⁵ “And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to ^(A)stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners ^(B)so that they ^[a]will be seen by people. ^(C)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ⁶ But as for you, when you pray, ^(D)go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and ^(E)your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

⁷ “And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their ^(F)many words. ⁸ So do not be like them; for ^(G)your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

The Lord’s Prayer

⁹ “^(H)Pray, then, in this way:

^14 (O)For if you forgive other people for their ^[h]offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ¹⁵ But ^(P)if you do not forgive other people, then your Father will not forgive your ^[i]offenses.

Fasting; The True Treasure; Wealth

¹⁶ “Now ^(Q)whenever you fast, do not make a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they ^[j]distort their faces so that they will be noticed by people when they are fasting. ^(R)Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. ¹⁷ But as for you, when you fast, ^[k](S)anoint your head and wash your face, ¹⁸ so that your fasting will not be noticed by people but by your Father who is in secret; and your ^(T)Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

¹⁹ “^(U)Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. ²⁰ But store up for yourselves ^(V)treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; ²¹ for ^(W)where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

²² “^(X)The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is ^[l]clear, your whole body will be full of light. ²³ But if ^(Y)your eye is ^[m]bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

²⁴ “^(Z)No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and ^[n](AA)wealth.

The Cure for Anxiety

²⁵ “^(AB)For this reason I say to you, ^[o]do not be ^(AC)worried about your ^[p]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is life not more than food, and the body more than clothing? ^26 (AD)Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather crops into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more important than they? ²⁷ And which of you by ^(AE)worrying can ^(AF)add a single ^[q]day to his ^[r]life’s span? ²⁸ And why are you ^(AG)worried about clothing? Notice how the lilies of the field grow; they do not labor nor do they spin thread for cloth, ²⁹ yet I say to you that not even ^(AH)Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. ³⁰ But if God so clothes the ^(AI)grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? ^(AJ)You of little faith! ³¹ Do not ^(AK)worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ ³² For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for ^(AL)your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. ³³ But ^[s]seek first ^[t]His kingdom and His righteousness, and ^(AM)all these things will be ^[u]provided to you.

³⁴ “So do not ^(AN)worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will ^[v]worry about itself. ^[w]Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Judging Others

7 “^(AO)Do not ^[x]judge, so that you will not be judged. ² For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and ^[y](AP)by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. ³ Why do you ^(AQ)look at the ^[z]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? ^4 (AR)Or how ^[aa]can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the ^[ab]speck out of your eye,’ and look, the log is in your own eye? ⁵ You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the ^[ac]speck out of your brother’s eye!

⁶ “^(AS)Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

³⁷ “^(A)Do not ^[a]judge, and you will not be judged; and do not ^[b]condemn, and you will not be condemned; ^[c](B)pardon, and you will be pardoned. ³⁸ Give, and it will be given to you. They will ^[d]pour ^(C)into your lap a ^(D)good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

³⁹ Now He also spoke a parable to them: “^(E)A person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? ^40 (F)A ^[e]student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. ⁴¹ Why do you look at the ^[f]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? ⁴² How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the ^[g]speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the ^[h]speck that is in your brother’s eye.

Prayer and the Golden Rule

⁷ “^[a](A)Ask, and ^(B)it will be given to you; ^[b]seek, and you will find; ^[c]knock, and it will be opened to you. ⁸ For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. ⁹ Or what person is there among you ^[d]who, when his son asks for a loaf of bread, ^[e]will give him a stone? ¹⁰ Or ^[f]if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? ¹¹ So if you, despite being ^[g]evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, ^(C)how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!

¹² “In everything, ^(D)therefore, ^[h]treat people the same way you want ^[i]them to treat you, for ^(E)this is the Law and the Prophets.

The Narrow and Wide Gates

¹³ “^(F)Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. ¹⁴ For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

A Tree and Its Fruit

¹⁵ “Beware of the ^(G)false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ^(H)ravenous wolves. ¹⁶ You will ^[j](I)know them by their fruits. ^[k]Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? ¹⁷ So ^(J)every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. ^19 (K)Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. ²⁰ So then, you will ^[l]know them ^(L)by their fruits.

^43 (A)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, ^[a]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. ^44 (B)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. ^45 (C)The good person out of the good ^[b]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; ^(D)for his mouth speaks from ^[c]that which fills his heart.

²¹ “^(A)Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. ^22 (B)Many will say to Me on ^(C)that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many ^[a]miracles?’ ²³ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; ^(D)leave Me, you who practice lawlessness.’

The Two Foundations

²⁴ “Therefore, ^(E)everyone who hears these words of Mine, and ^[b]acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. ²⁵ And the rain fell and the ^[c]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. ²⁶ And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not ^[d]act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ And the rain fell and the ^[e]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.”

^28 [f](F)When Jesus had finished these words, ^(G)the crowds were amazed at His teaching; ²⁹ for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

The Parable of the Builders

⁴⁶ “Now ^(A)why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? ^47 (B)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and ^[a]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: ⁴⁸ he is like a man building a house, who ^[b]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. ⁴⁹ But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
