New International Version

Psalm 101

Of David. A psalm.

¹I will sing of your love^(A) and justice;
to you, Lord, I will sing praise.
²I will be careful to lead a blameless life^(B)—
when will you come to me?

I will conduct the affairs^(C) of my house
with a blameless heart.
³I will not look with approval
on anything that is vile.^(D)

I hate what faithless people do;^(E)
I will have no part in it.
⁴The perverse of heart^(F) shall be far from me;
I will have nothing to do with what is evil.

⁵Whoever slanders their neighbor^(G) in secret,
I will put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes^(H) and a proud heart,
I will not tolerate.

⁶My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
that they may dwell with me;
the one whose walk is blameless^(I)
will minister to me.

⁷No one who practices deceit
will dwell in my house;
no one who speaks falsely
will stand in my presence.

⁸Every morning^(J) I will put to silence
all the wicked^(K) in the land;
I will cut off every evildoer^(L)
from the city of the Lord.^(M)

¹³You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”^(A) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,^(B) and the Lord for the body. ¹⁴By his power God raised the Lord from the dead,^(C) and he will raise us also.^(D) ¹⁵Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?^(E) Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! ¹⁶Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”^[a]^(F) ¹⁷But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.^[b]^(G)

¹⁸Flee from sexual immorality.^(H) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.^(I) ¹⁹Do you not know that your bodies are temples^(J) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;^(K) ²⁰you were bought at a price.^(L) Therefore honor God with your bodies.^(M)

¹⁵Drink water from your own cistern,
    running water from your own well.
¹⁶Should your springs overflow in the streets,
    your streams of water in the public squares?
¹⁷Let them be yours alone,
    never to be shared with strangers.
¹⁸May your fountain^(A) be blessed,
    and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.^(B)
¹⁹A loving doe, a graceful deer^(C)—
    may her breasts satisfy you always,
    may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
²⁰Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
    Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

²¹For your ways are in full view^(D) of the Lord,
and he examines^(E) all your paths.^(F)

Warning Against Adultery

²⁰My son,^(A) keep your father’s command
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.^(B)
²¹Bind them always on your heart;
    fasten them around your neck.^(C)
²²When you walk, they will guide you;
    when you sleep, they will watch over you;
    when you awake, they will speak to you.
²³For this command is a lamp,
    this teaching is a light,^(D)
and correction and instruction
    are the way to life,^(E)
²⁴keeping you from your neighbor’s wife,
    from the smooth talk of a wayward woman.^(F)

²⁵Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes.

²⁶For a prostitute can be had for a loaf of bread,
    but another man’s wife preys on your very life.^(G)
²⁷Can a man scoop fire into his lap
    without his clothes being burned?
²⁸Can a man walk on hot coals
    without his feet being scorched?
²⁹So is he who sleeps^(H) with another man’s wife;^(I)
    no one who touches her will go unpunished.

³⁰People do not despise a thief if he steals
    to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
³¹Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,^(J)
    though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
³²But a man who commits adultery^(K) has no sense;^(L)
    whoever does so destroys himself.
³³Blows and disgrace are his lot,
    and his shame will never^(M) be wiped away.

³⁴For jealousy^(N) arouses a husband’s fury,^(O)
and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
³⁵He will not accept any compensation;
he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.^(P)

Warning Against the Adulterous Woman

7 My son,^(Q) keep my words
    and store up my commands within you.
²Keep my commands and you will live;^(R)
    guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
³Bind them on your fingers;
    write them on the tablet of your heart.^(S)
⁴Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
    and to insight, “You are my relative.”
⁵They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
    from the wayward woman with her seductive words.^(T)

⁶At the window of my house
    I looked down through the lattice.
⁷I saw among the simple,
    I noticed among the young men,
    a youth who had no sense.^(U)
⁸He was going down the street near her corner,
    walking along in the direction of her house
⁹at twilight,^(V) as the day was fading,
    as the dark of night set in.

¹⁰Then out came a woman to meet him,
    dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.
¹¹(She is unruly^(W) and defiant,
    her feet never stay at home;
¹²now in the street, now in the squares,
    at every corner she lurks.)^(X)
¹³She took hold of him^(Y) and kissed him
    and with a brazen face she said:^(Z)

¹⁴“Today I fulfilled my vows,
    and I have food from my fellowship offering^(AA) at home.
¹⁵So I came out to meet you;
    I looked for you and have found you!
¹⁶I have covered my bed
    with colored linens from Egypt.
¹⁷I have perfumed my bed^(AB)
    with myrrh,^(AC) aloes and cinnamon.
¹⁸Come, let’s drink deeply of love till morning;
    let’s enjoy ourselves with love!^(AD)
¹⁹My husband is not at home;
    he has gone on a long journey.
²⁰He took his purse filled with money
    and will not be home till full moon.”

²¹With persuasive words she led him astray;
    she seduced him with her smooth talk.^(AE)
²²All at once he followed her
    like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer^[a] stepping into a noose^[b]^(AF)
²³    till an arrow pierces^(AG) his liver,
like a bird darting into a snare,
    little knowing it will cost him his life.^(AH)

²⁴Now then, my sons, listen^(AI) to me;
    pay attention to what I say.
²⁵Do not let your heart turn to her ways
    or stray into her paths.^(AJ)
²⁶Many are the victims she has brought down;
    her slain are a mighty throng.
²⁷Her house is a highway to the grave,
    leading down to the chambers of death.^(AK)
