Psalm 47

God Our King

For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Clap your hands, all you peoples;(A)
shout to God with a jubilant cry.(B)
For Yahweh, the Most High, is awe-inspiring,
a great King over all the earth.(C)
He subdues peoples under us
and nations under our feet.(D)
He chooses for us our inheritance—
the pride of Jacob, whom He loves.(E)Selah

God ascends among shouts of joy,
the Lord, among the sound of trumpets.(F)
Sing praise to God, sing praise;
sing praise to our King, sing praise!(G)
Sing a song of wisdom,[a]
for God is King of all the earth.(H)

God reigns over the nations;
God is seated on His holy throne.(I)
The nobles of the peoples have assembled
with the people of the God of Abraham.(J)
For the leaders[b] of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.(K)

Psalm 48

Zion Exalted

A song. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

The Lord is great and highly praised
in the city of our God.(L)
His holy mountain, rising splendidly,
is the joy of the whole earth.
Mount Zion on the slopes of the north
is the city of the great King.(M)
God is known as a stronghold
in its citadels.(N)

Look! The kings assembled;
they advanced together.(O)
They looked and froze with fear;
they fled in terror.(P)
Trembling seized them there,
agony like that of a woman in labor,(Q)
as You wrecked the ships of Tarshish
with the east wind.(R)

Just as we heard, so we have seen
in the city of Yahweh of Hosts,
in the city of our God;
God will establish it forever.(S)Selah

God, within Your temple,
we contemplate Your faithful love.(T)
10 Your name, God, like Your praise,
reaches to the ends of the earth;(U)
Your right hand is filled with justice.(V)
11 Mount Zion is glad.
The towns[c] of Judah rejoice
because of Your judgments.(W)

12 Go around Zion, encircle it;
count its towers,
13 note its ramparts; tour its citadels
so that you can tell a future generation:(X)
14 “This God, our God forever and ever—
He will always lead us.”[d](Y)

Psalm 49

Misplaced Trust in Wealth

For the choir director. A psalm of the sons of Korah.

Hear this, all you peoples;
listen, all who inhabit the world,(Z)
both low and high,[e]
rich and poor together.(AA)
My mouth speaks wisdom;
my heart’s meditation brings understanding.(AB)
I turn my ear to a proverb;
I explain my riddle with a lyre.(AC)

Why should I fear in times of trouble?
The iniquity of my foes surrounds me.(AD)
They trust in their wealth
and boast of their abundant riches.(AE)
Yet these cannot redeem a person[f]
or pay his ransom to God(AF)
since the price of redeeming him is too costly,
one should forever stop trying[g](AG)
so that he may live forever
and not see the Pit.(AH)

10 For one can see that wise men die;
foolish and stupid men also pass away.(AI)
Then they leave their wealth to others.(AJ)
11 Their graves are their eternal homes,[h]
their homes from generation to generation,
though they have named estates after themselves.(AK)
12 But despite his assets,[i] man will not last;
he is like the animals that perish.(AL)

13 This is the way of those who are arrogant,
and of their followers,
who approve of their words.[j](AM)Selah
14 Like sheep they are headed for Sheol;
Death will shepherd them.
The upright will rule over them in the morning,(AN)
and their form will waste away in Sheol,[k]
far from their lofty abode.(AO)
15 But God will redeem my life
from the power of Sheol,
for He will take me.(AP)Selah

16 Do not be afraid when a man gets rich,
when the wealth[l] of his house increases.(AQ)
17 For when he dies, he will take nothing at all;
his wealth[m] will not follow him down.(AR)
18 Though he praises himself during his lifetime—
and people praise you when you do well for yourself(AS)
19 he will go to the generation of his fathers;
they will never see the light.(AT)
20 A man with valuable possessions[n]
but without understanding
is like the animals that perish.(AU)
