OH) of mankind was killed(OI) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(OJ) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(OK) of the work of their hands;(OL) they did not stop worshiping demons,(OM) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(ON) 21 Nor did they repent(OO) of their murders, their magic arts,(OP) their sexual immorality(OQ) or their thefts.

The Angel and the Little Scroll

10 Then I saw another mighty angel(OR) coming down from heaven.(OS) He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow(OT) above his head; his face was like the sun,(OU) and his legs were like fiery pillars.(OV) He was holding a little scroll,(OW) which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land,(OX) and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion.(OY) When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders(OZ) spoke. And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write;(PA) but I heard a voice from heaven(PB) say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”(PC)

Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land(PD) raised his right hand to heaven.(PE) And he swore(PF) by him who lives for ever and ever,(PG) who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it,(PH) and said, “There will be no more delay!(PI) But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet,(PJ) the mystery(PK) of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”(PL)

Then the voice that I had heard from heaven(PM) spoke to me once more: “Go, take the scroll(PN) that lies open in the hand of the angel who is standing on the sea and on the land.”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take it and eat it. It will turn your stomach sour, but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’[y](PO) 10 I took the little scroll from the angel’s hand and ate it. It tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth,(PP) but when I had eaten it, my stomach turned sour. 11 Then I was told, “You must prophesy(PQ) again about many peoples, nations, languages and kings.”(PR)

The Two Witnesses

11 I was given a reed like a measuring rod(PS) and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. But exclude the outer court;(PT) do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.(PU) They will trample on the holy city(PV) for 42 months.(PW) And I will appoint my two witnesses,(PX) and they will prophesy for 1,260 days,(PY) clothed in sackcloth.”(PZ) They are “the two olive trees”(QA) and the two lampstands, and “they stand before the Lord of the earth.”[z](QB) If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies.(QC) This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.(QD) They have power to shut up the heavens(QE) so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying;(QF) and they have power to turn the waters into blood(QG) and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast(QH) that comes up from the Abyss(QI) will attack them,(QJ) and overpower and kill them. Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city(QK)—which is figuratively called Sodom(QL) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.(QM) For three and a half days some from every people, tribe, language and nation(QN) will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial.(QO) 10 The inhabitants of the earth(QP) will gloat over them and will celebrate by sending each other gifts,(QQ) because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.

11 But after the three and a half days(QR) the breath[aa] of life from God entered them,(QS) and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.”(QT) And they went up to heaven in a cloud,(QU) while their enemies looked on.

13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake(QV) and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory(QW) to the God of heaven.(QX)

14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon.(QY)

The Seventh Trumpet

15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet,(QZ) and there were loud voices(RA) in heaven, which said:

“The kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah,(RB)
and he will reign for ever and ever.”(RC)

16 And the twenty-four elders,(RD) who were seated on their thrones before God, fell on their faces(RE) and worshiped God, 17 saying:

“We give thanks(RF) to you, Lord God Almighty,(RG)
the One who is and who was,(RH)
because you have taken your great power
    and have begun to reign.(RI)
18 The nations were angry,(RJ)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,(RK)
and for rewarding your servants the prophets(RL)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small(RM)
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

19 Then God’s temple(RN) in heaven was opened, and within his temple was seen the ark of his covenant.(RO) And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder,(RP) an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.(RQ)

The Woman and the Dragon

12 A great sign(RR) appeared in heaven:(RS) a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars(RT) on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain(RU) as she was about to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven:(RV) an enormous red dragon(RW) with seven heads(RX) and ten horns(RY) and seven crowns(RZ) on its heads. Its tail swept a third(SA) of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth.(SB) The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that it might devour her child(SC) the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”[ab](SD) And her child was snatched up(SE) to God and to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.(SF)

Then war broke out in heaven. Michael(SG) and his angels fought against the dragon,(SH) and the dragon and his angels(SI) fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent(SJ) called the devil,(SK) or Satan,(SL) who leads the whole world astray.(SM) He was hurled to the earth,(SN) and his angels with him.

10 Then I heard a loud voice in heaven(SO) say:

“Now have come the salvation(SP) and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters,(SQ)
who accuses them before our God day and night,
    has been hurled down.
11 They triumphed over(SR) him
by the blood of the Lamb(SS)
and by the word of their testimony;(ST)
they did not love their lives so much
    as to shrink from death.(SU)
12 Therefore rejoice, you heavens(SV)
and you who dwell in them!
But woe(SW) to the earth and the sea,(SX)
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

13 When the dragon(SY) saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.(SZ) 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,(TA) so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,(TB) out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent(TC) spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war(TD) against the rest of her offspring(TE)—those who keep God’s commands(TF) and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.(TG)

The Beast out of the Sea

13 The dragon[ac] stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea.(TH) It had ten horns and seven heads,(TI) with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name.(TJ) The beast I saw resembled a leopard,(TK) but had feet like those of a bear(TL) and a mouth like that of a lion.(TM) The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.(TN) One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed.(TO) The whole world was filled with wonder(TP) and followed the beast. People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like(TQ) the beast? Who can wage war against it?”

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies(TR) and to exercise its authority for forty-two months.(TS) It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven.(TT) It was given power to wage war(TU) against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.(TV) All inhabitants of the earth(TW) will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life,(TX) the Lamb(TY) who was slain from the creation of the world.[ad](TZ)

Whoever has ears, let them hear.(UA)

10 “If anyone is to go into captivity,
    into captivity they will go.
If anyone is to be killed[ae] with the sword,
with the sword they will be killed.”[af](UB)

This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness(UC) on the part of God’s people.(UD)

The Beast out of the Earth

11 Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth.(UE) It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon.(UF) 12 It exercised all the authority(UG) of the first beast on its behalf,(UH) and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast,(UI) whose fatal wound had been healed.(UJ) 13 And it performed great signs,(UK) even causing fire to come down from heaven(UL) to the earth in full view of the people. 14 Because of the signs(UM) it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived(UN) the inhabitants of the earth.(UO) It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.(UP) 15 The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship(UQ) the image to be killed.(UR) 16 It also forced all people, great and small,(US) rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads,(UT) 17 so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark,(UU) which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.(UV)

18 This calls for wisdom.(UW) Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[ag](UX) That number is 666.

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb,(UY) standing on Mount Zion,(UZ) and with him 144,000(VA) who had his name and his Father’s name(VB) written on their foreheads.(VC) And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of rushing waters(VD) and like a loud peal of thunder.(VE) The sound I heard was like that of harpists playing their harps.(VF) And they sang a new song(VG) before the throne and before the four living creatures(VH) and the elders.(VI) No one could learn the song except the 144,000(VJ) who had been redeemed from the earth. These are those who did not defile themselves with women, for they remained virgins.(VK) They follow the Lamb wherever he goes.(VL) They were purchased from among mankind(VM) and offered as firstfruits(VN) to God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths;(VO) they are blameless.(VP)

The Three Angels

Then I saw another angel flying in midair,(VQ) and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth(VR)—to every nation, tribe, language and people.(VS) He said in a loud voice, “Fear God(VT) and give him glory,(VU) because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made(VV) the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”(VW)

A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’[ah](VX) which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”(VY)

A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the beast(VZ) and its image(WA) and receives its mark on their forehead(WB) or on their hand, 10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury,(WC) which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath.(WD) They will be tormented with burning sulfur(WE) in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever.(WF) There will be no rest day or night(WG) for those who worship the beast and its image,(WH) or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.”(WI) 12 This calls for patient endurance(WJ) on the part of the people of God(WK) who keep his commands(WL) and remain faithful to Jesus.

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord(WM) from now on.”

“Yes,” says the Spirit,(WN) “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Harvesting the Earth and Trampling the Winepress

14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud,(WO) and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man[ai](WP) with a crown(WQ) of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple(WR) and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle(WS) and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest(WT) of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle.(WU) 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar(WV) and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle(WW) and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath.(WX) 20 They were trampled in the winepress(WY) outside the city,(WZ) and blood(XA) flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.[aj]

Seven Angels With Seven Plagues

15 I saw in heaven another great and marvelous sign:(XB) seven angels(XC) with the seven last plagues(XD)—last, because with them God’s wrath is completed.
