56  Ki te tino kaiwhakatangi. Ionata ereme rehokime. Na Rawiri. He Mikitama, i a ia ka mau i nga Pirihitini ki Kata.

E whakariroia ketia ana e ratou aku kupu i nga ra katoa; heoi ano ta ratou e whakaaro ai ko te kino moku.

E huihui ana ratou, e piri ana: e titiro matatau ana ki oku hikoinga, i a ratou e whanga nei ki toku wairua.

E taua ana e koe oku kopikopikotanga: rongoatia oku roimata ki roto ki tau ipu: kahore ianei i tau pukapuka?

Psalm 56[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.[b] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.

Be merciful to me,(A) my God,
    for my enemies are in hot pursuit;(B)
    all day long they press their attack.(C)
My adversaries pursue me all day long;(D)
    in their pride many are attacking me.(E)

When I am afraid,(F) I put my trust in you.(G)
    In God, whose word I praise—(H)
in God I trust and am not afraid.(I)
    What can mere mortals do to me?(J)

All day long they twist my words;(K)
    all their schemes are for my ruin.
They conspire,(L) they lurk,
    they watch my steps,(M)
    hoping to take my life.(N)
Because of their wickedness do not[c] let them escape;(O)
    in your anger, God, bring the nations down.(P)

Record my misery;
    list my tears on your scroll[d](Q)
    are they not in your record?(R)
Then my enemies will turn back(S)
    when I call for help.(T)
    By this I will know that God is for me.(U)

10 In God, whose word I praise,
    in the Lord, whose word I praise—
11 in God I trust and am not afraid.
    What can man do to me?

12 I am under vows(V) to you, my God;
    I will present my thank offerings to you.
13 For you have delivered me from death(W)
    and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.(X)

120  He waiata; he pikitanga.

Ko nga pere koi a te hunga nunui, me nga waro hunipa.

Psalm 120

A song of ascents.

I call on the Lord(A) in my distress,(B)
    and he answers me.
Save me, Lord,
    from lying lips(C)
    and from deceitful tongues.(D)

What will he do to you,
    and what more besides,
    you deceitful tongue?
He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows,(E)
    with burning coals of the broom bush.

Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek,
    that I live among the tents of Kedar!(F)
Too long have I lived
    among those who hate peace.
I am for peace;
    but when I speak, they are for war.

140  Ki te tino kaiwhakatangi. He himene na Rawiri. Whakaorangia ahau, e Ihowa, i te tangata kino: araia atu i ahau te tangata tutu:

E whakaaro kino nei i o ratou ngakau: e whakamine nei i a ratou i nga wa katoa ki te whawhai.

Kua whakakoia to ratou arero, ano he nakahi: kei raro i o ratou ngutu te wai whakamate o te neke. (Hera.

Tiakina ahau, e Ihowa, i nga ringa o te hunga kino: araia atu i ahau te tangata tutu, kua mea nei kia tutea oku hikoinga.

Kua huna e te hunga whakakake te mahanga moku, me nga aho; kua horahia e ratou he kupenga ki te taha o te ara: kua whakapikoa e ratou he rore moku. (Hera.

I mea ahau ki a Ihowa, Ko koe toku Atua: whakarongo, e Ihowa, ki toku reo inoi.

E Ihowa, e te Ariki, e te kaha o toku whakaoranga, nau i hipoki toku upoko i te ra o te tatauranga.

Aua e whakaaetia, e Ihowa, nga hiahia o te tangata kino: kei taea tona whakaaro koroke; kei whakakake ratou. (Hera.

141  He himene na Rawiri.

Homai he kaitiaki mo toku mangai, e Ihowa: tiakina te kuwaha o oku ngutu.

Tiakina ahau kei mau i nga mahanga i whakatakotoria e ratou moku, i nga rore hoki a nga kaimahi i te kino.

142  He Makiri na Rawiri; he inoi i a ia i roto i te ana. He karanga ta toku reo ki a Ihowa; he inoi ta toku reo ki a Ihowa.

Tahuri mai ki taku karanga: kua whakaititia rawatia hoki ahau: whakaorangia ahau i oku kaitukino: he kaha rawa hoki ratou i ahau.

Whakaputaina toku wairua i te herehere, kia whakamoemiti ai ahau ki tou ingoa: ka karapotia ahau e te hunga tika; nou ka atawhai nei i ahau.

Psalm 140[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

Rescue me,(A) Lord, from evildoers;
    protect me from the violent,(B)
who devise evil plans(C) in their hearts
    and stir up war(D) every day.
They make their tongues as sharp as(E) a serpent’s;
    the poison of vipers(F) is on their lips.[b]

Keep me safe,(G) Lord, from the hands of the wicked;(H)
    protect me from the violent,
    who devise ways to trip my feet.
The arrogant have hidden a snare(I) for me;
    they have spread out the cords of their net(J)
    and have set traps(K) for me along my path.

I say to the Lord, “You are my God.”(L)
    Hear, Lord, my cry for mercy.(M)
Sovereign Lord,(N) my strong deliverer,
    you shield my head in the day of battle.
Do not grant the wicked(O) their desires, Lord;
    do not let their plans succeed.

Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
    may the mischief of their lips engulf them.(P)
10 May burning coals fall on them;
    may they be thrown into the fire,(Q)
    into miry pits, never to rise.
11 May slanderers not be established in the land;
    may disaster hunt down the violent.(R)

12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor(S)
    and upholds the cause(T) of the needy.(U)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name,(V)
    and the upright will live(W) in your presence.(X)

Psalm 141

A psalm of David.

I call to you, Lord, come quickly(Y) to me;
    hear me(Z) when I call to you.
May my prayer be set before you like incense;(AA)
    may the lifting up of my hands(AB) be like the evening sacrifice.(AC)

Set a guard over my mouth,(AD) Lord;
    keep watch over the door of my lips.(AE)
Do not let my heart(AF) be drawn to what is evil
    so that I take part in wicked deeds(AG)
along with those who are evildoers;
    do not let me eat their delicacies.(AH)

Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
    let him rebuke me(AI)—that is oil on my head.(AJ)
My head will not refuse it,
    for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.

Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,(AK)
    and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
They will say, “As one plows(AL) and breaks up the earth,(AM)
    so our bones have been scattered at the mouth(AN) of the grave.”

But my eyes are fixed(AO) on you, Sovereign Lord;
    in you I take refuge(AP)—do not give me over to death.
Keep me safe(AQ) from the traps set by evildoers,(AR)
    from the snares(AS) they have laid for me.
10 Let the wicked fall(AT) into their own nets,
    while I pass by in safety.(AU)

Psalm 142[c]

A maskil[d] of David. When he was in the cave.(AV) A prayer.

I cry aloud(AW) to the Lord;
    I lift up my voice to the Lord for mercy.(AX)
I pour out before him my complaint;(AY)
    before him I tell my trouble.(AZ)

When my spirit grows faint(BA) within me,
    it is you who watch over my way.
In the path where I walk
    people have hidden a snare for me.
Look and see, there is no one at my right hand;
    no one is concerned for me.
I have no refuge;(BB)
    no one cares(BC) for my life.

I cry to you, Lord;
    I say, “You are my refuge,(BD)
    my portion(BE) in the land of the living.”(BF)

Listen to my cry,(BG)
    for I am in desperate need;(BH)
rescue me(BI) from those who pursue me,
    for they are too strong(BJ) for me.
Set me free from my prison,(BK)
    that I may praise your name.(BL)
Then the righteous will gather about me
    because of your goodness to me.(BM)
