The Glories of the Messiah and His Bride

To the Chief Musician. (A)Set to [a]“The Lilies.” A [b]Contemplation of the sons of Korah. A Song of Love.

45 My heart is overflowing with a good theme;
I recite my composition concerning the King;
My tongue is the pen of a [c]ready writer.

You are fairer than the sons of men;
(B)Grace is poured upon Your lips;
Therefore God has blessed You forever.
[d]Gird Your (C)sword upon Your thigh, (D)O Mighty One,
With Your (E)glory and Your majesty.
(F)And in Your majesty ride prosperously because of truth, humility, and righteousness;
And Your right hand shall teach You awesome things.
Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies;
The peoples fall under You.

(G)Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A (H)scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has (I)anointed You
With the oil of (J)gladness more than Your companions.
All Your garments are (K)scented with myrrh and aloes and cassia,
Out of the ivory palaces, by which they have made You glad.
(L)Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women;
(M)At Your right hand stands the queen in gold from Ophir.

10 Listen, O daughter,
Consider and incline your ear;
(N)Forget your own people also, and your father’s house;
11 So the King will greatly desire your beauty;
(O)Because He is your Lord, worship Him.
12 And the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift;
(P)The rich among the people will seek your favor.

13 The royal daughter is all glorious within the palace;
Her clothing is woven with gold.
14 (Q)She shall be brought to the King in robes of many colors;
The virgins, her companions who follow her, shall be brought to You.
15 With gladness and rejoicing they shall be brought;
They shall enter the King’s palace.

16 Instead of Your fathers shall be Your sons,
(R)Whom You shall make princes in all the earth.
17 (S)I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations;
Therefore the people shall praise You forever and ever.

God the Refuge of His People and Conqueror of the Nations

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song (T)for Alamoth.

46 God is our (U)refuge and strength,
(V)A[e] very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the [f]midst of the sea;
(W)Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

There is a (X)river whose streams shall make glad the (Y)city of God,
The holy place of the [g]tabernacle of the Most High.
God is (Z)in the midst of her, she shall not be [h]moved;
God shall help her, just [i]at the break of dawn.
(AA)The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;
He uttered His voice, the earth melted.

The (AB)Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Come, behold the works of the Lord,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
(AC)He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
(AD)He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
(AE)He burns the chariot in the fire.

10 Be still, and know that I am God;
(AF)I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

11 The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Praise to God, the Ruler of the Earth

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

47 Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples!
Shout to God with the voice of triumph!
For the Lord Most High is awesome;
He is a great (AG)King over all the earth.
(AH)He will subdue the peoples under us,
And the nations under our feet.
He will choose our (AI)inheritance for us,
The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah

(AJ)God has gone up with a shout,
The Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
(AK)For God is the King of all the earth;
(AL)Sing praises with understanding.

(AM)God reigns over the nations;
God (AN)sits on His (AO)holy throne.
The princes of the people have gathered together,
(AP)The people of the God of Abraham.
(AQ)For the shields of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.

The Glory of God in Zion

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

48 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
In the (AR)city of our God,
In His holy mountain.
(AS)Beautiful in [j]elevation,
The joy of the whole earth,
Is Mount Zion on the sides of the north,
The city of the great King.
God is in her palaces;
He is known as her refuge.

For behold, (AT)the kings assembled,
They passed by together.
They saw it, and so they marveled;
They were troubled, they hastened away.
Fear (AU)took hold of them there,
And pain, as of a woman in birth pangs,
As when You break the (AV)ships of Tarshish
With an east wind.

As we have heard,
So we have seen
In the city of the Lord of hosts,
In the city of our God:
God will (AW)establish it forever. Selah

We have thought, O God, on (AX)Your lovingkindness,
In the midst of Your temple.
10 According to (AY)Your name, O God,
So is Your praise to the ends of the earth;
Your right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let Mount Zion rejoice,
Let the daughters of Judah be glad,
Because of Your judgments.

12 Walk about Zion,
And go all around her.
Count her towers;
13 Mark well her bulwarks;
Consider her palaces;
That you may (AZ)tell it to the generation following.
14 For this is God,
Our God forever and ever;
(BA)He will be our guide
[k]Even to death.

The Confidence of the Foolish

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

49 Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
Both low and high,
Rich and poor together.
My mouth shall speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding.
I will incline my ear to a proverb;
I will disclose my [l]dark saying on the harp.

Why should I fear in the days of evil,
When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
Those who (BB)trust in their wealth
And boast in the multitude of their riches,
None of them can by any means redeem his brother,
Nor (BC)give to God a ransom for him—
For (BD)the redemption of their souls is costly,
And it shall cease forever—
That he should continue to live eternally,
And (BE)not [m]see the Pit.

10 For he sees wise men die;
Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish,
And leave their wealth to others.
11 [n]Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever,
Their dwelling places to all generations;
They (BF)call their lands after their own names.
12 Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not [o]remain;
He is like the beasts that perish.

13 This is the way of those who are (BG)foolish,
And of their posterity who approve their sayings. Selah
14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave;
Death shall feed on them;
(BH)The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
(BI)And their beauty shall be consumed in [p]the grave, far from their dwelling.
15 But God (BJ)will redeem my soul from the power of [q]the grave,
For He shall (BK)receive me. Selah

16 Do not be afraid when one becomes rich,
When the glory of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away;
His glory shall not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives (BL)he blesses himself
(For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
They shall never see (BM)light.[r]
20 A man who is in honor, yet does not understand,
(BN)Is like the beasts that perish.

God the Righteous Judge

A Psalm of Asaph.

50 The (BO)Mighty One, God the Lord,
Has spoken and called the earth
From the rising of the sun to its going down.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
(BP)God will shine forth.
Our God shall come, and shall not keep silent;
(BQ)A fire shall devour before Him,
And it shall be very tempestuous all around Him.

(BR)He shall call to the heavens from above,
And to the earth, that He may judge His people:
“Gather (BS)My saints together to Me,
(BT)Those who have [s]made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.”
Let the (BU)heavens declare His righteousness,
For (BV)God Himself is Judge. Selah

“Hear, O My people, and I will speak,
O Israel, and I will testify against you;
(BW)I am God, your God!
(BX)I will not [t]rebuke you (BY)for your sacrifices
Or your burnt offerings,
Which are continually before Me.
(BZ)I will not take a bull from your house,
Nor goats out of your folds.
10 For every beast of the forest is Mine,
And the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know all the birds of the mountains,
And the wild beasts of the field are Mine.

12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you;
(CA)For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.
13 (CB)Will I eat the flesh of bulls,
Or drink the blood of goats?
14 (CC)Offer to God thanksgiving,
And (CD)pay your vows to the Most High.
15 (CE)Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”

16 But to the wicked God says:
“What right have you to declare My statutes,
Or take My covenant in your mouth,
17 (CF)Seeing you hate instruction
And cast My words behind you?
18 When you saw a thief, you (CG)consented[u] with him,
And have been a (CH)partaker with adulterers.
19 You give your mouth to evil,
And (CI)your tongue frames deceit.
20 You sit and speak against your brother;
You slander your own mother’s son.
21 These things you have done, and I kept silent;
(CJ)You thought that I was altogether like you;
But I will rebuke you,
And (CK)set them in order before your eyes.

22 “Now consider this, you who (CL)forget God,
Lest I tear you in pieces,
And there be none to deliver:
23 Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;
And (CM)to him who orders his conduct aright
I will show the salvation of God.”

A Prayer of Repentance

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David (CN)when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

51 Have mercy upon me, O God,
According to Your lovingkindness;
According to the multitude of Your tender mercies,
(CO)Blot out my transgressions.
(CP)Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions,
And my sin is always before me.
(CQ)Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil (CR)in Your sight—
(CS)That You may be found just [v]when You speak,
And blameless when You judge.

(CT)Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.
Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts,
And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.

(CU)Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be (CV)whiter than snow.
Make me hear joy and gladness,
That the bones You have broken (CW)may rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins,
And blot out all my iniquities.

10 (CX)Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your (CY)Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your (CZ)generous Spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners shall be converted to You.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
The God of my salvation,
And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.
16 For (DA)You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
17 (DB)The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise.

18 Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion;
Build the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then You shall be pleased with (DC)the sacrifices of righteousness,
With burnt offering and whole burnt offering;
Then they shall offer bulls on Your altar.

Psalm 49[o]

For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.

Hear(DZ) this, all you peoples;(EA)
    listen, all who live in this world,(EB)
both low and high,(EC)
    rich and poor alike:
My mouth will speak words of wisdom;(ED)
    the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.(EE)
I will turn my ear to a proverb;(EF)
    with the harp(EG) I will expound my riddle:(EH)

Why should I fear(EI) when evil days come,
    when wicked deceivers surround me—
those who trust in their wealth(EJ)
    and boast(EK) of their great riches?(EL)
No one can redeem the life of another
    or give to God a ransom for them—
the ransom(EM) for a life is costly,
    no payment is ever enough—(EN)
so that they should live on(EO) forever
    and not see decay.(EP)
10 For all can see that the wise die,(EQ)
    that the foolish and the senseless(ER) also perish,
    leaving their wealth(ES) to others.(ET)
11 Their tombs(EU) will remain their houses[p] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,(EV)
    though they had[q] named(EW) lands after themselves.

12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;(EX)
    they are like the beasts that perish.(EY)

13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,(EZ)
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[r]
14 They are like sheep and are destined(FA) to die;(FB)
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail(FC) over them in the morning).
Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;(FD)
    he will surely take me to himself.(FE)
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich,
    when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing(FF) with them when they die,
    their splendor will not descend with them.(FG)
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed—(FH)
    and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them,(FI)
    who will never again see the light(FJ) of life.

20 People who have wealth but lack understanding(FK)
    are like the beasts that perish.(FL)

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

The Mighty One, God, the Lord,(FM)
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to where it sets.(FN)
From Zion,(FO) perfect in beauty,(FP)
    God shines forth.(FQ)
Our God comes(FR)
    and will not be silent;(FS)
a fire devours(FT) before him,(FU)
    and around him a tempest(FV) rages.
He summons the heavens above,
    and the earth,(FW) that he may judge his people:(FX)
“Gather to me this consecrated people,(FY)
    who made a covenant(FZ) with me by sacrifice.”
And the heavens proclaim(GA) his righteousness,
    for he is a God of justice.[s][t](GB)

“Listen, my people, and I will speak;
    I will testify(GC) against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.(GD)
I bring no charges(GE) against you concerning your sacrifices
    or concerning your burnt offerings,(GF) which are ever before me.
I have no need of a bull(GG) from your stall
    or of goats(GH) from your pens,(GI)
10 for every animal of the forest(GJ) is mine,
    and the cattle on a thousand hills.(GK)
11 I know every bird(GL) in the mountains,
    and the insects in the fields(GM) are mine.
12 If I were hungry I would not tell you,
    for the world(GN) is mine, and all that is in it.(GO)
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?

14 “Sacrifice thank offerings(GP) to God,
    fulfill your vows(GQ) to the Most High,(GR)
15 and call(GS) on me in the day of trouble;(GT)
    I will deliver(GU) you, and you will honor(GV) me.”

16 But to the wicked person, God says:

“What right have you to recite my laws
    or take my covenant(GW) on your lips?(GX)
17 You hate(GY) my instruction
    and cast my words behind(GZ) you.
18 When you see a thief, you join(HA) with him;
    you throw in your lot with adulterers.(HB)
19 You use your mouth for evil
    and harness your tongue to deceit.(HC)
20 You sit and testify against your brother(HD)
    and slander your own mother’s son.
21 When you did these things and I kept silent,(HE)
    you thought I was exactly[u] like you.
But I now arraign(HF) you
    and set my accusations(HG) before you.

22 “Consider this, you who forget God,(HH)
    or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:(HI)
23 Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
    and to the blameless[v] I will show my salvation.(HJ)

Psalm 51[w]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.(HK)

Have mercy(HL) on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;(HM)
according to your great compassion(HN)
    blot out(HO) my transgressions.(HP)
Wash away(HQ) all my iniquity
    and cleanse(HR) me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.(HS)
Against you, you only, have I sinned(HT)
    and done what is evil in your sight;(HU)
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.(HV)
Surely I was sinful(HW) at birth,(HX)
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom(HY) in that secret place.(HZ)

Cleanse(IA) me with hyssop,(IB) and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.(IC)
Let me hear joy and gladness;(ID)
    let the bones(IE) you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins(IF)
    and blot out(IG) all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart,(IH) O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.(II)
11 Do not cast me(IJ) from your presence(IK)
    or take your Holy Spirit(IL) from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation(IM)
    and grant me a willing spirit,(IN) to sustain me.(IO)

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,(IP)
    so that sinners(IQ) will turn back to you.(IR)
14 Deliver me(IS) from the guilt of bloodshed,(IT) O God,
    you who are God my Savior,(IU)
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.(IV)
15 Open my lips, Lord,(IW)
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice,(IX) or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice,(IY) O God, is[x] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart(IZ)
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,(JA)
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.(JB)
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,(JC)
    in burnt offerings(JD) offered whole;
