²⁵ But Jesus called them to him and said, ^(A)“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles ^(B)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ^26 (C)It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,^{[a] 27} and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,^{[b] 28} even as the Son of Man came not to be served but ^(D)to serve, and ^(E)to give his life as a ransom for ^(F)many.”

^42 (A)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles ^(B)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ⁴³ But ^(C)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,^{[a] 44} and whoever would be first among you must be ^(D)slave^[b] of all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man came not to be served but ^(E)to serve, and ^(F)to give his life as a ransom for ^(G)many.”

^25 (A)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles ^(B)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. ^26 (C)But not so with you. Rather, let ^(D)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. ²⁷ For who is the greater, ^(E)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But ^(F)I am among you as the one who serves.

^24 (A)“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and ^(B)money.^[a]

Shepherd the Flock of God

5 So I exhort the elders among you, ^(A)as a fellow elder and ^(B)a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: ^2 (C)shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,^{[a] (D)}not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;^{[b] (E)}not for shameful gain, but eagerly; ³ not ^(F)domineering over those in your charge, but ^(G)being examples to the flock.

⁹ I have written something to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first, does not acknowledge our authority. ¹⁰ So if I come, I will bring up what he is doing, talking wicked nonsense against us. And not content with that, he refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church.

¹¹ Beloved, ^(A)do not imitate evil but imitate good. ^(B)Whoever does good is from God; ^(C)whoever does evil has not seen God.

^4 (A)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,^[a] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. ^5 (B)They do all their deeds ^(C)to be seen by others. For they make ^(D)their phylacteries broad and ^(E)their fringes long, ⁶ and they ^(F)love the place of honor at feasts and ^(G)the best seats in the synagogues ⁷ and ^(H)greetings in ^(I)the marketplaces and being called ^(J)rabbi^[b] by others. ^8 (K)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are ^(L)all brothers.^{[c] 9 (M)}And call no man your father on earth, for ^(N)you have one Father, who is in heaven. ¹⁰ Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, ^(O)the Christ. ^11 (P)The greatest among you shall be your servant. ^12 (Q)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
