Psalm 30[a]

A psalm. A song. For the dedication of the temple.[b] Of David.

I will exalt(A) you, Lord,
    for you lifted me out of the depths(B)
    and did not let my enemies gloat over me.(C)
Lord my God, I called to you for help,(D)
    and you healed me.(E)
You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;(F)
    you spared me from going down to the pit.(G)

Sing(H) the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;(I)
    praise his holy name.(J)
For his anger(K) lasts only a moment,(L)
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;(M)
weeping(N) may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.(O)

When I felt secure, I said,
    “I will never be shaken.”(P)
Lord, when you favored me,
    you made my royal mountain[c] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,(Q)
    I was dismayed.

To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
“What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?(R)
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?(S)
10 Hear,(T) Lord, and be merciful to me;(U)
    Lord, be my help.(V)

11 You turned my wailing(W) into dancing;(X)
    you removed my sackcloth(Y) and clothed me with joy,(Z)
12 that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
    Lord my God, I will praise(AA) you forever.(AB)

Psalm 31[d](AC)

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;(AD)
    let me never be put to shame;
    deliver me in your righteousness.(AE)
Turn your ear to me,(AF)
    come quickly to my rescue;(AG)
be my rock of refuge,(AH)
    a strong fortress to save me.
Since you are my rock and my fortress,(AI)
    for the sake of your name(AJ) lead and guide me.
Keep me free from the trap(AK) that is set for me,
    for you are my refuge.(AL)
Into your hands I commit my spirit;(AM)
    deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.(AN)

I hate those who cling to worthless idols;(AO)
    as for me, I trust in the Lord.(AP)
I will be glad and rejoice in your love,
    for you saw my affliction(AQ)
    and knew the anguish(AR) of my soul.
You have not given me into the hands(AS) of the enemy
    but have set my feet in a spacious place.(AT)

Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;(AU)
    my eyes grow weak with sorrow,(AV)
    my soul and body(AW) with grief.
10 My life is consumed by anguish(AX)
    and my years by groaning;(AY)
my strength fails(AZ) because of my affliction,[e](BA)
    and my bones grow weak.(BB)
11 Because of all my enemies,(BC)
    I am the utter contempt(BD) of my neighbors(BE)
and an object of dread to my closest friends—
    those who see me on the street flee from me.
12 I am forgotten as though I were dead;(BF)
    I have become like broken pottery.
13 For I hear many whispering,(BG)
    “Terror on every side!”(BH)
They conspire against me(BI)
    and plot to take my life.(BJ)

14 But I trust(BK) in you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times(BL) are in your hands;
    deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
    from those who pursue me.
16 Let your face shine(BM) on your servant;
    save me in your unfailing love.(BN)
17 Let me not be put to shame,(BO) Lord,
    for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
    and be silent(BP) in the realm of the dead.
18 Let their lying lips(BQ) be silenced,
    for with pride and contempt
    they speak arrogantly(BR) against the righteous.

19 How abundant are the good things(BS)
    that you have stored up for those who fear you,
that you bestow in the sight of all,(BT)
    on those who take refuge(BU) in you.
20 In the shelter(BV) of your presence you hide(BW) them
    from all human intrigues;(BX)
you keep them safe in your dwelling
    from accusing tongues.

21 Praise be to the Lord,(BY)
    for he showed me the wonders of his love(BZ)
    when I was in a city under siege.(CA)
22 In my alarm(CB) I said,
    “I am cut off(CC) from your sight!”
Yet you heard my cry(CD) for mercy
    when I called to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all his faithful people!(CE)
    The Lord preserves those who are true to him,(CF)
    but the proud he pays back(CG) in full.
24 Be strong and take heart,(CH)
    all you who hope in the Lord.

    whose sin the Lord does not count against them(CJ)
    and in whose spirit is no deceit.(CK)

When I kept silent,(CL)
    my bones wasted away(CM)
    through my groaning(CN) all day long.
For day and night
    your hand was heavy(CO) on me;
my strength was sapped(CP)
    as in the heat of summer.[g]

Then I acknowledged my sin to you
    and did not cover up my iniquity.(CQ)
I said, “I will confess(CR)
    my transgressions(CS) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
    the guilt of my sin.(CT)

Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
    while you may be found;(CU)
surely the rising(CV) of the mighty waters(CW)
    will not reach them.(CX)
You are my hiding place;(CY)
    you will protect me from trouble(CZ)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.(DA)

I will instruct(DB) you and teach you(DC) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on(DD) you.
Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle(DE)
    or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the woes of the wicked,(DF)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts(DG) in him.

Let all the earth fear the Lord;(DZ)
    let all the people of the world(EA) revere him.(EB)
For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,(EC) and it stood firm.

10 The Lord foils(ED) the plans(EE) of the nations;(EF)
    he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm(EG) forever,
    the purposes(EH) of his heart through all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,(EI)
    the people he chose(EJ) for his inheritance.(EK)

    who considers everything they do.(EP)

16 No king is saved by the size of his army;(EQ)
    no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17 A horse(ER) is a vain hope for deliverance;
    despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18 But the eyes(ES) of the Lord are on those who fear him,
    on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,(ET)
19 to deliver them from death(EU)
    and keep them alive in famine.(EV)

20 We wait(EW) in hope for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.

30 I will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.

O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.

Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.

I cried to thee, O Lord; and unto the Lord I made supplication.

What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me: Lord, be thou my helper.

11 Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

12 To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

31 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed: deliver me in thy righteousness.

Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me.

For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

Pull me out of the net that they have laid privily for me: for thou art my strength.

Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth.

I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the Lord.

I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities;

And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.

Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble: mine eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my belly.

10 For my life is spent with grief, and my years with sighing: my strength faileth because of mine iniquity, and my bones are consumed.

11 I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.

12 I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind: I am like a broken vessel.

13 For I have heard the slander of many: fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life.

14 But I trusted in thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God.

15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.

16 Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies' sake.

17 Let me not be ashamed, O Lord; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.

18 Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

19 Oh how great is thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for them that fear thee; which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men!

20 Thou shalt hide them in the secret of thy presence from the pride of man: thou shalt keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.

22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

23 O love the Lord, all ye his saints: for the Lord preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.

24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.

32 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.

11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

33 Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

Praise the Lord with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.

Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth.

He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

10 The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

11 The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

13 The Lord looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.

14 From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

15 He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.

17 An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;

19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord: he is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.

34 I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

O fear the Lord, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.

14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.

20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

22 The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

The Blessedness of Answered Prayer

A Psalm. A Song (A)at the dedication of the house of David.

30 I will extol You, O Lord, for You have (B)lifted me up,
And have not let my foes (C)rejoice over me.
O Lord my God, I cried out to You,
And You (D)healed me.
O Lord, (E)You brought my soul up from the grave;
You have kept me alive, [a]that I should not go down to the pit.

(F)Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His,
And give thanks at the remembrance of [b]His holy name.
For (G)His anger is but for a moment,
(H)His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But [c]joy comes in the morning.

Now in my prosperity I said,
“I shall never be [d]moved.”
Lord, by Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong;
(I)You hid Your face, and I was troubled.

I cried out to You, O Lord;
And to the Lord I made supplication:
“What profit is there in my blood,
When I go down to the pit?
(J)Will the dust praise You?
Will it declare Your truth?
10 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy on me;
Lord, be my helper!”

11 (K)You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
You have put off [e]my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,
12 To the end that my [f]glory may sing praise to You and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever.

The Lord a Fortress in Adversity

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

31 In (L)You, O Lord, I [g]put my trust;
Let me never be ashamed;
Deliver me in Your righteousness.
(M)Bow down Your ear to me,
Deliver me speedily;
Be my rock of [h]refuge,
A [i]fortress of defense to save me.

(N)For You are my rock and my fortress;
Therefore, (O)for Your name’s sake,
Lead me and guide me.
Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me,
For You are my strength.
(P)Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
You have redeemed me, O Lord God of (Q)truth.

I have hated those (R)who regard useless idols;
But I trust in the Lord.
I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy,
For You have considered my trouble;
You have (S)known my soul in [j]adversities,
And have not (T)shut[k] me up into the hand of the enemy;
(U)You have set my feet in a wide place.

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble;
(V)My eye wastes away with grief,
Yes, my soul and my [l]body!
10 For my life is spent with grief,
And my years with sighing;
My strength fails because of my iniquity,
And my bones waste away.
11 (W)I am a [m]reproach among all my enemies,
But (X)especially among my neighbors,
And am repulsive to my acquaintances;
(Y)Those who see me outside flee from me.
12 (Z)I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind;
I am like a [n]broken vessel.
13 (AA)For I hear the slander of many;
(AB)Fear is on every side;
While they (AC)take counsel together against me,
They scheme to take away my life.

14 But as for me, I trust in You, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
15 My times are in Your (AD)hand;
Deliver me from the hand of my enemies,
And from those who persecute me.
16 (AE)Make Your face shine upon Your servant;
Save me for Your mercies’ sake.
17 (AF)Do not let me be ashamed, O Lord, for I have called upon You;
Let the wicked be ashamed;
(AG)Let them be silent in the grave.
18 (AH)Let the lying lips be put to silence,
Which (AI)speak insolent things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

19 (AJ)Oh, how great is Your goodness,
Which You have laid up for those who fear You,
Which You have prepared for those who trust in You
In the presence of the sons of men!
20 (AK)You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence
From the plots of man;
(AL)You shall keep them secretly in a [o]pavilion
From the strife of tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord,
For (AM)He has shown me His marvelous kindness in a [p]strong city!
22 For I said in my haste,
“I am cut off from before Your eyes”;
Nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications
When I cried out to You.

23 Oh, love the Lord, all you His saints!
For the Lord preserves the faithful,
And fully repays the proud person.
24 (AN)Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord.

The Joy of Forgiveness

A Psalm of David. A [q]Contemplation.

32 Blessed is he whose (AO)transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord (AP)does not [r]impute iniquity,
And (AQ)in whose spirit there is no deceit.

When I kept silent, my bones grew old
Through my groaning all the day long.
For day and night Your (AR)hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah
I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I have not hidden.
(AS)I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

(AT)For this cause everyone who is godly shall (AU)pray to You
In a time when You may be found;
Surely in a flood of great waters
They shall not come near him.
(AV)You are my hiding place;
You shall preserve me from trouble;
You shall surround me with (AW)songs of deliverance. Selah

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will guide you with My eye.
Do not be like the (AX)horse or like the mule,
Which have no understanding,
Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
Else they will not come near you.

10 (AY)Many sorrows shall be to the wicked;
But (AZ)he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.
11 (BA)Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous;
And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

The Sovereignty of the Lord in Creation and History

33 Rejoice (BB)in the Lord, O you righteous!
For praise from the upright is beautiful.
Praise the Lord with the harp;
[s]Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings.
Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout of joy.

For the word of the Lord is right,
And all His work is done in truth.
He loves righteousness and justice;
The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord.

(BC)By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And all the (BD)host of them (BE)by the breath of His mouth.
(BF)He gathers the waters of the sea together [t]as a heap;

Let all the earth fear the Lord;
Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
For (BG)He spoke, and it was done;
He commanded, and it stood fast.

10 (BH)The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.
11 (BI)The counsel of the Lord stands forever,
The plans of His heart to all generations.
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has (BJ)chosen as His own inheritance.

13 (BK)The Lord looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men.
14 From the place of His dwelling He looks
On all the inhabitants of the earth;
15 He fashions their hearts individually;
(BL)He [u]considers all their works.

16 (BM)No king is saved by the multitude of an army;
A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.
17 (BN)A horse is a [v]vain hope for safety;
Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.

18 (BO)Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy,
19 To deliver their soul from death,
And (BP)to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
Because we have trusted in His holy name.
22 Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
Just as we hope in You.

The Happiness of Those Who Trust in God

A Psalm of David (BQ)when he pretended madness before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed.

34 I will (BR)bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together.

I (BS)sought the Lord, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant,
And their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him,
And saved him out of all his troubles.
(BT)The [w]angel of the Lord (BU)encamps all around those who fear Him,
And delivers them.

Oh, (BV)taste and see that the Lord is good;
(BW)Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints!
There is no [x]want to those who fear Him.
10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger;
(BX)But those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.

11 Come, you children, listen to me;
(BY)I will teach you the fear of the Lord.
12 (BZ)Who is the man who desires life,
And loves many days, that he may see good?
13 Keep your tongue from evil,
And your lips from speaking (CA)deceit.
14 (CB)Depart from evil and do good;
(CC)Seek peace and pursue it.

15 (CD)The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,
And His ears are open to their cry.
16 (CE)The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
(CF)To [y]cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out, and (CG)the Lord hears,
And delivers them out of all their troubles.
18 (CH)The Lord is near (CI)to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as [z]have a contrite spirit.

19 (CJ)Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
(CK)But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
20 He guards all his bones;
(CL)Not one of them is broken.
21 (CM)Evil shall slay the wicked,
And those who hate the righteous shall be [aa]condemned.
22 The Lord (CN)redeems the soul of His servants,
And none of those who trust in Him shall be condemned.
