Reuben and Gad Settle in Gilead

32 Now the people of Reuben and the people of Gad had a very great number of livestock. And they saw the land of ^(A)Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold, the place was a place for livestock. ²So the people of Gad and the people of Reuben came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the chiefs of the congregation, ³^(B)“Ataroth, ^(C)Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, ^(D)Nebo, and Beon, ⁴the land ^(E)that the Lord struck down before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock.” ⁵And they said, “If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants for a possession. Do not take us across the Jordan.”

⁶But Moses said to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben, “Shall your brothers go to the war while you sit here? ⁷Why will you discourage the heart of the people of Israel from going over into the land that the Lord has given them? ⁸Your fathers did this, ^(F)when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. ⁹For when they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the people of Israel from going into the land that the Lord had given them. ¹⁰^(G)And the Lord's anger was kindled on that day, and he swore, saying, ¹¹‘Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, ^(H)from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land that I swore to give ^(I)to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, because they have not wholly followed me, ¹²none except Caleb the son of Jephunneh the ^(J)Kenizzite and Joshua the son of Nun, for ^(K)they have wholly followed the Lord.’ ¹³And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them ^(L)wander in the wilderness forty years, until ^(M)all the generation that had done evil in the sight of the Lord was gone. ¹⁴And behold, you have risen in your fathers' place, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more the fierce anger of the Lord against Israel! ¹⁵For if you ^(N)turn away from following him, he will again abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.”

¹⁶Then they came near to him and said, ^(O)“We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones, ¹⁷but ^(P)we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁸^(Q)We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance. ¹⁹For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, ^(R)because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east.” ²⁰So ^(S)Moses said to them, “If you will do this, if you will take up arms to go before the Lord for the war, ²¹and every armed man of you will pass over the Jordan before the Lord, until he has ^(T)driven out his enemies from before him ²²and the land is subdued before the Lord; then after that you shall return and be free of obligation to the Lord and to Israel, and ^(U)this land shall be your possession before the Lord. ²³But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the Lord, and ^(V)be sure your sin will find you out. ²⁴^(W)Build cities for your little ones and folds for your sheep, and do what you have promised.” ²⁵And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben said to Moses, “Your servants will do as my lord commands. ²⁶^(X)Our little ones, our wives, our livestock, and all our cattle shall remain there in the cities of Gilead, ²⁷^(Y)but your servants will pass over, every man who is ^(Z)armed for war, before the Lord to battle, as my lord orders.”

²⁸So ^(AA)Moses gave command concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to ^(AB)Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel. ²⁹And Moses said to them, “If the people of Gad and the people of Reuben, every man who is armed to battle before the Lord, will pass with you over the Jordan and the land shall be subdued before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession. ³⁰However, if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan.” ³¹And the people of Gad and the people of Reuben answered, “What the Lord has said to your servants, we will do. ³²We will pass over armed before the Lord into the land of Canaan, and the possession of our inheritance shall remain with us beyond the Jordan.”

³³And ^(AC)Moses gave to them, to the people of Gad and to the people of Reuben and to the half-tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land and its cities with their territories, the cities of the land throughout the country. ³⁴And the people of Gad built ^(AD)Dibon, ^(AE)Ataroth, ^(AF)Aroer, ³⁵Atroth-shophan, ^(AG)Jazer, Jogbehah, ³⁶^(AH)Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, ^(AI)fortified cities, and folds for sheep. ³⁷And the people of Reuben built ^(AJ)Heshbon, ^(AK)Elealeh, Kiriathaim, ³⁸^(AL)Nebo, and ^(AM)Baal-meon (^(AN)their names were changed), and ^(AO)Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. ³⁹And the sons of ^(AP)Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead and captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who were in it. ⁴⁰And Moses ^(AQ)gave Gilead to Machir the son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. ⁴¹And ^(AR)Jair the son of Manasseh went and captured their villages, and called them Havvoth-jair.^[a] ⁴²And Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah, after his own name.

Recounting Israel's Journey

33 These are the stages of the people of Israel, when they went out of the land of Egypt by their companies under the leadership of Moses and Aaron. ²Moses wrote down their starting places, ^(AS)stage by stage, by command of the Lord, and these are their stages according to their starting places. ³They ^(AT)set out from Rameses in ^(AU)the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month. On the day after the Passover, the people of Israel went out ^(AV)triumphantly in the sight of all the Egyptians, ⁴while the Egyptians were burying all their firstborn, ^(AW)whom the Lord had struck down among them. ^(AX)On their gods also the Lord executed judgments.

⁵So the people of Israel set out from Rameses and camped at ^(AY)Succoth. ⁶And they set out from Succoth and camped at ^(AZ)Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness. ⁷And they set out from Etham and turned back to ^(BA)Pi-hahiroth, which is east of Baal-zephon, and they camped before Migdol. ⁸And they set out from before Hahiroth^[b] and ^(BB)passed through the midst of the sea into the wilderness, and they ^(BC)went a three days' journey in the wilderness of Etham and camped at Marah. ⁹And they set out from Marah and came to ^(BD)Elim; at Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. ¹⁰And they set out from Elim and camped by the Red Sea. ¹¹And they set out from the Red Sea and camped in ^(BE)the wilderness of Sin. ¹²And they set out from the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dophkah. ¹³And they set out from Dophkah and camped at Alush. ¹⁴And they set out from Alush and camped at ^(BF)Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. ¹⁵And they set out from Rephidim and camped in the ^(BG)wilderness of Sinai. ¹⁶And they set out from the wilderness of Sinai and camped at ^(BH)Kibroth-hattaavah. ¹⁷And they set out from Kibroth-hattaavah and camped at ^(BI)Hazeroth. ¹⁸And they ^(BJ)set out from Hazeroth and camped at Rithmah. ¹⁹And they set out from Rithmah and camped at Rimmon-perez. ²⁰And they set out from Rimmon-perez and camped at Libnah. ²¹And they set out from Libnah and camped at Rissah. ²²And they set out from Rissah and camped at Kehelathah. ²³And they set out from Kehelathah and camped at Mount Shepher. ²⁴And they set out from Mount Shepher and camped at Haradah. ²⁵And they set out from Haradah and camped at Makheloth. ²⁶And they set out from Makheloth and camped at Tahath. ²⁷And they set out from Tahath and camped at Terah. ²⁸And they set out from Terah and camped at Mithkah. ²⁹And they set out from Mithkah and camped at Hashmonah. ³⁰And they set out from Hashmonah and camped at Moseroth. ³¹And they set out from Moseroth and camped at ^(BK)Bene-jaakan. ³²And they set out from Bene-jaakan and camped at ^(BL)Hor-haggidgad. ³³And they set out from Hor-haggidgad and camped at ^(BM)Jotbathah. ³⁴And they set out from Jotbathah and camped at Abronah. ³⁵And they set out from Abronah and camped at ^(BN)Ezion-geber. ³⁶And they set out from Ezion-geber and camped in the ^(BO)wilderness of Zin (that is, Kadesh). ³⁷And they set out from ^(BP)Kadesh and camped at ^(BQ)Mount Hor, on the edge of the land of Edom.

³⁸And Aaron the priest went up ^(BR)Mount Hor at the command of the Lord and died there, in the fortieth year after the people of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, on the first day of the fifth month. ³⁹And Aaron was ^(BS)123 years old when he died on Mount Hor.

The Transjordan Tribes

32 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks,^(A) saw that the lands of Jazer^(B) and Gilead^(C) were suitable for livestock.^(D) ²So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community,^(E) and said, ³“Ataroth,^(F) Dibon,^(G) Jazer,^(H) Nimrah,^(I) Heshbon,^(J) Elealeh,^(K) Sebam,^(L) Nebo^(M) and Beon^(N)— ⁴the land the Lord subdued^(O) before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock,^(P) and your servants have livestock. ⁵If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.^(Q)”

⁶Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your fellow Israelites go to war while you sit here? ⁷Why do you discourage the Israelites from crossing over into the land the Lord has given them?^(R) ⁸This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.^(S) ⁹After they went up to the Valley of Eshkol^(T) and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them. ¹⁰The Lord’s anger was aroused^(U) that day and he swore this oath:^(V) ¹¹‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more^(W) when they came up out of Egypt^(X) will see the land I promised on oath^(Y) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob^(Z)— ¹²not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’^(AA) ¹³The Lord’s anger burned against Israel^(AB) and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.^(AC)

¹⁴“And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the Lord even more angry with Israel.^(AD) ¹⁵If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the wilderness, and you will be the cause of their destruction.^(AE)”

¹⁶Then they came up to him and said, “We would like to build pens^(AF) here for our livestock^(AG) and cities for our women and children. ¹⁷But we will arm ourselves for battle^[a] and go ahead of the Israelites^(AH) until we have brought them to their place.^(AI) Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁸We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has received their inheritance.^(AJ) ¹⁹We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance^(AK) has come to us on the east side of the Jordan.”^(AL)

²⁰Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the Lord for battle^(AM) ²¹and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enemies out before him^(AN)— ²²then when the land is subdued before the Lord, you may return^(AO) and be free from your obligation to the Lord and to Israel. And this land will be your possession^(AP) before the Lord.^(AQ)

²³“But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.^(AR) ²⁴Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks,^(AS) but do what you have promised.^(AT)”

²⁵The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, “We your servants will do as our lord commands.^(AU) ²⁶Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.^(AV) ²⁷But your servants, every man who is armed for battle, will cross over to fight^(AW) before the Lord, just as our lord says.”

²⁸Then Moses gave orders about them^(AX) to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun^(AY) and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.^(AZ) ²⁹He said to them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you,^(BA) you must give them the land of Gilead as their possession.^(BB) ³⁰But if they do not cross over^(BC) with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan.^(BD)”

³¹The Gadites and Reubenites answered, “Your servants will do what the Lord has said.^(BE) ³²We will cross over before the Lord into Canaan armed,^(BF) but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan.^(BG)”

³³Then Moses gave to the Gadites,^(BH) the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh^(BI) son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites^(BJ) and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan^(BK)—the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.^(BL)

³⁴The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,^(BM) ³⁵Atroth Shophan, Jazer,^(BN) Jogbehah,^(BO) ³⁶Beth Nimrah^(BP) and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.^(BQ) ³⁷And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon,^(BR) Elealeh^(BS) and Kiriathaim,^(BT) ³⁸as well as Nebo^(BU) and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah.^(BV) They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.

³⁹The descendants of Makir^(BW) son of Manasseh went to Gilead,^(BX) captured it and drove out the Amorites^(BY) who were there. ⁴⁰So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites,^(BZ) the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. ⁴¹Jair,^(CA) a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.^[b]^(CB) ⁴²And Nobah captured Kenath^(CC) and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah^(CD) after himself.^(CE)

Stages in Israel’s Journey

33 Here are the stages in the journey^(CF) of the Israelites when they came out of Egypt^(CG) by divisions under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.^(CH) ²At the Lord’s command Moses recorded^(CI) the stages in their journey^(CJ). This is their journey by stages:

³The Israelites set out^(CK) from Rameses^(CL) on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover.^(CM) They marched out defiantly^(CN) in full view of all the Egyptians, ⁴who were burying all their firstborn,^(CO) whom the Lord had struck down among them; for the Lord had brought judgment^(CP) on their gods.^(CQ)

⁵The Israelites left Rameses and camped at Sukkoth.^(CR)

⁶They left Sukkoth and camped at Etham, on the edge of the desert.^(CS)

⁷They left Etham, turned back to Pi Hahiroth, to the east of Baal Zephon,^(CT) and camped near Migdol.^(CU)

⁸They left Pi Hahiroth^[c]^(CV) and passed through the sea^(CW) into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah.^(CX)

⁹They left Marah and went to Elim, where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped^(CY) there.

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

³¹^(A)And he ^(B)went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And ^(C)he was teaching them ^(D)on the Sabbath, ³²and ^(E)they were astonished at his teaching, ^(F)for his word possessed authority. ³³And ^(G)in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, ³⁴“Ha!^[a] ^(H)What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? ^(I)I know who you are—^(J)the Holy One of God.” ³⁵But Jesus ^(K)rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. ³⁶And ^(L)they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? ^(M)For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” ³⁷And ^(N)reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

Jesus Heals Many

³⁸^(O)And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Now ^(P)Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf. ³⁹And he stood over her and ^(Q)rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

⁴⁰Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and ^(R)he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them. ⁴¹^(S)And demons also came out of many, ^(T)crying, “You are ^(U)the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and ^(V)would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was ^(W)the Christ.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

⁴²^(X)And when it was day, he departed and went ^(Y)into a desolate place. And ^(Z)the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, ⁴³but he said to them, ^(AA)“I must ^(AB)preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.” ⁴⁴And he was preaching ^(AC)in the synagogues of Judea.^[b]

Jesus Calls the First Disciples

5 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by ^(AD)the lake of Gennesaret, ²^(AE)and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were ^(AF)washing their nets. ³Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And ^(AG)he sat down and taught the people from the boat. ⁴And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, ^(AH)“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” ⁵And Simon answered, “Master, ^(AI)we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” ⁶And when they had done this, ^(AJ)they enclosed a large number of fish, and ^(AK)their nets were breaking. ⁷They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. ^(AL)And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. ⁸But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, ^(AM)“Depart from me, for ^(AN)I am a sinful man, O Lord.” ⁹For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, ¹⁰and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”^[c] ¹¹And when they had brought their boats to land, ^(AO)they left everything and followed him.

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit^(A)

³¹Then he went down to Capernaum,^(B) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. ³²They were amazed at his teaching,^(C) because his words had authority.^(D)

³³In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, ³⁴“Go away! What do you want with us,^(E) Jesus of Nazareth?^(F) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are^(G)—the Holy One of God!”^(H)

³⁵“Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.^(I) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

³⁶All the people were amazed^(J) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority^(K) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” ³⁷And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.^(L)

Jesus Heals Many^(M)^(N)

³⁸Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. ³⁹So he bent over her and rebuked^(O) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.

⁴⁰At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,^(P) he healed them.^(Q) ⁴¹Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”^(R) But he rebuked^(S) them and would not allow them to speak,^(T) because they knew he was the Messiah.

⁴²At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. ⁴³But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God^(U) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” ⁴⁴And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.^(V)

Jesus Calls His First Disciples^(W)

5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,^[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.^(X) ²He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. ³He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.^(Y)

⁴When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”^(Z)

⁵Simon answered, “Master,^(AA) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.^(AB) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

⁶When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.^(AC) ⁷So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

⁸When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”^(AD) ⁹For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, ¹⁰and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

64 Hear my voice, O God, in my ^(A)complaint;
    preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
²Hide me from ^(B)the secret plots of the wicked,
    from the throng of evildoers,
³who ^(C)whet their tongues like swords,
    who ^(D)aim bitter words like arrows,
⁴shooting from ^(E)ambush at the blameless,
    shooting at him suddenly and ^(F)without fear.
⁵They ^(G)hold fast to their evil purpose;
    they talk of ^(H)laying snares secretly,
thinking, ^(I)“Who can see them?”
⁶    They search out injustice,
saying, “We have accomplished a diligent search.”
    For ^(J)the inward mind and heart of a man are deep.

⁷^(K)But God shoots his arrow at them;
    they are wounded suddenly.
⁸They are brought to ruin, with their own ^(L)tongues turned against them;
    all who ^(M)see them will ^(N)wag their heads.

    and ponder what he has done.

¹Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint;^(A)
protect my life from the threat of the enemy.^(B)

²Hide me from the conspiracy^(C) of the wicked,^(D)
    from the plots of evildoers.
³They sharpen their tongues like swords^(E)
    and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.^(F)
⁴They shoot from ambush at the innocent;^(G)
    they shoot suddenly, without fear.^(H)

⁵They encourage each other in evil plans,
    they talk about hiding their snares;^(I)
    they say, “Who will see it^[b]?”^(J)
⁶They plot injustice and say,
    “We have devised a perfect plan!”
    Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

⁷But God will shoot them with his arrows;
    they will suddenly be struck down.

    and bring them to ruin;
    all who see them will shake their heads^(L) in scorn.^(M)
⁹All people will fear;^(N)
    they will proclaim the works of God
