²⁸ But what think you? A certain man had two sons; and coming to the first, he said: Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

²⁹ And he answering, said: I will not. But afterwards, being moved with repentance, he went.

³⁰ And coming to the other, he said in like manner. And he answering, said: I go, Sir; and he went not.

³¹ Which of the two did the father's will? They say to him: The first. Jesus saith to them: Amen I say to you, that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of God before you.

³² For John came to you in the way of justice, and you did not believe him. But the publicans and the harlots believed him: but you, seeing it, did not even afterwards repent, that you might believe him.

12 And he began to speak to them in parables: A certain man planted a vineyard and made a hedge about it, and dug a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it to husbandmen; and went into a far country.

² And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant to receive of the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.

³ Who having laid hands on him, beat him, and sent him away empty.

⁴ And again he sent to them another servant; and him they wounded in the head, and used him reproachfully.

⁵ And again he sent another, and him they killed: and many others, of whom some they beat, and others they killed.

⁶ Therefore having yet one son, most dear to him; he also sent him unto them last of all, saying: They will reverence my son.

⁷ But the husbandmen said one to another: This is the heir; come let us kill him; and the inheritance shall be ours.

⁸ And laying hold on him, they killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.

⁹ What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those husbandmen; and will give the vineyard to others.

¹⁰ And have you not read this scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner:

¹¹ By the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes.

¹² And they sought to lay hands on him, but they feared the people. For they knew that he spoke this parable to them. And leaving him, they went their way.

³³ Hear ye another parable. There was a man an householder, who planted a vineyard, and made a hedge round about it, and dug in it a press, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen; and went into a strange country.

³⁴ And when the time of the fruits drew nigh, he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits thereof.

³⁵ And the husbandmen laying hands on his servants, beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

³⁶ Again he sent other servants more than the former; and they did to them in like manner.

³⁷ And last of all he sent to them his son, saying: They will reverence my son.

³⁸ But the husbandmen seeing the son, said among themselves: This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and we shall have his inheritance.

³⁹ And taking him, they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him.

⁴⁰ When therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come, what will he do to those husbandmen?

⁴¹ They say to him: He will bring those evil men to an evil end; and will let out his vineyard to other husbandmen, that shall render him the fruit in due season.

⁴² Jesus saith to them: Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? By the Lord this has been done; and it is wonderful in our eyes.

⁴³ Therefore I say to you, that the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof.

⁴⁴ And whosoever shall fall on this stone, shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.

⁴⁵ And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they knew that he spoke of them.

⁴⁶ And seeking to lay hands on him, they feared the multitudes: because they held him as a prophet.

⁹ And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time.

¹⁰ And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty.

¹¹ And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty.

¹² And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

¹³ Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.

¹⁴ Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

¹⁵ So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

¹⁶ He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.

¹⁷ But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

¹⁸ Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

¹⁹ And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.

22 And Jesus answering, spoke again in parables to them, saying:

² The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king, who made a marriage for his son.

³ And he sent his servants, to call them that were invited to the marriage; and they would not come.

⁴ Again he sent other servants, saying: Tell them that were invited, Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my calves and fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come ye to the marriage.

⁵ But they neglected, and went their own ways, one to his farm, and another to his merchandise.

⁶ And the rest laid hands on his servants, and having treated them contumeliously, put them to death.

⁷ But when the king had heard of it, he was angry, and sending his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and burnt their city.

⁸ Then he saith to his servants: The marriage indeed is ready; but they that were invited were not worthy.

⁹ Go ye therefore into the highways; and as many as you shall find, call to the marriage.

¹⁰ And his servants going forth into the ways, gathered together all that they found, both bad and good: and the marriage was filled with guests.

¹¹ And the king went in to see the guests: and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment.

¹² And he saith to him: Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? But he was silent.

¹³ Then the king said to the waiters: Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹⁴ For many are called, but few are chosen.

¹³ And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians; that they should catch him in his words.

¹⁴ Who coming, say to him: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and carest not for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar; or shall we not give it?

¹⁵ Who knowing their wiliness, saith to them: Why tempt you me? bring me a penny that I may see it.

¹⁶ And they brought it him. And he saith to them: Whose is this image and inscription? They say to him, Caesar's.

¹⁷ And Jesus answering, said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees going, consulted among themselves how to insnare him in his speech.

¹⁶ And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying: Master, we know that thou art a true speaker, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou dost not regard the person of men.

¹⁷ Tell us therefore what dost thou think, is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

¹⁸ But Jesus knowing their wickedness, said: Why do you tempt me, ye hypocrites?

¹⁹ Shew me the coin of the tribute. And they offered him a penny.

²⁰ And Jesus saith to them: Whose image and inscription is this?

²¹ They say to him: Caesar's. Then he saith to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and to God, the things that are God's.

²² And hearing this they wondered, and leaving him, went their ways.

²⁰ And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.

²¹ And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth.

²² Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?

²³ But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me?

²⁴ shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar's.

²⁵ And he said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's: and to God the things that are God's.

²⁶ And they could not reprehend his word before the people: and wondering at his answer, they held their peace.

¹⁸ And there came to him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying:

¹⁹ Master, Moses wrote unto us, that if any man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.

²⁰ Now there were seven brethren; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no issue.

²¹ And the second took her, and died: and neither did he leave any issue. And the third in like manner.

²² And the seven all took her in like manner; and did not leave issue. Last of all the woman also died.

²³ In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise again, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.

²⁴ And Jesus answering, saith to them: Do ye not therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, nor the power of God?

²⁵ For when they shall rise again from the dead, they shall neither marry, nor be married, but are as the angels in heaven.

²⁶ And as concerning the dead that they rise again, have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke to him, saying: I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

²⁷ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You therefore do greatly err.
